well since i got my car, ive noticed really horrible gas mileage. I'm getting 10-11 mpg on my car, its a 89 240 hatch. It has a 93 ka24e, stock everything except for the intake. doesn't need an oil change or filters. where should i begin or is this normal?

unless you're racing...not normal.

are your brakes dragging? lol

amdnivram

nope lol my brakes arent dragging. I trying to find the cause of this terrible gas mileage.

Id pull the plugs, they are gonna be fouled from running rich. You probably have an injector or two stuck open flooding a cylinder, then check maf and o2.

you mean de right?

no its a ka24e. as far as the cel, it isnt working, i think the bulb burned out. I'll give the injectors a look.

if i do have a stuck injector, how do i fix it?

if its a ka24e its a single cam off a 89-90
cant be 93
if the injector is stuck open, best bet is to swap em out
check your maf, o2 sensor, and find out if your running too rich
if your car reeks of gas when u run it then ur probably running too rich

amdnivram
01-11-2009, 02:06 PM
yeah, it does reek of gas when its running, how much will fixing it cost me? yeah i was thinking of something else lol i was going to get a dual cam 93 to swap that in, but i'd rather wait till sometime in the future for a sr.

anyone know what replacing the injectors usually runs?

I doubt that you are going to need to replace the injectors. My guess is that your bad gas mileage is the result of a bad o2 sensor. Call your local auto parts and get a new o2 sensor, replace that and see if that fixes it. If that doesnt fix it then move on to the next thing and at least you know your o2 sensor is good then.

I get about 19-21 depending on how I drive in my 93 Hatch (DOHC)

amdnivram
01-11-2009, 06:10 PM
should i replace the cel bulb? im really not sure whats wrong with the cel, or if it even works properly. i'll get an start on the running rich tomorrow i guess =/ lol

YoungRookie

i would go ahead and replace the cel bulb. I mean it wouldnt hurt anything.

If you're going to use this motor until you get an SR in the future, I'd go ahead and give it a general tune up regardless of what's wrong with it. Why not, right? All total, it wouldn't cost you too much if you do it all yourself. New O2 sensor (sounds like the culprit!), oil change, air filter change, check the MAF just in case, and get new spark plugs and wires.

If general maintenance doesn't fix it, you might be looking at new injectors.

what do you mean you think it burned out? turn the ignition to the on position and it will light up all the bulbs... if the CEL is off than it's burned out.

If I had to guess, I'd say MAF or O2 sensor

amdnivram
01-11-2009, 06:59 PM
yeah it wont turn on when the its in the on position so its burned out. i'll do the tune up and see what happens.

have a feeling its my fuel pump

car was maintained very well from previous owner he gave me an extra fuel pump but i dont know how old or what model it is so maybe he was hinting it needs a new one

maybe o2 sensor shit i dont know

Don't have to replace, you can rebuild. SOHC injectors are top feed so they shouldn't be that much, when I had my MSD 52lb top feed domestics style injectors rebuilt / cleaned by FIC ( Fuel Injector Clinic )

Fuel Injector Cleaning and Flow Testing - Fuelinjectorclinic (http://www.fuelinjectorclinic.com/services/clean-flowtesting.html)

For my KA-T project since I bought them used with unknown mileage/condition on them it cost me like $76 total with shipping back to me. Thats roughly $19 per injector with tax and return shipping. Took one day plus the shipping time.

just take out ur ECU and check for codes if u think the bulbs is burnt

OK, I just had a similar problem with my SOHC coupe. Do a FULL tune up on your car. Air filter, fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor button oil filter and an oil change. Also, check the injector plugs. That is what the problem was with mine. The injector plugs were bad and my number 2 cylinder was not firing properly. I replaced them all with the smallest female spade connectors I could find and heat shrank them all. I also did the O2 sensor, coolant temp sensor and the fuel pressure regulator. I think all my bases are covered and I will let you know about the MPG later. BUt try those things. It may be as simple as that.

i have the same problem...but on a de

i used to get around 25-26 mpg.

now im getting 19-20

i have new o2 sensor, new plugs, new injectors, new cap and rotor, new wires..

would a new fuel pump affect excessive gas consumption? would an egr code affect gas consumption as well? how do i check if the injector is stuck open?

i didnt check the timing after i replaced the cap and rotor...do i need to do that as well because i don't seee the point in checking the timing if i didnt move/rotate the distributor.

I have an SR, I upgraded my fuel filter & fuel pump at the same time, my mileage doubled.

You didn't list those two, so chances are they'll give you a good up in gas mileage.

i'm confused becuase the OP listed that he has an 89 shell, but a 93 DOHC transplanted engine, is that right? so was the wiring harness and DOHC ECU came w/ that and installed properly?

side note to koops, you just may be running on winter gas blend since your mpg isn't as drastic as the OP

in both cases, pull the trouble codes from your vehicle's pc and update us

im also getting bad gas mileage, i have a 95 ka24de with new o2 sensor, new spark plugs and wires about 1000miles on them same with the injectors, but im running a 300zx fuel filter and a 255 walbro fuel pump. would that cause it to get less gas mileage.
my mods are s13 cams, pulleys, intake, exhuast.

i just want good gas mileage, also it smells like gas when i drive then i park it i smell it. how do i check if running rich

I want to sort everything out to mint status, so help me out please :)
