starting problem on a KA24DE '95se

About a week ago my car started becoming hard to start. I took it to O'Reillys and they tested the battery and said it was bad. So I took it to Autozone where I got the battery from originally and they also said it was bad. Got it prorated so ended up getting another Duralast gold. Car seemed better at first for the first 3 starts but still didn't sound quite right. The next day when it was cold it had a harder time starting so took it back and had the alternator tested. They said battery and alternator were reading ok. They also tried a test for the starter. He thought it was putting out ok but wasn't sure because it doesn't really say if its bad or not. Put out something like 130 mA. Then today it would hardly start and don't think its going to start again. This same thing happened back in 9/2003. I was told the battery was bad. So I got a new one. It started up once or twice then it wouldn't start again and had to replace the starter. I can't believe the something similar is happening again where the battery goes bad at the same time something else fails. Thats hard to believe. O'Reiilys said they could give a definitive test of the starter if I brought it in but it looks very hard to get to to take it out. Though, he said it shouldn't be that difficult. The starter thats in there is a Bosch.

have you taken one out of an S14? It looks very hard to get to. Someone else just replied on another form saying it was difficult.

its only 2 bolts and like codunc said it only takes 5 minutes i just replaced mine when i replaced my tranny.

Would you possible have a pic of the starter on the car? Aren't there some harness you have to take off?

its just 2 wires you have to unhook. I have a SR but i believe its basically in the same spot. Under the intake manifold where the tranny mounts to the block your gonna see it, its alittle bigger than a can of soda. Get under the passanger side of the car and look up and the 2 bolts in front of it on the bellhousing will remove it, heres a link of a pic for you. Oh and disconnect your battery or its gonna zap the shit out of you

I can only find one bolt. The other one might be on the other side towards the center of the car which looks impossible to get to. So maybe its quite different on an SR than the KA. One of the bolts looks like it supposed to be unscrewed from the other side of the transmission housing. Doesnt that go through a gasket.

Just wondering does your car have a loud humming noise when you start the car. Mine started making that noise until the day my starter finally died...when I replaced it the sound was no longer there.

just sounds hard to start. Thought just tried to start it the 1st time today and it started almost normally. The starter looks hard to take out on the KA. I still haven't figured it out. You can't even get to the other side of the starter from the passenger side to loosen the bolt which I assume there is one on that side.

If you're afraid to try and take your starter off, either ask a friend for help, or take it to a shop.

taking the starter off is the easiest job on a car that requires the turning of nuts and bolts.

Order of things by difficulty you might have to do to a car to maintain it, lol.
(not by order of what you should be doing, by difficulty)

putting gas in car
putting air in tires
checking and filling fluids
changing lights and bulbs
changing blown fuses
oil change
radiator fluid change
cap and rotor
spark plugs
fixing broken belts
starter
clutch slave cylinder
brake job
master cylinders
valve cover gasket
clutch fan

if you own a 240 and can't do this, GTFO
you shouldn't own a 240.
Its one of the easiest things man.
just do it and feel good when you finish the job :)

Ok it might be easy but I just don'twant to undo the wrong bolts. I hate not having a lift. Someone else said on another form that theyve taken theirs out 3 times and it was a pain to get to on the S14 with KA. Today it starts right up the first time but yesterday it sounded like it wasn't going to till after the 3rd time. I checked the voltage drop and it dropped to 11.44 just before it started last night which is just below the 11.5V the manual said it needed to stay above. This indicates a starter issue or problem with the cables or wiring. But everything looks ok. I wonder if it could be the ignition. I replaced the starter in 9/03 with the battery. Coincidentally, they were both bad then. I couldn't imagine a starter going out at the same time with the battery again in only 5 and a half yrs. Wierd if this is the case.

The starter is easy.

Whatever is attached to it needs to come off of it.
there is no, taking the wrong wire off.
They all come off to get it out.
Its really easy.
should only take you 10 minutes as its your first time.

But if you have the money to spare and dont trust your skills as a man, then go pay a bill to have someone else do it.

If you found 1 that holds the starter on then look at the bolt either above or below that one and your done.

Ok, so loosening this bolt will not cause you to have to replace the gasket?? I've heard sometimes when you take the pressure off of a seal or gasket its shot and doesn't seal back properly. The bolt I see is at the top left of the starter I think.

that gasket is a huge metal gasket that is for the bellhousing to seal to the block but removing a starter isnt gonna hurt nothing cause theres no fluids that will leak out of there anyway. Pretty much it just keeps shit out of there so nothing gets on your clutch and flywheel, after you do it your gonna laugh at how retarded easy that was haha. Good luck man youll be fine

I'd start with checking cranking voltage at the S terminal at the starter first during cranking when it acts up.

For starter removal
-Disconnect Battery
-Remove 12mm head nut holding 6 gauge wire to starter
-Remove 8mm head nut holding starter solenoid wire
-Remove upper starter bolt from above 14mm.
-Remove lower starter bolt (can do it above if manual or below if auto) 14mm

My mechanic checked it and said he thinks the starting issue is the ignition switch. Is this a common problem on these cars? Whats a good ignition switch to get. He priced it at about $165 I think.

OEM, thats the parts to get thats quality. Things wear out. Get OE shit and problems won't happen.
