why the fuck do all skate shoes have vulcanized soles now? i stopped skating when i was about 17, i stopped buying skate shoes a year or so later. at the time, they were all very comfortable and air pockets in the heel were pretty standard. now everything's chuck soles and half cab knockoffs. who still makes the kind i like?

Ahhh man you're telling me! Imagine how the people who actually skate feel.
I hate that vulcanized no padding bruised heels have to rambo lace so they dont fly off your feet shit.
It really is hard to find good shoes these days.
Lucky for me 'es still makes the Accel which is the greatest skate shoe of all time. I'll rock em till they stop making em.
Other than that I like Nike Mid Dunks a lot and the P-Rod II's arent too bad.
I'm really picky when it comes to shoes. Once I see a sick pair I have to buy them and basically just clean them everytime I wear them to keep them looking new.
I even have a pair of the original 'es kostons in mint condition. The Lakai version sucks balls
My number one skate shoe that I wish I had is the 'es Koston 2 in pretty much any color. I would sell my soul for a pair

I had a pair of Getz back in highschool... they look dope but theyre soo frekkin hard to skate. Toe was waay to stiff/ thick for my taste. I felt like I was skating D3 Osirises (not a good thing)...
anyways... SB dunk lows.
Nike dunks have always had a thing going... even before Nike knew it was a good skate shoe. Stitching, the toe bend area, front laces not too close to the edging..... perrrrfect.

DVS are like skating with metal soles.
Shit is too thick and hard.
Skateshoes are made for skateboarding.
Hence the reason they are thinned down and not so bulky.
you can actually feel the board now, and you can catch that shit better with sticky soles that dont have a giant airpad inside.
And the airpad aint gonna make any difference once you start passing the 8-10 stair limit.
Plus ramp and park skating is SO much better with the sticky soles.
If your not skating, don't Pose.
go buy something else.
Pretty simple.

On topic.
I haven't seen the name "emerica", in a long ass time. They virtually disappeared up here about 4 years ago...

I haven't skated in a while
When I started, DVS didn't exist.
They came around when people started wearing skate shoes just to fit in the "style".
I remember that must have been when the Osiris stuff came out too. Sort of like snow boots....
I have a couple pairs of "skate" shoes these days.
EMERICA Transit (Ed Templeton shoe)
I love them. They are light, but have some padding.
Other shoes I have enjoyed from back then.
Emerica Marc Johnson (the ones that kinda looked like Kostons
Es Eric Koston. The original ones. They came in white/gum, black/gum/ blue/ gum.
I even had an early pair of DC shoes (which I didnt like). This was when their logo actually had a 5 point star rather than the bunch-o-point star logo.
The original Es Muska shoes were kind of neat, but a bit bulky. blue/gum.
Sheep made shoes for a bit. Templeton had a shoe with them. My brother had those.
I liked most of the Sole Tech stuff.
shower time....

01-07-2009, 09:18 AM
Sole tech makes some legit shoes. I've had a few pairs of Etnies I liked. Noone can deny Es came out with a lot of badass shoes. Emerica has some fresh kicks.
DVS and Lakai are pretty baller.
A lot of people have been wearin Adidas lately...
I don't really like a lot of DC and Fallen...
NikeSB are the best
DeathMetal
01-07-2009, 09:22 AM
The Original Rowley classics made out of "leather" before they went vegan were the shit.

I used to skate back in highschool. Now I can't stand to wear normal tennis shoes. Skateshoes feel so much better.
I feel you on that whole shoe situation now. I don't like to order shoes off the Internet because I like to try them on before I buy them (crazy, I know.) There's not many local skate shops around here though.
I have to buy from PacificSun and other other mall 'skate shops.' Shits lame, all the shoes have these retarded graphics on them and don't feel like the shoes used to.
Is Osiris still around? I bought a pair of them once, they felt nice.
+1 on Lakai though.
I rocked Globe too, they were cheap (as in price) lol
Anyone get forced to wear Airwalks? They weren't really skate shoes at all, just flat bottom. Bought them from Payless. After about a week, I'd be putting ductape around the outside toe. Shit would hurt when your toe would poke through and it'd scrape!
What's a good place to buy shoes online now? Guess I'm gonna have to break down and get some from online. Vans hurt my feet and seem like I have to wear them with certain outfits. Fuck that, shoes should go with every out fit.

