s13s are for children, adults drive s14s.(j/p) just get which body style you prefer. in the long run thats what matters. the s14 will be a lil more expensive tho.

Generally it's a matter of preference, imo. However, I've noticed that the you can get a vast majority of s13 parts at a fairly cheap price. And since there are more s13's out there, you can probably find parts easier; compared to the s14.

I'd still get the s14 kouki, if that's what you were looking for.

like 1st poster said...its ultimately up to you. you're the one that will be driving it/fixing it. some prefer s13, some prefer s14. for example me. i prefer s13. for me it is just more aesthetically appealing. you get what you want and can afford.

Get a beater to drive, get whichever, S13/S14, as a project.

Get a beater, usually a FWD (civic/mazda etc..), learn how to drive before getting behind a RWD car... I don't want to see another S13/S14 wrapped around a pole. Then again kids don't listen so do whatever the F$%^ you want.

S14's will be harder to find and yes they are a little more expensive. End of the day it comes down to how much you can afford.

I had an s13 for my first car. As long as you're not an idiot behind the wheel, its fine for a first car. As for which you should get, it depends on your personal preference and how much money you have. I'd recommend not spending all you money on the car since you will likely need some cash for maintenance and repairs. Personally, I would look for the cleanest, best condition 240 I could afford and not care if it was an s13 or s14.

I had a 1977 honda civic cvcc, rallied the shit out of that, then a 2002 ford focus, well that hit a tree doing 50 lol, and then i had a 1990 240sx(sold it to a freind) then i got a 1989 240sx(sold to some guy in slc) then i got my 1995 s14, i like the s14 for the comfort room, and well its just bad ass!!! i like it way more then my s13, even though zilvia has way more s13 parts for sale then s14, but its get what you want... s13 was a sweet car, but my s14 is so much more sexier!!!

01-13-2009, 09:05 AM
neither, i wish i bought a daily first then my s14 and not the other way around. i keep on wanting to go to events but i sure have no back up cars. now i hard park and i get people on my back peer pressuring me to do events at least 3 times a day.

do it right:
get a reliable daily
THEN get a s13 or s14, or whatever because u may change your mind.

Took me 6 years to get it right
S13 for the track project
S14 for the clean/weekend project
90 Corolla for daily/beater duty

Personal choice, really which do you like best?
I like both so I have one of each

S13 imo tend to be lighter and more nimble but have a lot of rattles
S14 are nicer for a daily, quieter, more solid but some say more slugish/heavier for track.

Are the Zenkis the round headlight S14?
I dont pay attention to that stuff.

Anyways, get a S14.
Here in SoCal you can pick up one of the first year S14's for the same price as a S13 coupe.
just spend your time waiting for them to show on craigslist.
you should spend about 3K on it.
Make sure the body is decent to nice, no car from some kid. Wait for a adult to sell it.

S14's handle better BTW. (or so I have heard)

LOOK PEOPLE NOT IN SOCAL. S14's ARE CHEAPER THAN S13's IN LA!!!

heres some examples from CL in LA.

1991 Nissan 240sx LE (http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/ctd/991411432.html)
same dealer,
1995 Nissan 240SX (http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/ctd/991383678.html)
the S14 is less somehow.

1989 Nissan 240sx s13 (http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/cto/990220589.html)
and the S14
1996 NISSAN 240SX (http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/ctd/990378463.html)

You are comparing shitty base model automatic s14's to s13's with mods or atleast wheels?

By wheels, I hope your not refering to sportmax or anything thats above +25.

Shitty base model S14 is what you want for a track car.
your gonna have to get rid of all that automatic shit anyways to shed weight and get the car down to bare bones.

Plus, its just fucking newer, and as a young man going on dates, the newer the car, the better.
Better condition carpet,
seats,
dash,
stock steering wheel,
suspension,
bushings,
engine,
AC might work

Seems like the S14 base is better than a S13 base with wheels and a pull me over exhaust.:2c:

I am just like you, in the fact that i owned 2 zenki's because i like them better... anyway back on subject IMO from experience i would not go and buy a 240sx for my first car. There is just too much to consider when driving these cars, like some of the others who have posted start with something simple & easy to drive then choose any 240sx for a project car. GL on your choice though

01-13-2009, 08:22 PM
it's really up to whatever chassis you like i personally love my s14 however if you are looking to buy after market parts i have to say its much easier to find parts for an s13 than an s14 on this forum.

ixfxi
01-13-2009, 09:28 PM
these are old cars for being a "first" car. i wouldnt recommend it unless you're willing and able to deal with the maintenance that these cars will need. plus its a fact that parts are not all available nowadays, so get used to things being broken unless you've got connections to either locate parts second hand or custom fabricate a reliable fix.

besides that, theres absolutely no major difference between S13 and S14. S13's are loose fun and in my opinion, more sporty. S14's are more stable and but in my opinion they feel more confining.

maintenance is key. stay away from cars that have been neglected. the last thing you want your first car to be is a money pit.

