Over the past 30 years:

Democrats have blocked the development of new sources of petroleum.
Democrats have blocked drilling in ANWR.
Democrats have blocked drilling off the coast of Florida.
Democrats have blocked drilling off of the east coast.

So it really wasn't so surprising when the democrats opened the 111th Congress by introducing a bill to permanently prohibit drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).

i'm all for cheaper gas and whatnot. but why not just make more fuel efficient cars. 30mpg hybrids? what a joke. europe has had high MPG cars for YEARS and they arnt hybrids.

why does anyone think drilling in florida is good... everyone that's been to texas from florida and see how oil rigs dicked the beach doesn't want it.. florida gets like 3x the hurricanes that the gulf coast does. florida is a long thin stick of land so even if a hurricane doesn't hit where the rig is.. says it hits 200 miles north... it will still cut off the supply from that rig as it will have to pass through that area... florida has way to many hippies, reef lovers, manatees, endangered everything to drill... not happening.

If ANWR drilling were approved this year, the first drop of oil wouldn't come out until 2012, and the peak output would only be 780,000 barrels per day (peaking at that number in 2027).

US oil consumption TODAY is 20.8 million barrels per day, and it's estimated to be 39 million barrels per day in 2027. This means that total ANWR yield, at peak, will only be 2% of estimated domestic consumption.

I'm not anti-drilling, so long as it's done responsibly I don't have any issue with it, I'm all for exploring all available options, but pro-drilling nuts need to realize that it's more a psychological aid than anything else. The sum total of all remaining US oil reserves will not make a discernible impact on real energy prices now or ever.

It is NOT short term relief because it is not available in the short term, it will take 10 years to "turn the tap on".

If we still really need that 2% extra in 2027, if we're still primarily using oil for transportation, we've got much bigger problems.

Again, let's drill until we're blue in the face, but it's just a political "gimme". It isn't a real solution, and it'll never have any kind of material impact on pricing. Anyone who asserts otherwise is either misinformed or lying, period.

The most I paid was last summer @ $4.71/gallon for the M35x.....and that was when I was doing an average 60 mile commute M-F. Ever since I moved and prices dropped, I've saved a bit....but I'm pretty sure prices will hike back up and my recent move will be worth it. All I'm saying is the price of oil and gasoline is very manipulative and it's sad how short sighted some people can be. I really hope there is a push for alternatives despite this "low oil" we are having. Everyone should know that this price drop is here to keep people from looking at alternatives and creating a justification to invest into them.

Gas prices are cheap in the winter and expensive in the summer(more people drive). Diesel is cheap during the summer and expensive in the winter(fuel oil for heating comes from the same stock as Diesel). Gas prices will go up in the spring time.

I'm waiting for coal to gasoline refineries. The projected price per gallon is around 40 cents. We have more coal than the world has ever had oil so the supply should last quite a while. That couple with more fuel efficient cars is the future of internal combustion in my opinion.

None of that addressed the fact that the US does not have the OPTION of significantly reducing foreign oil dependence or gasoline prices by drilling domestically because there isn't enough domestic oil.

It's a political play. The GOP is (wisely) using the environmental sensibilities of the left against them to paint them as being irresponsible over what is really and truly a non-issue. For whatever reason, certain GOP constituents continue to buy this line by believing that there are significant US oil reserves that could be tapped quickly, even though this is patently untrue.

Do I think that the Dems should allow drilling? Sure I do, but I don't think it's actually going to make a material impact. Every little bit helps I suppose, but just because their resistance to it is irrational doesn't mean that the GOP can truthfully paint them as standing in the way of a real solution, as it certainly isn't a real solution. It's a bona fide bullshit issue.

EDIT: Gasoline prices will almost surely rise in the summer as mentioned, but not to $4.00+, at least not solely as a function of it being summertime. The recent plummeting has more to do with overpriced gasoline futures and the global recession than it does with seasonal pricing fluctuations. It'll rise a bit, but if it rises a lot, it'll be for other reasons. Methinks it'll stay fairly low until the global economy pulls itself out of the clusterfuck it's trapped in presently.

The next major city from where I am is a further distance than most European countries are from border to border east - west or north - south. The distance from me to Toronto for example... Is further than the distance from London to Berlin and nearly back again. But I never have to leave the country.

It's true for the most part. However, come where I live and stay for one winter living on a farm when it's -50 outside and snow depth is measured in feet, not inches. You NEED a big ass truck that's gonna use gas. A civic hybrid won't start in the morning if it's outside, let alone make it down the driveway after a blizzard.