You guys realize that all the "best" skate shoes labeled, where gum soled for the most part.
So are the highest selling shoes, and market changing shoes.
Reynolds
Kostens
Dogtown vans now(trendy fucks)
i used to wear alot of IPATH before I got sponsored by Circa.
Nike seems to be the only one that can make a non Gum soled shoe work these days.
But the only Nike i can skate is Dunk SB's.
the other shit is just too thick to properly feel through.
And Marc Johnson is the only one that can skate Nike Cortez, lol
And Adidas?? what, shell toes again??
Thats just a trend. They came around in 1992 as well.
I remember Paolo Dias was riding for them forever! Him and the Gonz.
2 wierd dudes! 2 weird skate shoes.

Im sure you have a local shop, support it!
Osiris, lol, fucking spaceshoes.
Lakai has mainly a gum sole line up, but good shoes. thats what Im using now ;)
Globes where cheap, and as thick as a tank. like the fricken Chet 3's. they could replace steel toe boots! lol

Oh, my buddy had the Lakai Guy Mariono model shoes.
Those were wild. They looked like running shoes, but I liked them.
I had a pair of Lakais but I can't remember what they were.
Sal 23s were so cool. I never got a pair though.
I like the very first Kostons without the air bubble.

i wandered into a PacSun last week which got me thinking about getting skate shoes again. they didn't have any! they don't sell any shoes at all anymore. luckily there's a Journeys right across from it that does. also a dozen skate shops around town
Anyone get forced to wear Airwalks?i, and every other person under 30 at the end of the last century, LOVED Airwalks! payless re-issued The One a few years ago and i hunted down a pair. awesome.
this year they're bringing back the Jim Shoes, and i'll definitely be getting a pair of the tennis shoes

I currently got into back into skating again and im riding a pair of Supra Vulk Lows
really nice feel, Its hard to find shoes that actually work for skateboarding most of the time the shoe is much too stiff, sole too thick, and the tongue is Gigantic. NOt my flavor.

I skated alot when I was younger [9-14] but was always poor so I skated anything I could get my hands on. Mainly Airwalks and Vans.
I remember the Vans having a different feel and I didnt like them.
I still wear "skate shoes" because I'm a fanboy *snip*.
I like the feel of the board under the DC shoes I currently have, but their definitely not comfortable.

I use to buy Vans back in the day for like $5 in Riverside. Then, they became trendy and the price SHOT up. For walking purposes the thicker soled shoes are great and have a nice style, but they're not the best for skating. You really need to be able to minipulate the sole with your foot and for feel.
Actually, the best shoes I find for skating are found at places like Payless and stuff. They don't last long but are cheap as hell.

haha, i had airwalks way back when. god, its probably been 15 years now. holy shit. i remember soaps, too. holy shit! i was a fruit booter way back when. but i wore only DC for the longest time. i always liked the air bubble ones. i had real bad heal spurs or something from wearing airwalks/etnies/E's/DC's. they just didnt have shit for support.
nowdays all i wear are Docs. infact i just got a new pair like 2 days ago. granted they are generally over $100. i still have and wear every pair ive ever bought. thats the difference. for dicking around though, i have an old ass pair of adidas, and a pair of pumas. the traditional ones. i dont know what they're called, but they say munich on the side.
i just dont know how people can wear the modern skate shoes. the look soooo uncomfortable. i'd prob have to try a pair on i guess. but if they are as flat on the bottom like they used to be. i cant wear that shit. it will totally fuck up my feet.
i just got these though. i wasnt that into them, but i need some new black ones. and they were the best i could find.

