Hey all,

I'm thinking of getting a newer car in the next month or two. I'm looking at getting either an 04-05 WRX or an 04-05 STI. Looks like the regular WRX is around 15k and the STIs are around 20k.

Any other 240 drivers own/driven a WRX or an STI? It doesn't look like there are any at the dealerships around Montgomery, and I don't want to drive out to Atlanta until I am ready to buy a car.

Other than the WRX I'm interested in the EVO, but I'm pretty sure those are quite a bit more than the STI. I was looking at the new Cobalt SS for a bit, but I'm really not a fan of FWD anymore.

I'm just tired of putting $$ into my car, I want something reliable and fairly quick stock.

I don't care for FWD either but the new Cobalt SS is one of the few exceptions.

the Cobalt SS is an awesome car, but the problems that GM is having would ruin it for me. im on a Cobalt SS forum and they seem to have a hard time finding replacement parts. GM does not make rear brake pads for the SS, another person is looking for some suspension piece that GM said there ws only 1 in the country. other than that they seem to be bad ass cars.

Just how do you like it compared to your 240? And is it really worth spending the extra 5k or so to get the STI?

Any crazy mainenance issues with the car so far?

My friend bought an 05 wrx and he's spent like 1-2k and is only putting down 225whp. He loves the car, but he's wishing he got the STI instead.

Get the STI. You'll be happy you did. The STI 6spd is worth it's weight in gold if you're going to be modding the car in any case.

okay

1. I don't own a 240 so wouldn't know...

2. Yes it is worth it people say why didnt you get a wrx and mod it, why spend 10-15k more to make it like and STI and faster?? makes no sense go for the STi....

3. everything for these cars are expensive i paid 650 for new rotors and pads (a 1600 dealer job)

only issue i have is i broke a piece in my trans, the part is 45 bucks just labor kills...

If you decide to get one make sure it's an STI you won't regret it..

I own a 05 Sti and will be purchasing another one i love my car and want another one..

Everyone Tunes them, there are so many options for tuning as well as a huge aftermarket variety of parts everywhere ...

My car has had a few problems and Manufacturer defect though so it was covered(?)

the 6spd Trans has to be solid as hell i love it, i use a twin carbon clutch and it handles it so well...

Thanks for the info, what kinda problems and defects did your car have?

One of my friend was suggesting a 2003 or so M3, can pick those up for like 20-22k but they all have around 80-100k miles for that price. I don't think I'd want to deal with maintenance on a BMW either lol.

A few other cars I was looking at was a WS6 Trans Am, and an S2000... but those cars are all completely different categories, can't really compare em I guess.

I have an 2005 STI and it is hard to compare to my 240...They are really different cars..The 240 is a fun summer toy and the STI is killer year round! Awesome in the snow.... It is almost more addictive to mod the STI than the 240!!

Subarus are not hard but a little odd to work on but parts are just as easy to get as nissan parts ... as a matter of fact if you look close they are the same company.

I have a 02 WRX with a lot of suspeinsion work, vf39 and light engine mods. For less than 5K i can make similar power to a Sti, out turn, outbrake and faster response than the 2.5 (thank you Autronic). But if i had the extra money to do it all over again i would do the same mods on a Sti... why? Because the insurance of that 6spd is a very good piece of mind and at an average cost of 3-4K to upgrade that 5K does not sound so bad.

If you just want a nice car to drive the wrx is great for your all round needs and an occasional speed punch.

I used to have a WRX, it had vf39 and other crap. 270whp 300wtq.

Really good cars, I owned mine for a year with no problems, until a lady decided to t-bone me.

I only did canyon runs and crap with it though, never took it to the track.

I'm having a TON more fun with my 240sx.

Yeah I can agree to that but when you look at the price its crazy for subarus though.

- Sr clutch 300.00 WRX/STi clutch 700-900.00
- Body braces cheap... subaru CRAZY
- Turbo stock or upgrade, new or used nissan decent subaru crazy
- 02> WRX/ Sti = no junkyard parts

Just remember that when you go AWD with Subaru or Mitsu you are playing with the hype machines of today and thus the big ballas. So you are going to pay $$$$. This is not ment to be an insult in any way but just keep that in mind before you jump into the ring.

