You had a sohc speedo/tach. I believe you will need a dohc tach now.

Yep, sohc motors had a different signal from the dohc/sr signal. replace your gauge cluster with a dohc cluster.

does the dohc cluster plug right up to the sohc connecters or do i need to change some things?!?!?!?!?!?!

Not too sure. I have been told it is a plug and play install, but I've only ever done a swap on a 93 coupe with the DOHC cluster in it already.
BTW, don't open multiple threads on the same topic, people don't like that and it's a good way to get in trouble on this board.

^^^ what he said.....multiple threads on the same issue :nono:
and yes it will plug right in.

if no one posts a reply i can go check for you as i have both a dohc and sohc cluster in my car as im doing the single to twin cam swap.
I looked at them before and i believe they have the same connections. Ive read you can get a single cam tach to work. link to that is here Technical Articles: Converting Your SOHC Tach to Read DOHC Signal (http://www.nicoclub.com/articles.php?id=272023) but ive never tryed it and thats for a twin cam ka

I have often wondered if another tach from another nissan car could possibly work, for example a sentra Tach since it used the sr motor. just an idea.

why?
its not worth the trouble. use a DOHC cluster. easy.

If you care about RPM's you need to get the JDM 180SX Gauge Cluster.
Reason being is because the USDM DOHC Gauge Cluster will not work with the sr because RPM's are different, the KA redlines at like 5500 or 6000 (can't remember) but the SR redlines at 7500, which is accurate.
When I had the USDM DOHC Gauge Cluster, it didn't even read MPH correctly. But that's just my personal experience.

The DOHC cluster works fine with an SR, while it may not be dead on accurate (no tachometer ever is) it reads fine. a SOHC tachometer though doesn't work at all.
To the OP- you've already asked this question and gotten an answer, why create another thread?

So if my RPM gauge didn't work, it must have just been a problem with the cluster itself, correct?

Had to be.

It would be nice to have more options especially cheaper ones than getting a 180sx one. It seems that other nissan cars are more prevelant in junkyards than 92-93 240sx's.

Yes, there's also '91s and '94s too.

couldnt you just splice the wire that sends the tach signal to the ecu and just wire it up to the sohc tach?
edit nvm saw the conversion at the top!

oops, i feel dumb. 91-94. anyhow it seems that 89-90 240's are all i see at the junkyards around me.

Or you can swap a JDM tach into your existing gauge cluster, but that would require more work.

use a DOHC tach it plugs right in...problem solved

u have to put the ka speed sensor in the sr tranny to get it to read the right mph
