Well, after being stuck on the highway for 6 hrs this past sunday with the inability to put the car in gear, I just called the local nissan dealer to find out what happened with the car.
"Your throw bearing went, and your syncros are gone"
They are quoting me $900 CAN for a used tranny, or $2150 for a new one. Are these prices realistic, or am I getting hosed by the dealer?
Also, they mentioned something about my gas tank straps need to be replaced ($120) and the whole exhaust needs to be replaced.
Yeah, delightful news to say the least. Now this is all in parts BEFORE labor.
Does this all sound legit?
Yes, this is a good time to get a SR now. :D However, I need to do pricing, etc and find out how much coin I'll need to get what I need. So I am assuming that a new dohc KA setup is a lot cheaper than a SR setup?
Sorry for all the newbie questions, I'm just a starving student and this news does not come at a good time.

i wondering how you actually were able to drive the car before. its almost as if you were driving a *gasp* dead car D:
you can get a used tranny in good condition for significantly less than C$500 ... or SHOULD be able to. For $900 you should get a whole motor, harness and tranny with a good clutch.
In other words, you're getting hosed. Your not being able to get in gear could be a synchro problem, but that would mean your synchros are really, REALLY gone. That, and/or your clutch wasn't disengaging, which could be (AFAIK) a number of things...
Basically, go buy yourself a used tranny off a crashed '97 or '98 and bring it to a decent auto shop. :) you should be able to get a new tranny (forget your exhaust, it's probably just a little rust... and maybe a leak or two... no big deal) and get it in for about $600 or $700 CDN incl. labor... but that's just a guess.

If the exhaust isn't noisy and it isn't leaking before the cat, it can wait. Replacing the gas tank straps is a very good idea though. It's a pretty serious danger if you live in a salty area. They rusted pretty badly in my mom's car, enough to cause a very slight fuel leak at the tank (there was no gas on the ground, but the car always smelled like gas in the morning)

With all the people swapping, you should get a tranny for 250$ CDN!! (that's the price I sold my old tranny)

Any specific spots I can look? Junkyards up north (where I'm currently) don't have ANY 240's. I called over 10 yards.
I'm hoping I can find something reasonable. With little other things such as the timing chain rattle, and my exhaust is in really bad condition and the lack of cash, its looking like I may have to depart with my baby. :(
i'll keep an eye out for you!

Where are u exactly? I had my tranny rebuilt in TO just a couple months ago. $1200 for seal and bearing kits installed. $900 sounds decent.

Hell I have a KA+tranny sitting at my house right now that I would sell to you for considerably less than $900
It's out of a '91 w/ 100k. Good leakdown and compression (within spec). The tranny is in good shape also. I never modded the car or even really drove it hard.
BTW its a one owner engine and tranny (me:D )

I'm currently in North Bay, Ontario.
As long as I can load the stuff in the back of a truck, I'll haul it up here. I'll go anywhere in Ontario and most of Quebec to get something within a good price range.
nrcooled, am I close to you?

If you want a better tranny for less, look for one from a 1981 200sx, ive seen them for 140, and i guess its an overall better tranny, i hear it has overall better gearing.