Since I always get my shoes dirty(working in the garage/cars), I don't like spending $60+ on shoes.

i got a pair of schearlings years ago for like $45 on clearance. hardly wear em. im not to big of a fan of the new vulcanized shit..but i gave in sorta and got two pairs recently. only because they have more padding than most of the other vulcanized shoes and are comfy. plus most of these are like 70-80 shoes and you dont get shit. just some fabric and a shitty sole.

In AZ it's all about the amazing parks... not as much street skating here as I'd like since everything is so flat. A dude I used to skate with recently went pro... he's pretty big these days and rides for Element so I don't even see him anymore. Name is Levi Brown... check him out on youtube. I have a bunch of friends that ride for local shops and random companies. I love the skate scene here.
Best shoes for me when i was starting. Vans SANTOS. ipaths grasshoppers, 2 pairs of globes don't remember the model but where super thin , es's koston and the vans nature ones. Then i became a fruit booter haha.

Article I just found with some of me in it.
quotes,
“You have to go to new parks the first day at shut all the local kids down,” said Eric Castro when Drew Steadham and I picked him up to go skating from Alliance Skate Shop.
Castro is the Skate Team Manager for the shop during the summer months, and is generally the guy who’s always fun to have around. He carries a boom box with him to different skate spots and has been known to skateboard with a Mexican flag hanging out of his back pocket. Today he had his dyed-black hair in cornrows.

I went there with Casey Rigney, Sad, Malcom Watson and Joey Brusinki(bucky).

Haha, yeah.
I would always show up extremely early to skate by myself(or with my brother).
The set up was weird, but overall, it was pretty fun.
One of my favorite skate parks was Paramount. Skate park in Corona was pretty fun too. Just couldn't go to it often since it was over an hour away.
Drifting and skating are the same thing.

Pretty much.
Back then, I was mostly on blank decks(you can't beat $20 for a deck) and blank wheels.
I would go through one deck a month. I wasn't going to be forking out $60 for a deck just because it had someone's design on it. Same goes for wheels. The print was going go wear out anyway. That's just money down the drain.
I spent my money where it counted. Black magic grip tape, Independent trucks(lights), and Swiss bearings(black).
Stopped skating because my knees would just kill me.
Also fell 10ft down onto my shoulder, popping it out in the process. Got caught up on the edge of a bowl and fell straight down.
That wasn't fun.

I'ma have to disagree with ya'll on the discussion of Etnies, I've been wearing various models for quite some time now and I really have yet to complain. DC's make good looking shoes but I seriously question their quality.
Before I fell in love with Etnies I had me some Globes & OG ES Muska's with the very cool stash pocket that I acquired from the homie. (Thanks man.. Lol.). Etnies are by far the longest lasting skate/BMX shoe I've owned and is really the only brand I consider everytime I get new shoes. Plus, they're waaay comfy, I actually love when they finally start to wear down cuz then I get to use them as my track/driving shoes.
Thin worn down soles help me feel more. Lol

I wouldn't do too bad. My little brother(13) still skates. Got him into skateboarding when he was 4.
I borrow his board from time to time and still manage to land a few tricks. Just the basics though.
Attempted to land a 360flip, but the moment I slammed the board to the ground, it zoomed from under my feet, throwing my ass to the floor. Haha.
I might pick up another deck just for shits and giggles.

Yoshi Obayashi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrFJn2G1_Y8) was a guy that skated in Seattle through the 90's and still does to this day.
I personally only had one Yoshi sighting.
He doesnt usually film or let any of his footage out and some other weird shit.
but he is amazing.
He was busting the serio out way before muska or gershon.
I had two of his pro decks in the mid 90's
and when i saw him in 05 or 06 at a park.
He was still amazing.
He's an old asian guy with normal designer glasses, fishermans hat, windbreaker and beige kackis.
Then he starts tring 540 impossable lateflip bigspins on the bank and weird shit like that.

IMO,
That is 100% lack of style!!
There is nothing that sticks out about that guy at all.
Style means that little extra flair.
Wether its grec's laidback landings,
adrian lopez twisted up frontside style,
frankie hills crazy tuck knee landing,
Penny's perfect arc of body movement with the perfect catch while yawning during contest runs,
chet's bowl attack on backside smith,
cardiels last second carving style at whatever he's doing.
These things stick out as style.
That dude you posted is great.
But really boring to watch.