But IME a lot of Europeans who criticize American and Canadian use of fuel etc. have never been here... They have no concept of the sheer size and distances between places here. Where I live we have a large influx of European immigrants at the moment... Every single one I've talked to is changing their tune about here and the gas prices. They know even though it's cheaper, we still pay more cause we have to. A guy I go to school with wanted to drive to Calgary, Alberta with some people. He figured on it being about a 2-3 hr. trip.

He nearly didn't believe me when I informed him it's closer to 6-7 and it would be further than if he drove across his home country of France.

His response "But it's just over in the next province!"
Mine: "But you're 200 miles from the border to the next province here, and it's another 200 to Calgary after that."

He also informed me he never put more than 200 miles on his car in a month back home. I told him people here can do that in less than a week, and still be actively trying to save gas. People from Europe it would seem just don't grasp the DISTANCES we have to deal with here.

But whatever. The price of gas, is the price of gas. I'll pay it and not let it affect my life. It's dirt cheap (kinda) now... I'm working on filling jerry cans.

My girlfriend is now seeing customers comming in (DSW Shoes) with Obama duffle bags and stuffing 10+ pairs of shoes in, and yelling OBAMA MOFUCKA as they run out of the store [Their shrink rate has gone from a 1.3% to a 7% since November]. Retail Lawsuits are going through the fucking roof now that Obama is in. And we wonder why retailers are loosing so much money?

I had a kid in a class of mine complain when gas was like 3.50 a gallon and I asked him what he drove. He drives a Honda Civic. I Laughed in his face, Called him a idiot and said come talk to me when you start driving more than 10 miles a day. (Civic ~30mpg x ~10 Gallon Tank = 300 miles to the tank which means he rarely fills up more than once a month)

Had a friend of mine say something to me the first time it took more than $100 to fill up the tank(s) in his truck. He said something along the lines of "I have a truck, I drive like a jerk, I get 12mpg, and I still don't care about gas prices - Thats why I have a job"

In all seriousness, Obama is probably going to cause a rise in gas prices. I really don't care. I need to go places my car burns gas so why would I complain about something I need to use. I average 25 miles per gallon...
I drive 20 miles to work, 25 to the gym and 5 home from the gym, 5 days a week, that is 250 miles... Weekends, it is 5 to and from the gym, with a mix of normal "weekend" driving, so let's call it 300 miles a week. 12 gallons of gas, at $4.00 would be $48.00 a week.
If I can't afford that, I shouldn't be driving, because I have failed to properly plan.
I would honestly not bitch about the increase in the price per gallon. No, I wouldn't like it when it triples, but I am not going to cry about it. I will suck it up, pay the funds and continue to go to fucking work.

You're absolutely right with your statement.

But it's also important to remember that the U.S. and Canada have directly and indirectly subsidized and developed an infrastructure that's reliant on the private automobile.

This didn't used to be the case. The United States (and I assume Canada as well) for example actually had more miles of commuter track in the early part of the 20th century than in the second half.


The system in Europe isn't perfect by any means and wouldn't work if most U.S. cities if planners tried to implement the same strategies.

The auto-centric transportation infrastructure in North America is a direct result of prosperity and consumer societies. The downside to all that comfort and luxury is that when operating costs increase, owners of POV's are going to be a lot more sensitive to the rise in prices.

Gas prices in Europe and Japan are dependent on the level of taxation.

We don't have a gas shortage worldwide. We have a gas shortage in this country because we depend on a group of outside people who, in general, hate our guts.

We have a country in tens of trillions of dollars of debt. Increased taxation will come as certain services come very close to or just plain collapse. Right now, in California, you pay $0.63/gal total tax on gasoline. Of that $0.63, $0.184 is federal tax. On diesel, the tax is $0.72/gal total, $0.244/gal federal.

They could raise those taxes quite a bit higher now that the state is bankrupt, unable to pay bills by the second quarter.

There is also the problem of the green movement. Apparently, it's our duty to the world to lead on the environmental issues. Green costs money, a LOT of money. It also costs fuel economy, as this part-ethanol gas has lower energy potential.

Have you ever been outside of the U.S? In England public transport costs more than taking my car to where I go to collage; over a hundred miles from where I live (which is considered very close). I was paying up to $8.60 per gallon to put petrol in my S14.

High interest rates = scarce credit, low interest rates = easy credit. The economy is too dynamic for a board of wisemen to know when rates are too low or too high. If we could somehow speed up the process or make cars/factories that ran on homeless people slurry* we could benefit immediately
