I'll start with a build up:

A couple days ago I was working on my 95' S14 and when I was finished under the hood i set the Hood down, but did not latch my hood pins (The Hood is Fiberglass).

I took the Car for a quick test drive :2f2f:(forgetting the hood was not latched) and *WHAM* the hood flew up and slapped the windshield. :duh:

The hood is ruined, as it folded over the roof of the car, slapping the sunroof.

Hood has been replaced, but the sunroof only goes up/down and NOT back/forward.

The sunroof motor makes NO NOISE when operated in back/forth, only up/down, indicating to me that something is not sitting right or came off.

I have not taken the assembly apart just yet, as I have no experience with Sunroofs.

Is there a cable or something that might have popped off? With the sunroof up, I peered around with a flashlight and saw no debris or anything.

Long post, but does anyone have any experience with malfunctioning sunroofs???:ughug:

More than likely you're going to have to drop the sunroof assembly and replace the frame. There's a good blowup in the FSM of the sunroof taken apart and all the inner workings, but from experience a direct impact breaks the drive gear. You can manually open/close it with the supplied tool in the jack bag or with an allen wrench, pop the switch/light down from the headliner and you'll see a hex key fitting in the center of the motor, this is the manual drive for it in case of a power loss. Try moving it carefully, the motor has a limiter built in and won't operate if there's a load (IE damage), but you may be able to open it enough manually to visually see what's broken. I had a similar incident several years ago and was lucky to only break the wind deflector that pops up from the frame, it could be broken and jammed in the lid or something like that.

Do you get paid for this?... if not, you should :) Thanks, i'll check it out tomorrow after work. I hope it's just the wind deflector stuck in there. I did find a detailed pic/exploded view on courtesy parts.com but it just looked "Greek" to me.

I'm def not going to make that mistake again...knock on wood :) or should I say hood*

I had a CF hood that liked to fly, it came up four times on me before I finally sold it. The roof only took a hit once but I replaced the windshield each time so I feel your pain. That's why hoodpins rule, you can look out and see them clipped down before it comes up.

Yeah, I went ahead and ordered a Steel hood. It was cheaper ($250 New) through my friend at Nissan vs a carbon fiber or fibreglass hood (at least $500 for quality). So no more hood pins for me, i'll miss it though.

And surprisingly enough the windshield did not get scratched even, just a lil dent on the roof in front of the sunroof (which knocked it out of whack).