Def go with the STi if your going to end up modding... its kind of hard NOT to. I ended up going with a 2005 (didn't like the 02 bugeye or 06 hawkeye) WRX mainly cuz its going to be an every day daily driver, just a bit better on MPG and insurance, and I DON't want to mod it at all. I only went as far as some volk wheels and a COBB accessport pre-installed/off the shelf fuel map. For me, if they stocker 2.0l goes.... hopefully not anytime soon, then I'll opt for a v7 STi motor/drivetrain swap. ($$$ :wtc: ) The STi and EVO attract cops even in its stock form.

I've owned a 06 STi for almost 2 yrs, before trading it in for an evo 10. I kept it stock the whole the time. As with the consensus, I agree it's better to spend a little more and opt for the STi instead of the WRX. However, if you plan just to daily drive the car, the WRX really should be more than sufficient for most people.

Things I liked about the STi:
-Great engine. Very smooth, torquey, great power stock.
-Good overall handling & grip.
-Great brakes. They good feedback and I don't ever recall having brake fade.
-Reliable for the 11k miles I owned the vehicle.
Comfortable ride for a high performance car. Suspension is higher and soft. Car is quiet even at cruising speeds.
-Durable paint quality

Cons:
-Light steering that doesn't give good feedback.
-Front seats built for the obese.
-Vague shifter.
-Car boring to drive unless pushed hard.

I liked the STi for it's overall performance, but honestly I thought it had some shortcomings. What I found most difficult to live with with the incredibly light steering. For me, this made the STi was difficult to get used in spirited driving, and boring to drive on my daily commute. I think the relatively soft suspension might have reduced overall feedback as well, but at least it was very comfortable. The only times I can say I enjoyed my STi were at autoX events and canyon drives (I live very near Mulholland and Sunset Blvd in socal, so I can have fun with the car more often). Otherwise, I can't say I enjoyed it.

The shifter was really vague and rubbery. It was easier for me to mis-shift in this car more than others. Some ppl on the Subaru forums mentioned that the factory short shifter or some of the aftermarket shifter bushings could have remedied this concerm, but that's not something I have any direct experience with.

Later I switched to the evo 10, and I couldn't have been more happier with the way the evo drives in terms of the feedback it gives, and the resulting confidence it inspires. It's not quite as refined as the STi in termns of build quality, and quality of materials imo, but it is much more fun to drive. I even enjoy driving it in my commute.

I'd really urge you to check out an evo. If you can live with the relatively harsh ride and spartan interior, I think it would be much more enjoyable car. Unless you're doing track events and/or live around areas where you can push the STi safely, I think the STi is kinda of waste.

As far as mods go, aside from the oem shifter and/or shifter bushings, maybe nicer seats, I think you're really better off investing in track events instead to get to know the car better. Maybe an exhaust would be worthwhile if you enjoy the way the boxer sounds. It's setup very well from the factory to begin with, and it appears to be track ready from the start. Unless you plan to build a full track car, show car, or dyno queen, I see little reason to dump more $$$ into it.

While I've always respected the STi for it's overall performance capabilities, it was also coincidently one of the most boring cars I've ever owned.

Daniel.

Been there they tried to steal my car in 07 when i went to the movies, couldn't get it started they had another car an s4 try to push it i guess to kick start it and nothing...

Found the car at the back of the lot with the lights on and ignition popped and both bumpers on the floor and a huge dent in my fender looked like a frustration kick, nothing was stolen out of the car and i had a shit load of stuff in the trunk and back seats....

After that i started taking my ECU out everytime i went out and bought a new steering wheel with quick release and hub lock...

I guess they thought it was an 04 with no immobilizer oh well....

just get at 05+ cause the new sti got stock alarm and immobilizer. Plus the 05+ aren't inchangable with the wrx either. The only year that was inchangable was the 04. Even with the rims. The 05+ u can't switch rims with a 04 or any wrx. The wrx are 5x100 and the 05+ 5x114.5 so the lug are different, same with the suspension. people who said the wrx can be easily upgrade to the sti is just wrong. everything about the sti is so different from a wrx and sti. it is like a regular civic and a civic sI. it is a whole different machine and suspension set up too.

I had a 04 wagon converted to a sti then rebuilt the top/bottom and regeared the tranny, threw some coils and te's on it, gt30, hydra emu blah blah blah, dynoed to the wheels at 400 hp.

