ok currently im in this trade, the guy has a clean 89 240 fasback mods include only intrax springs and enkei wheels car has mint interior. And im going to trade my 88 supra turbo with intake and a blow off valve. I hate how the supra goes on gas so do you think its a good trade? Is there any problems i need to know on the 240's. He told me that the car needs a new timing chain.

That timing chain problem is a $1000 problem, for which the engine, a ka24e, is known for. I wouldn't do it... since your car is worth aobut $3k and that one is worth about $1k with another $1k in repairs.

His car makes this squeeling noise only when he first turns it on. then it stops. The thing is that my dad is a mech and all i would be paying for is parts. But still your right my car is valued higher.
My other friend just bought a 92 16 valve with a rattling noise in the cams like a bouncing plastic what might that be?? sorry for all the questions but i really want to get into 240's now, im tired off supras!

well since you're getting into 240's, I'll tell you the two most common problems.
1) the ever present idle fumble. The idle speed on 240s seems to change everytime you come to a stop, due to a faulty EGR/IAC
2) timing chain/timing chain guide making a rattle, is a precursor to engine disaster.

damn with supras its the head gaskets and now the 240's with the chain?? Im confused, im only 17 and i wanted a 240 for reliability and gas saver. Can someone tell me specifically why the chain issue is a disaster waitings to happen. I dont understand why it just cant be replaced.

there are several different kinds of rattle..
I would suggest reading through the FAQ.
rattle on the DOHC engines can usually be fixed by:
a. Removing the upper chains, upper guide.
c. Removing the Upper chains, lower guide
b. unsticking the lower chains tensioner. (old nasty oil gets built up on the tensioner, and causes it to stick. needs to move freely back and forth with the change in oil pressure)
If you get the chain replaced by a dealer, they will automatically remove the two guides, and replace the tensioner so that none of the above problems will ever haunt you again.
On the SOHC engines beware of Chain rattle, and leaky injectors.
The timing chain problems on the SOHC engines are a lot different than those on the dohc engines, so make sure you don't get confused.

your supra cant be that reliable though..obviously u havent blown a few headgaskets yet. i think the 240 is still more reliable. and way cooler :)

i hate to tell you this but my '91 has always sucked the gas down. This is not a car I would call a "gas saver". So I said screw it and put in a SR.:D
Good luck on your search. If you are patient, you will be rewarded w/ a s13 in good condition for anywhere from 1500-2500 w/o chain rattles

Buy a shell & drop in an SR...
Engine condition doesn't matter as long as you don't sell the daily driver too!

blah, there are a few pretty skewed views here ;) not that I can blame them.
I think I can be a lil more objective. I have 2 240's one KA, one SR, I think the KA (91, so it's DOHC) is VERY reliable. Since you're 17 and looking for reliablilty and most likey a car u can be harder on and still depend on, I think I'd pass up the SOHC you're looking at. Supras are good cars, I was looking for a mk3 like your when I got my first 240. Your supra is worth FAR more than the particular 240 you're looking at.
I'd say that if you're that interested in 240's, look for as new of one as you can get away with, personally I'd stay with 91+ Best of luck in your car search, remember to make sure your priorities are straight in your head before you buy something just cuz it looks bada$$, has all kinds of go-fast goodies. Sounds like reliability is at the top of your list, make sure it stays there, The only reason I have a SR powered 240, is cuz I have the other one for a daily driver :)

My SR is my daily driver and she doesn't give me any problems (other than routine maintence and the magical disapearing exhaust gaskets)
I do think a KA would be a better dd though. Less worries.

Be glad he changed his mind. Your car is worth more money than that 240sx. You'll do better selling your car and then buying a 240.

LOL! I'm glad I'm not the only one with the magical gaskets. I'm about to give up, and use some copper multi-layered gaskets.

thanks guys for all the advice, my decision is most likely going to be selling my supra and getting me a 91+ fastback.

Good choice... I'm giving my B13 to my sister, and my dad bought my Corolla from me... so I'm free & clear to buy an S13 240SX fastback as soon as I get to South Carolina for school for the Navy...
I've ridden in more 240's than I can count, and if they are half as fun to drive as they are to ride in... you can't go wrong!

I totally agree with that. Even with my SR, my short trips around town in the winter make my gas mileage go straight to hell. Especially with the Koyo radiator, it takes over 15 minutes just for the engine to hit 180 degrees (normal op. temp.), so it spends the entire drive "warming up"...which means it's running rich the whole time. So, these days I'm getting 15-16 mpg. Yay. On the highway, I still get 26-27, so things are peachy there. It's just the cold weather and the fact that I enjoy boost that kills my town mileage.

wow, what are people getting for mileage SR vs KA? My SR guzzles the fuel pretty good, and the KA seemed much better in this respect... of course the KA had like 75 less HP a smaller fuel pump and injectors, etc etc :/
Gotta pay to go fast :D