01-14-2009, 11:42 PM
JDM JOSH, why a SR20?????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????

Have you even driven a 240sx??
Sooooooooo, why do you think you need an SR?

first thing is full tune up after smog.
then your first real mod is springs and shocks or coil overs.
then rims and wheels
then a steering wheel
maybe a seat.
maybe brakes up front
kit?

after that, you might have aquired the driving skills to be able to use a SR20.
you need to spend over $150 a month for race events easy.

an SR20 does nothing but impress other high school boys and people that actually dont drive their 240's worth a shit. I love those guys, someone has to buy there tickets to Formula D events, but,
Kicking ass in a KA is WAAAYYYYYY more impressive. trust me

It is just a 240sx. It is cheap, not a collectible, not rare, its an economic car that gets good mileage, decent insurance, lots of potential, lots of aftermarket support, lots of interchangeable parts.

Come one guys, its not like this guy is trying to buy a ferrari or anything. If he gets a 240sx and keeps it nice and clean, then cool. If he destroys it, it makes my car that much more rare.

So at first I wasn't an asshole. I even perpetrated and furthered your cause.

Now I can see that you probably shouldn't be allowed to kick it with a rideable lawn mower, never mind an automobile. However, since the condom broke and 15 years later here you are, I guess you are dead set on getting one and ma and pa are going to dish you the funds.

I'll sell you mine. Local too.

Light RWD coupes are not the best first car for a teenager, but you only live once. So here is my advice don't come to a place like this and start trash talking good advice from senior members just because you think you know it all and the way it is presented may be a bit harsh.

Get your car and do what you like, but if you burn bridges don't come here when you hit a curb and need step by step instructions to replace tie rods.

For now, Shut the fuck up. Find some people with s13's and s14's. Test drive them if they will let you, ride in them if they will let you. Really know the car before you take the leap, and if it is your daily I guarantee you will need to get some good AAA.

At this point you will not find a 240 in good shape period. Parts are starting to get real hard to find, at least body parts, and everything is very expensive. Every single one I've seen on the road in the last 7 yrs has been wrecked and not fixed for some dumb reason. I saw an S14 today that it looked like it never have been washed and had this stupid looking cheap exhaust coming out of the rear. I wish I had taken a picture of it and posted it. Totally getto. Out of every model of car or truck on the street I have never seen one particular model where every single one of them had stuff done to it. There isn't a single 240 on the road thats stock and clean at least around here. I'm sorry for rambling on but its true and sad! I have no idea why I don't see other vehicles like eclipses, etc.. that have ugly cheap aftermarket crap on them before the owner has even bothered to get what needed to be fixed on it in the first place and even bothered to wash it. I'm not saying I don't see other cars that have been abused or have cheap aftermarket stuff on them but not where every single one had it like this car. And I have no idea why.

This is just a retarded statement.

Yesterday I had a friend just call me to tell me about a 240 he just looked at in WA that was in perfect condition.
91 red coupe, manual, PERFECT
the only spot of wear was a touch on the edge of the drivers seat.

My team mate just bought a beautiful hatch here in LA. Still had the luggage straps in the trunk, factory wheel chalks, etc.

You just have to look.
I have no idea why people think 240's are some sort of rare Jem. lol

If you are gonna build a track car, dont waste time looking for something nice.
Just make sure its mechanically sound. Your gonna strip out the interior anyways.

This is just a retarded statement.

Yesterday I had a friend just call me to tell me about a 240 he just looked at in WA that was in perfect condition.

Well I'm just going by what I see here in DFW. I truelly haven't seen a nice one on the road in I don't know how long. Maybe they are all kept in the garage. Most ads I see in yahoo.com aren't all that nice either.

