I have a question
does anyone know, what i could use to quiten my gearbox down( straight cut )

Im thinking buy some special carpet rug that reduces noise down?

or does the gearbox need cooling?? Does anyone have any info behind any of this?

i will be putting some sound deadner under the tunnel to quiten it down, but i also want to make it so its not asloud outside

any help would be appreciated
thank you
Alex

You can maybe dynamat the underside of the transmission tunnel, but chances are with a straight cut gearset, you will never quiet the thing. Why would you put something like that in your street car and then worry about the sound anyway?

I would love hearing the sound of a straight cut gearbox...

No kidding. I'm sure it would get real old if you dd something like that. Of course, that wouldn't be something you dd.

You're not going to be able to quiet down a Straight Cut Gearbox a lot.

I am curious...What transmisison/gearset are you using? What engine are you using this with?

I am curious because I will go with some setup involving a Straight Cut gearset, so far I have really like the idea of the PPG Gearset. Unfortunately the way our bellhousings are made in comparison to the RX7 makes it a little harder to find cheap alternatives to a dogbox like a Jerico or Ford T5 Transmission with a gearset.

Thanks,
Sean C.

It's a nice street car that i use for track.

2.2Litre stroker engine with solid lifters and sleeves and what not.

Quaife transmission i am using, they are made in the UK ( trust - used them to make all there gearbox's and just rebadged them)

i do want it more quite, its too loud, however im going to try JUTE , apparently that stuff works great??

Anyone used JUTE before?
i want to put another layer under my carpet all in my car, that should quiten it down a fair bit?

No offense to S13/S14 owners but they are so poor.

A lot of the people on here don't know much about straight cut gearboxes let alone could they EVER afford one.

I would recommend searching some more high-end enthusiast forums where race cars are built.

Ah, cool cool.

Being poor and being knowledgeable have no correlation. I've been in a dozen cars with straight cut gears being a part of the car enthusiast scene, and I'm sure most of these guys have been around them. If you want quiet I would coat the transmission with something and the tunnel with something lighter, keep the extra weight down low. I'm not sure how many sound deadening materials are weather proof but you could use something similar to dynamat and then coat it with sound deadening paint. Check out an audio forum, race car builders don't know shit about making transmissions quiet, they're too busy making the car fast

Yum. All that needs to be said. Though if I had to listen to it for more than about 10-15 minutes a day, I'd shoot myself.

I've been looking at "LizardSkin".

Says it can be applied thinner than "stick on products" and since it's a spray on, you can't put it everywhere. Inside the interior, underside of the tunnel, etc.

I would try to quiet it down for a track car myself..
Sure it sounds cool for about 2 min, but after that it would be annoying as hell!

shit, i got annoyed just watchin the vid.

EZCool - automotive insulation and battery solutions (http://www.ezcool.ca/heatshield/index.html)

ive found this type of material to be superior to dynamat. I think dynamat tar-like insulators are GARBAGE. Its the equivalent of tar-and-feathering your car.

I regret doing it to my S13 and spent WEEKS removing it along with the factory sound deadener. If I do end up using an insulator again, it will be the type shown above.

there's a video of a guy with a RHD s chassis (s13/180sx who cares...) with straight cut on youtube... but who the hell makes straight cut for our engines/trans??

Quaife in the UK make it

Don't put anything directly on the trans. They get very hot when used on the track, and they need to be able to dissipate this heat.

Jute is really heavy for a track application. Anything will lower the resonance but not the noise.

PPG and HKS is all that is coming to memory.

Greddy(Quaife) used too...maybe Quaife still does.

My buddy had a dogbox in his WRX a few years ago and even though im not a fan of the car, riding around in that thing was awesome!
