ok zilvians. heres the deal. ive been laid off from my job as a union shopmen ironworker since july. unemployement isnt cutting it and i need a way to get by. so.. heres what i have to offer. ive been thinking about doing powder coating out of my garage. ill beat anyones prices. it is expensive to get started. id have to buy a bead blaster, a compressor to keep up with the bead blaster, and nice size oven, and invest in a nice powder coating kit. this isnt going to be cheap. ill be able to do parts as big as rims, valve covers, mufflers, motorcycle gas tanks, fenders, ect

if i can gather up enough ppl i will go ahead and buy everything. and if you guys know anyone getting rid or selling the items i need for a nice price please let me know. if you guys are interested let me know what you want powder coated in this thread. you can ship the parts to me and i will bake them and mail them back. or, if you live in central cali you can also just drop them off to me. so lets get started!

there was someone selling a bead blaster a few pages back in the for sale thread not sure where the location was or if it was bigg enough to fit wheels but ill look a little and see if i find it.. or maybe the guy selling it will chime in. Good luck though man sounds like a pretty good idea.

but if theirs enough ppl out their that want powder coating. and i think their is, itd be well worth it. my friends are already sending me pics of their supercharges to get powder coated lol
plus its always nice to have a hook up

^^^ thanks bro. comments like tha give me great motivation. i actually found a shop next to my buddy in fresno. its 400 a month. i have a buddy thats going to be doing fab so me and him will slpit it. 200 each. stupid cheap for a decent sized shop. so these wont be garage jobs like i said previously. so this is legit. i already have a name! rapozo's powder coating (R.P.C) i like it already

^^^^ ok we have one person! 299 more and ill get this up and running!
anything you guys need done thats 33 by 22 inches and smaller i can do. anything bigger than that i can still do but i wont be able to put it in the bead blaster and will be cooked with heaters instead of the oven. and of course i will give you guys the special zilvia discount! i will guarantee the lowest price possible.

Here is some advice you may or may want to keep in mind. Once you get all your equipment setup, do some samples to show us what you can do. Do a valve cover, wheel, misc pieces, etc. You won't get any buisness without rep. To set yourself apart from the rest, show us some rare colors or other stuff you can do.

thats a great idea. i was also thinking about doing some pieces for you guys for free. if anyone has anything that they dont mind me practicing on let me know. ill through down some crazy designs/colors. but! if its gets messed up somehow dont get mad. so dont send me anything rare or that has value to you. valve covers, bov's, oil caps, mirrors, shift knobs, ect. practice makes perfect. of course boring colors are easy. i wont have a problem with those. but i want to give you guys some wicked colors! so when your friends pop your hood and say damn? who did that for you? you can throw my name out!

You're probably gonna have to get everything setup first and do some sample pieces like others have said. I would then take those pieces to some track/drift events etc. in your area to get your name out there. Also don't limit yourself to auto parts only. You can powdercoat just about anything. Check out the EastwoodCo. PC forums, it is pretty active and the guys on there are really helpful.

01-06-2009, 04:48 PM
well its hard to say. it really all depends on how many people are interested in powder coating. i dont want to set myself up for failure in this economy. i myself think its a great idea but at the same time i have cold feet. but i really have nothing to loose. ill be selling my bike to get the business started so if worse comes to worse ill be out a cbr.

I wouldnt recommend that u wait to see who is intrested just go a head and buy everything u need then advertise no one is going to wait for u to buy everything also alot of them will flake like the group buys. U can also advertise on craigslist and find parts to powdercoat for cheap also on ebay.

good point. i posted my bike for sale on craigslist. as soon as that sells i can go ahead and get started on this. ill be calling fresno city also to get my small business license and necessary permits.

well.. even if i order everything tomorrow id be pushing it to be set up by then. if you get it powder coated let me know how much you paid so i have an idea of how much to charge in the future.

how much did they charge you to have your intake and manifold sand blasted?

jimmytango00

ok i kind of have cold feet about this idea. i really want to get it going but im nervous about how it will do with the economy and all. i do have a couple hand fulls of people that want stuff done. but thats not enough in order to survive. is their any way i can start a poll? maybe have a "im interested" and "not interested" button? that definitly give me a better idea of how many people want powder coating.

oh and to the guy that called me about doing your calipers. (i forgot your name) what color did you want? i forgot to ask.

Did you check out the forums here?

Eastwood Shop Talk - Powder Coating (http://forum.eastwoodco.com/forumdisplay.php?f=9)

You can probably get better ideas of how to go about getting started with this. I think most people start powdercoating on the side until they build up a business reputation and can then do it full time. Check on those forums and search around on there to see what all kinds of parts the guys are powdercoating. I just really doubt that you will be able to just start out from scratch doing just auto/moto parts and be able to make a living from it. You're gonna have to just go for it and bust your ass and make sure you do a good job because your reputation will make or break you in this kind of thing.

I have a quick question about powder coating an SR valve cover. I have removed it from the engine and there is a small plastic clip piece on the inside that I am afraid will melt. Have you done any SR20 valve covers and if so what did you do about this piece? I appreciate your help on this topic, I am stumped.