I agree..
Well, Mine looks brand new by some people's accounts but IM not SELLING IT TO SOME IMMATURE KID thats going to abuse it, drift it and go street racing and get someone killed. I got it when I was 21 and never caused a serious accident in it yet (knock on wood). Here is what we see all the time: WFAA.COM : Street racing incident at 1:40am last night along trecherous hwy 360 here in east arlington. Maybe one of the most dangerous hwys to drive on in the country! Usually these are caused by young kids that get these type of cars and mod them. Go wreck them and unfortantely get someone killed including themselves.

Dont get either one, especially if you're still in high school. All these damn kids getting 240's are making my insurance rates climb. Sadly, our cars are the new Honda Civic and are being riced out and "drifted" by these F&F fan boys that are either in HS or fresh out of HS. Sucks.

Do us all a favor and get something else as a daily driver. PLEASE keep all sorts of racing and "drifting" on a legal course. Oh and I put drifting in quotations because Ive seen these dumb kids TRY and drift when all they're doing is wrecklessly taking a turn or doing uncontrolled circles....very ghey.

I say, go for it.

I agree with this.

so....you vote s14 zenki then

First car? Get the S14, because it has air bags.
END.

DISCUSSION.
airbags aren't always safe, so it's not a good idea to get an s14 just because of that

As for the people who say don't go with a 240 as your first vehicle, I must agree. I always loved 240's and always will.

My first vehicle was a POS Toyota pickup (the model that doesn't even have a name, just "pickup"). I was 15 when I got it & it's what taught me how to drive a standard. I kept that truck for about 6-8 months, then sold it and got an S-10. Keep in mind, I still loved 240s, just couldn't afford one at that point. I was 16 when I got the S-10. It was a nice truck and I was able to drive it for about 2-3 months when one day after school, all traffic ahead of me came to a screeching halt. I was able to get completely stopped, but the F-150 behind me was not. It ended up totaling my S-10..

Now, I'm 17 and my S14 is my first car, but 3rd vehicle to own. I haven't wrecked it and I personally believe if I would've had the 240 at age 15, it would've been in the vehicle getting totaled instead.

I would strongly recommend learning how to drive with a less-than-desireable vehicle, at the very least, for a year. Then, when you get your money right, get a 240. In the year you're driving, you can use that time to research and decide if you want an S13 or S14. :coold:

Took me 6 years to get it right
S13 for the track project
S14 for the clean/weekend project
90 Corolla for daily/beater duty

Personal choice, really which do you like best?
I like both so I have one of each

S13 imo tend to be lighter and more nimble but have a lot of rattles
S14 are nicer for a daily, quieter, more solid but some say more slugish/heavier for track.

whatever you do, don't make it your daily and your project

QFT.

You can't make a hoe a housewife.

the truth.

I wish I had a daily driver :hs:

Just out of curiosity...
Why wouldn't a S13/S14 be good for daily driving? Isn't it reliable?

I had an s13 for my first car. As long as you're not an idiot behind the wheel, its fine for a first car. As for which you should get, it depends on your personal preference and how much money you have. I'd recommend not spending all you money on the car since you will likely need some cash for maintenance and repairs. Personally, I would look for the cleanest, best condition 240 I could afford and not care if it was an s13 or s14.

true dat. i was lucky(or unlucky enough haha) to have an s13 as my first car. it became an addiction(still is)

Ok the OP is coming off insulting. He is coming off arrogant. Typical of a kid. LOL Now on the to the subject. First car? Fuck all you idiots who say he should not get a rear wheel drive as a first car. Ya I said that all you Honda boys loving wrong wheel drive!

Fact is learning how to drive in a rear wheel drive car is learning how to drive properly. Fact is if he wants a S chassis he should just get one and not ask everyone's stupid ass opinion.
Fact is he should probably get a S13 over a S14 because they are cheaper and if he does crash it would be easier to replace for cheap.

Fact is this thread has ran its course and its just getting stupid.
OP buy a fucking car , shut the fuck up. Read , learn, drive and grow.

Get something reliable, then pick up a s13/s14. Dont want you to drive it for a week, then it be down for 6 weeks, and then drive it for 2 months, then down for 4 weeks... it sucks, they arent reliable, but they are fun.

what a dumb thread... honestly can a mod lock a thread for being so stupid?

this entire forums (bajillions of threads) is dedicated to s-chassis s13's and s14's being the MAIN ones. I'm sure you can search around and find PLENTY of information of the pros and cons of s13 or s14 and decide for yourself.
