Hi, I am just about to purchase new wheels for my 1998 S14 and have seen so much conflicting advice as to what will or won't fit. Currently, I am looking at 8 x 18 Front with 225/40x18 tyres and 9 x 18 rear with 265/35/18 tyres. I have found info that says other people have done this, but I'd like to know for definite before committing. I basically want the largest width possible on the rear.

you can go 18x10 at least on the rear

For 8", bump the tire width up to 235; and for 9", bring it down to 255. I've heard of 9" front/10" rear, but I don't know if the car was lowered or if they had rubbing problems.
(I personally wouldn't stagger wheels b/c you can't rotate them and it gives the car more tendency to push--that is, unless you putting down some nice power.)
i've seen one guy with 19 x 9 's i believe omg thas the sweetest 240 i think i've ever seen.... less the turbo and yadda yadda yadda <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'> but u can fit up to 19 i think.

i run 18/40/225 all around, it is a bumpy ride. it handles much better than the 15's, but if you want performance not looks get 17's. i hit a pothole on a backroad going 45 and thought i hit a tree. there is no give and no bounce. granted the 18's look sweet but i would not reccomend if you are going just performance. i can't imagine riding on 19's.

this is exactly why i just want 16's, the tires could make up for the wheel gap that might be left over neway.
how would the tires make up for the gap?

well, when u go w/ bigger rims, ur getting more rim, less tire, not less tread though. 15 and 16 inch rims will have bigger tires for the most part. that make sense? that's why the bigger size rims give u a bumpier ride, there's not as much tire in contact to give support w/ the road.
agreed <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> makes sense now.

Yeah the last sentence was a little off. We're talking about sidewall height, not tread. For a given overall diameter (given that you want to keep the speedometer accurate), a larger diameter wheel will have to have a shorter sidewall (obviously),and less sidewall compliance resulting in quicker turn-in and a bumpier ride. If it's acceleration your after, stick with 13-15 inches diameter, but it looks a little odd. The fashion is to go big with wheel diameters, but it's all about rotational inertia and rubber simply weighs less than metal. Sport Compact Car did a big test on this a while back. Ever noticed how small the wheel diameter on a F1 car is. 17" is a good compromise between inertia and looks. However, I assume that the original question was concerning width, not diameter, and it sounds like 10" wide on the rear is the answer. That should be wide enough for any amount of power for street use. Of cource, if your actually competing in some form, better read the rule book before spending that cash.
also dont forget the material that the rims are made of. aluminum would be alot lighter than some of the other rims out there and make a difference. #### ive seen magnesium also if your eally want to go all out.

i might get those kosei k1 racing rims, they're pretty light, but they're only in 15 X 7, i really want 16 X 8 in the rear n 16 X 7 in the front, nebody know where i could find some? i've only seen one on the net, n one in person, both were only 2 for the rear though, n i'm looking for all 4.

getting fronts and rears of different sizes means you can't rotate your tires properly. waste of $$$

well...that's why i'm asking if somebody knows of ne 4 lug 16 X 8 rims, cuz i've only seem them for the rear, n then the 2nd widest is 16 X 7, which i would put on the front if i had to, but i would rather get 16 X 8's all around.

if they fit the rear properly, then they'll fit the front too.

yeah, but i've only seen 2 of the 16 X 8's (jspec.com), not four, so i was just saying it would be better to have the 8's on the back n the 7's on the front. i want 16 X 8's all around, it's hard to find 4 actual brand new rims that r 16 X 8.

I roll on 19"s on my Maxima and it sucks, I'd love to go back to 18"s which I had before
I use 235/35ZR-19 Pirelli tires... loud as anything
I'll probably buy a set of 17"s and just use the 19"s for shows... I dont think its worth having that big of a rim if the car is a daily driver, too easy to bend and it feels like your ass is dragging over every single bump in the road