That combined with the 30/70 center diff split and re01's, the car had so much grip it was mind blowing.

Sold it to a dude in Colorado.

Only thing is that the tranny went out on mine for no reason. As well as a few other people I know.

I suggest putting the 05 hubs on the car because they switched to 5x114.3

yesss there you go, i dunno about the swapping ur gears getting a dog box and getting rid of 6 speed, shit is like 10k+ you dont really need that for a street sti. My friend has one, i love it. FUCK a cobolt SS FF  Fuck a evo, ive had friend who have traided their evo9's for eather 10's or sti's. Trust you'll be much happier with a sti!!!!!

most of sti owners had a civic before unless their an old man,

then you'll trade it for a Porsche turbo :bigok:

the sti is 10x better then the reg wrx and the evo. I think for daily driving the sti is very reliable and very quick stock. like i had just said my buddy has one.

One day we were in studio city and some supercharged mustang pulled up next to us at the light, reved, we were like fuckin shit box. Light turned green and we both punched it and we jumped off the line and stayed in front untill 4th and slow down. He also has a downpipe exhaust and bov, when that shit is on WOW. yes the sti is alot but worth it. Your in the miltary you can afford it

had a stock WRX for a week....way too slow.
traded it back the next week for a nicely modded WRX Wagon that was putting down numbers that would make STi's wonder why they couldn't pull away. All I was missing was that little extra torque off the line and then the STi owners would have really hated my WRX.

If you are going WRX, you HAVE to go 06-07. EJ25, 4 pot brakes in front, 2 pot in rear.
Otherwise, 05 or newer STi...05's have some advantages (other than the hubs being 5x114.3) over the 04 STi.

Once you test drive the STi...you will be in trouble ;)

As for the new WRX....

The 09 WRX is quicker in the 1/4 mile than the 08 STi....
I think they are 260hp and have a gear ratio that gives them a slight advantage over the 08 STi and her 6 speed.

ronmcdon
01-15-2009, 03:05 AM
09 wrx is arguably the best car you can get for 25k. I feel bad for 08 owners. unless subaru updates the sti accordingly, it makes the sti appear to be even more of a questionable value. It's also an appealing alternative to used STi's which typically go for the 20-29k range in decent condition. I'd like to see how some of the reviews measure it up against the current STi and evo aside from acceleration figures.

the ralliart was a letdown though. It's expensive at over 27k. doesn't make sense to skimp 5k for a proper evo, and the auto only option is a turn off. also it has minimal publicity. most ppl don't even know its available

Yea 05 seems to be the one to go with. I found one on autotrader in ATL for $18k with 10k miles. Seems kind of fishy though, most are 20k with 40-50k miles. I'm pretty set on getting the STI, just want to pay off a couple debts first. Should be good to go around late feb early march.

The one I was looking at had 3 gauges on top of the dash directly above the center console. That isn't stock is it?

I don't want a car that has been moded at all.

I'm so hood
I wear my pants below my waist
And I never dance when I'm in this place
Cause you and your man is plannin to hate (I'm so hood)
And I got these golds up in my mouth if you get closer to my house then you know what I'm talking bout
I'm out the hood
And if you feel me put your hands up (hood)
My hood ninjas can you stand up (I'm so hood)
If you not from here you can walk it out and you not hood if you don't know what I'm talkin bout

Ya. I thought I was going to be happy with my WRX. Considering I already have a 400whp 240. Not so much, I now want to mess with my Subaru more then my 240.

I just checked out insurance on a 2005 STI, USAA quoted me 1500/6 months or so, Geico was a bit less, but I'll be losing my military discount soon and the price will be almost the same as USAA.

I'm 25, single and have nothing on my record. Price seems pretty high to me :(

How much ya paying Stiizy?

That does seem high. I pay 108 for my wrx, thats with an accident and a serious speed ticket, and I am 21.

I went and talked to my moms agent about a 05 STi and they told me 330 a month. I have never checked with my agent.

We pay 1800 per 6 months but that's with 5 cars so idk but i think the breakdown when i check was 147 a month...

Not bad...

But like the Evo insurers hate these cars...

Hell yeah, I got quoted $4200 a year by myself. Since my awesome mother hooked me up and put me under her policy, it's like $950 for the whole damn year.