He also doesnt do anything though.
All his tricks are pretty bland looking because he lacks that flair.
Thats what makes skateboarders stick out.
That flair is the difference that makes things fun to watch.
If one in awhile he barely caught it and had to carve that shit out, it would be cool.
wow you pretty much just listed some the worst styles in skateboarding right now...
honestly
chet and cardiel are the exceptions.
LMAO!!!
funny, those four names listed below are considered some of the names that go along side of style when it comes to skateboarding.
Wether its grec's laidback landings,
adrian lopez twisted up frontside style,
frankie hills crazy tuck knee landing,
Penny's perfect arc of body movement with the perfect catch while
how long you been skateboarding?
just curious.
Im thinking you guys havent been around long enough and skated with enough of these guys to really see the bigger picture.
Also put Gershon Mosley on that list for his amazing style in miniramp.
Frankie Hill.
Dude was on Powell, and their best and biggest street charger.
Penny, really.
Penny, is the skateboarding description of style.
Lopez,
Absolutely nobody sits on a back tail, front board, or back lip on large rails like him.
He actually plants his body on it and freezes for a second. non of that rolling the windows down style, or bending you legs as your going down.
just straight lockin it.
and Greco's style completely revolutionized skateboarding.
He went bigger then anyone else in that era with the tricks he was doing, and landed em at all cost.
Made for great style.
I cant get behind a skater that doesnt look like anything.
Prolly the reason why most people dont give a shit about stevie williams.
Even skating with him in person, it was amazing, but boring.
i feel like Creager skates faster then that dude when he's warming up! lol
What do you guys think of the Gonz then?
He lands ALOT of tricks like Greco.

i agree that his tricks dont have flair but imo flair is not the ONLY thing that makes things fun to watch.
dennis sticks out because he just skates faster than almost everybody else while doing some of the craziest lines.
he skates so fast that his camera men can barely keep up with him.
EXu79beyk_c
anybody can "fake" their style to make it seem like they have style but very few can put together a line while speeding downhill on san francisco sidewalks while making it look so easy. going that fast is not easy especially on the terrain he skates and that's how dennis sticks out from the rest and the difficulty of what he does is why people enjoy watching his skating.
but i guess we just agree to disagree then.. lol

the camera guys at a dead stop when the dude lands an ollie over a gap onto a downhill, then the guy tries to catch up.
Bad example.
But I understand what your saying.
Never been real big on that whole SF scene though.
What about guys like Fred Gall for city chargers?
SF guys just remind me of Drehoble, lol.
Always hated that guys style, no matter how "gnarley" his tricks were, lol.
The guy in the second video has way more balls and style imo.
That part is fun to watch besides the headphone to the camera mic part that we have all seen 6000 times.
Late front foot shove it?
He has a really good style.
Every trick he does, he keeps his front foot out there, not moving, and just lets the board come around to it.
Thats style.
POP, put the front foot out,.....aaaand the board touches the foot, stops moving and the back foot moves onto it for the land.
taken right out of the book of Robert Gonzales, long to be understood as the best pop shove it style anywhere.
Plus the dude does some gnarly shit, like that big spin into that fucking bank.
I grew up skating in WA state, then vancouver canada and all the parks, then seattle, and finally CA.
I was sponsored for years by circa and von zipper, and skated with alot of guys that are pros.
I probably first started skating in 84 or 85.
so my opinion of style is probably going over a much broader time span that alot of you guys.
And I have watched alot of things come and go and been able to watch the trends.
i have been on a board longer then alot of guys in this thread have been alive, lol.

Weren't the only D3 shoes in the skate industry the Dave Mayhew's from Osiris. I LOVED THOSE SHOES!!! Natas looks like a kid in that. I'm used to seeing him look like an old man.

Best video ever was Zero's first video, it had Bam at an early age and also the epic leap of faith with Jamie Thomas busting to Iron Maiden's Hallowed Be Thy Name:rawk:
