Anyone on here heard of Soda Blasting?

What is Soda Blasting?
Soda Blasting is a Non-Abrasive paint stripping procedure using non-toxic sodium bicarbonate. Unlike sandblasting, baking soda blasting removes paint, dirt, grease, and oil from the surface being blasted, without damage to the surface, leaving it clean and smooth.

Advantages
Soda Blasting is Non-Abrasive and does not affect metal, glass, or chrome. It does not produce heat, which prevents warping. Treated surfaces are left undamaged and smooth. Leaving little to no prep work for new paint to be applied, saving time and money. Soda is also a rust inhibitor.

Rust Removal
With new process it can also remove heavy rust without damaging, heating, or warping the surface. It is a Non-Corrosive way to remove heavy rust damage while leaving the panel intact.

Part cleaning and care
Baking soda blasting can also be used for cleaning and removing grease, paint, and oil on automotive parts. The parts can be cleaned without altering the part's specifications. For EXAMPLE, a piston can be cleaned without changing its' tolerances, leaving it in clean perfect working order.
(i personally have blasted pistons on a RC silvia i have. They got gunk all over them, and looked all new and pretty. I installed them and it runs same as before.)

Surface prep at its best!!
Non-Abrasive
Non-Corrosive
No Heat
No Warping
No Damaged area
Enviromentally friendly
requires you to do less work to get part cleaned.

Interest in getting parts Soda Blasting???

I am not currently advertising this, but could pending serious interst. In which case i would speak to zilvia.net mods and admins about it. :hsdance:

I have talked to the owner of shop about getting part time job there. I have never worked for anyone at a shop before, and so he is a little timid. I have rented shop space, and worked on my own stuff though. He lets me come do my own work on car when i want during business hours, and i help him with projects at shop, but dont have official job. I usually buy lunch and bring coffee if i am going to be there all day, but i actually would like a job there. There is ALOT i dont know about fab work, and would like to learn CORRECTLY. I also would like to practice more tig welding, and do custom restorations and stuff. He told me that he knows business would pick up by hiring me because he could take on more projects, but i would like to bring TONS more business. To eventually turn into full time. Fab stuff is VERY fun to me, i dont think of it as work at all. And i think bringing SODA BLASTING to the zilvia community at a decent price would be benificial. Regardless of whether i get a job at this place i will take your part to them and get it "refreshened" for ya. If i can get hired, i will speak to MODS and ADMINS about becoming a zilvia advertiser, this may make it more affordable for you (zilvia members) to get things cleaned.

They have ability to do entire cars, spare parts, glass, LOTS of stuff. I have had them soda blast wheels, trunks, subframes, hoods, fenders, calipers, pretty much you name it. I plan to do my entire car this summer...It looks alot like sand or bead blasting, however its not abrasive. I soda blasted brake calipers with the seals still in them, and it didnt hurt boot at all!

Let me know what you guys think....

Yup, good old great salt lake. However LOTS of places that do it here charge outragious prices. This place is VERY affordable. I will say this. It was cheaper for me to soda blast AND powdercoat my rear subframe, crossmember, z32 uprights, 2 r200 diffs, z32 f+r calipers and soda blast my ls1 block than it was to just have same stuff soda blasted elsewhere. BTW.. aluminum blocks look SOOO BADASS when there is no dirt in the those hard to reach places. Maybe i could get someone to host a pic for me..

out of curiosity, how much is like those 1 pound things of salt outside utah? How bout outside USA? Shit is rediculiously cheap here.

This sounds amazing, first time i heard of it. I know baking soda is good for cleaning and unclugging pipes lol... and many other uses but this.. kinda cool. What does the machine and process look like. I'd invest in something like this.

soda blasting is very popular with the datsun guys i know of. it doesnt warp panels like sandblasting and is also water soluble so it dissolves after a wash leaving no residue unlike sand which will ALWAYS be in little crevices after blasting. too bad your all the way in utah and im broke haha. i got a datsun that needs some attention

There was an episode of Trucks where they got their C-10 soda blasted. They went right over the trim pieces with no damage done. It looked pretty good.

Just takes a little longer to remove the rust. You can see it in the last segment when they are blasting the big green "thing". It strips the paint right off, then they go back over the rust and it removes the raw oxidized material. The steel left underneath is no longer brown, but will remain a darker shade then the metal around it.

ThatGuy, i assumed you moved thread, sorry. I took a guess on where to put it.
I went to shop today, and one of the guys that works there is selling his datsun 240z. It is in AMAZING shape. I wanted it BAD! Ok back to topic, the soda blasting materials arent that expensive to buy and do at home, it just creates a FUCKIN HUGE mess. That shit gets EVERYWHERE! I chilled and had a few beers with a guy while he did his truck, It had paint, and shitty bondo work from 5+years ago.. He could have filled a 5 gallon bucket a few times with all the shit that just fell off and went strait down. And then, there was shit that just blew everywhere, all over shop. O and ya you can go right over pannels, headlights, it just comes off.. Takes a while to do rust spots, the guy said when doing a customers car, they get permission from customer to sandblast major rust spots out because its alot cheaper than sitting and spraying baking soda at it for awhile.

On a side note, so you have a idea on pricing, To soda blast and powdercoat my rear subframe, crossmember, z32 uprights, 2 r200 diffs, z32 f+r calipers and soda blast my ls1 block it was $500. On the block i took everything off and taped intake and exhaust and stuff off prior, but Still Thats kinda cheap to blast and powdercoat all that.

i have a sodablaster my self.. it definitely consumes a lot of baking soda since it is so easy on the metals.. and at ~$40-60 per 50lbs it gets to be pretty expensive, i used about 50lbs on 1 s13 door..
i did how ever figure out, with a box big enough, refrigerator or a front facia box if you do the blasting in there you can re-use your soda if you re-strain it..
but man is this crap messy, it really does get everywhere, i do it out side to keep down on mess but you need to cover every inch of skin or it will be all over you..

Hm, if I had the money and a personal garage (garage is shared with my father), I'd totally purchase one. :D

Hell, I could probably do some jobs with it and have it pay for itself!

I plan on picking one up for my S13, stripping it down for the rebuild and such.

I can think of how much I would use it for various projects, totally worth it.
