Daniel Petric, a 17-year-old who was on trial for killing his mom and shooting his dad after being banned from playing Halo 3, has been convicted of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder and other charges. Since writing the original article documenting how Petric broke into his father's safe to retrieve his copy of Halo 3 while equipping himself with his father's 9mm handgun, Petric's attempted last words to his parents have revisited me now and again—"Would you guys close your eyes? yea, video games are the reason for our problems, not shitty parenting!
But on a serious note, if that kid wasnt playing halo, he'd be out killing little animals, and then killing his parents for telling him not to or some shit. For all of the "you wont let me play my video game" killings, theres even more kids that kill there parents for various other reasons, kids who dont play video games. I think they have taken the child abuse laws to far. My parents never harmed me out of anger, but they wooped my ass "literally" when I was outta line, and I think I turned out pretty good. Now adays you can go to jail for spanking your kids. Belt to ass > sending to room with tv, computer, ect.
From a psychological standpoint, Kids like that grow up getting whatever they want, and are raised to feel entitled, so when they dont get what they want, they overreact. Also at the same time, they do not have to face consequences for their actions. Consequences, weather big or small are very important in child development because, basically, it teaches them, hey if I do something wrong, something bad will happen to me. Without this, children will not even think about things they are about to do, and what will happen after they do them.
The thoughts "my parents will die and never come back" and "I will go to jail and be in trouble" never crossed that kids mind.

I know you're joking, but some people think that that such a thing is a valid conclusion. I've played 3D shooters since they came out, and I've yet to murder anyone over something trivial. I feel no more prone to violence than I did in 1991 when Wolfenstein 3D came out.

That kid had deeper-seated issues for which video games are not to blame.

I religiously play shooting games, and let me tell you the first time I went to shoot a real gun I was fucking nervous as hell lol. I kill so many people in the games with them that you realize there are no respawn points in rl.

its not the games, its the mufucking media and peers that makes people think videogames are a necessity in life..

At that age, playing video games should be a reward/luxury, not a damn right.

I can imagine every other kid his age has it and parents who probably spoil them/buying them all teh games.. and this kid, has it but his parents control his limitations to it, while his friends are probably talking about it all the time "dude you gotta go on live and play with us" etc etc.. He probably gets the idea in his head "I should get it and all the games like all my friends, fuck this!!"

Plenty of times when i was younger that i had my games taken away from me for a while... what did I do? go ride my bike or play wiht my r/c cars.

And now because of fucking next gen consoles popping up everywhere and changing again in 2 more years they can't decide what console to fucking put it on. FUCK!!!!

but, i dont know if you can blame video games on this. this kid is obviously messed up in the head. i mean he asked his parents to close their eyes. he didnt just go out and get a gun or a knife and murder them. he stole the game and from how it sounds, calmly killed them. as bad as that sounds. sucks people had to be hurt in the process, but it's one potential serial murderer off the streets. maybe now he'll get some help.
