In writing JAP. would be an abbrev, but i can see if i used the word "jap" in speech it would be bad.
however the derogitory term of 50 years ago (i woudl figure) is hardly still offensive, and is more in joking sense.
i am filipino and am often called "flip" i can see how offense may have been taken years ago, but it's nothing more than a way to generalize now, or abbrev. b/c American culture is lazy.

"drift" is an english word.
"do-ri-fu-to" is the japanese spelling of the word "drift". So really, "dori" doesn't mean anything-- it's like asking what "drif" means. "dori" is just a string of two "alphabet letters" if you may.

I spent 6 great years on Okinawa. The Okinawan culture IS different and while they are technically Japanese, many Okinawans do consider themselves different. The culture has more of a peasant history and the sushi is better.

Mainlanders are a bit more high strung and more in a rush. Okinawa ia more laid back. It is harder to catch a train on Okinawa. :D

I am Japanese here. As for the Oki thing, yeah many consider each other a little different (on both sides). Some even go to the point of calling Oki's "Okinawa-jin" like a whole different race. :eek: The language is slightly different as well. And wtvr gladhatter said.

Little late to the party, but i have heard that dori means street. I dunno if that is slang or not, but I was told it could mean "street" or short for "dorifto/dorifuto". It is interesting to see how some japanese say dorifto vs. doriftuto. Ove rthe summer, the guys i would *TRY* to communicate with would only understand dorifto, not "drift" or "slide" ahaha. Oh, btw, "slide" is also "suberu". Wonder where Subaru got their name... hehehe. (unless of course the "a" changes the whole meaning, in which case i will kindly shoot myself in the foot.):D

What are you talking about? Chokudori is a drift style that is done in Japan as well (hence the japanese terminology). Not just in the "ghetto american style" whatever that is.

For my cell phone message I put that guy from the options videos on it. I forget his name but it's that tarzan guy with the white skyline, he's allways slappin people. I have no clue what he is saying but it's all good cuz I get a lot of wrong numbers so I hope for at least a second they think they called long distance. plus, at the time I put it on my brother didn't have any respect for ''Japanese 4 bangers'', he would allways make fun of me and tell me I could never beat his car in the 1/4 mile (66 ford fairlane with a 390). So it would bother the hell out of him every time he had to listen to my message.

I have sence then converted him to thoes little 4 bangers, he wants to sell his fairlane and get a GST, it's a start.

well this is semi-relevent...i just took my midterm for Japanese 1020 today....its a difficult language to learn but i want to so i do decently and i am starting to learn a good amount of kanji as well...for any other kids out there in collage i reccomend that you take japanese at least as your language requirement...watching option vids is ten times better cause you can pick up fragments of what they are saying:D

Actually here's one that just about everybody in this country pronounce WRONG and I just can't figure out why: Karaoke.
It's not pronounced (Care-EE-Oh-KEE) It's pronounced (Kah-Rah-Oh-keh). I don't know how people would think there's an "EE" sound in the middle of that word.
