Hey guys, Im currently working on a car that i plan on making my strict track car only. I Booted my KA24E a little while ago and had some fun with it pushing it pretty hard even tho it never really ran that great. So I decided to tear the motor down and see what it looks like inside. So im thinking about building the motor with all forged internals but i need advice if this is worth it. Some ppl have told me built KA SOHC are strong motors and hard to blow. Since this is gonna be a track car It would really make things easier if i had alittle bit of reliability and performance while im runing the engine so hard.

the piston walls were actually glass smooth!
http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/4610/dscn3220za0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

So does it look worth it?? everything seemed to be in pretty good condition. It just didnt look the cleanest ever..

Some one on 240sx forums said some one put a KA24ET in there S14 running about 330 + hp and still having fun with it??

i think that would be really cool to build this motor.

Let me know what you all think of this idea.

Thanks for the time

Have faith in the SOHC.

I have a KA24E, with a head prepped by Javier at JG Engine Dynamics (Full Port polish, OS Valves, Springs, retainers), I also have JE Pistons and a Jim Wolf ECU.

I though I was one of the only guys out there with a SOHC.

Just to give you a comparision, I easily spin and smoke 235/16 tires with my SOHC.

PM me if you need any insight.

do it! i jsut b0ught another sohc ka off my friend for 60.00 for the whole motor and im gonna tear that down and rebuild it to stock, then take the sohc in my car and fully build it, and turbo it. if u find any good sites for parts please lmk.

My SOHC blew a month after I drove it, only tracked it once. Of course it looked horribly taken care of by the previous owner. But it gave me a reason to do an SR swap. I'm not a fan of SOHC as much anymore because things are a little harder to get to. Took me and my buddy about 3 hours trying to replace a little hose in the shape of a U that was leaking coolant right near the underside of the throttle body and intake manifold.

I'm all for it though. I wouldn't do it myself, but it would be cool to see. I know a couple guys have some pretty nice SOHC's.

Sooo, the only place i can seem to find is a site called.

O & J Performance Home Page (http://estore.websitepros.com/1636426/StoreFront.bok)

They seem to have everything i need to do this build.

I deffinatly want to cancel the MAF and go maybe... greddy emanage ??

im probly gonna need a new wirring harness because the one that i have now is given up since the weather is so cold everything is cracked and just not in good condition at all..

That looks pretty nice.

To the OP, any engine can be made to perform. KA24Es used to be used in GT3 racing here in the US (albeit in a high-comp carbureted form which saw rebuilds very frequently) to the tune of ~300hp.

Hey, thank you for the back up i really appriciate it!! yeah ive put alotta hard work into this car because drifting is my passion even tho i havent participated in the sport long i admire it greatly. Im hoping i can start saving up again to start ordering parts. What do you suggest i order first ?? I cant afford everything at once so i plan on just getting things one by one and slowly peice the motor back together.

Thanks again

Keep track of dollar amount you're going to spend before buying anything - SRs are cheap, and much better for boosting and beating up at the track than single cam KAs.

My stock SR also spins 235's easily. And revs out decently well. And it's cheap to maintain/replace. And I can re-sell it if I have to. Those are all maybes with your rebuilt SOHC idea.

DO NOT just start buying parts with no total budget - you will regret it in 6 months, when you try to put it back together, and find you're still hundreds of $$$ short, and can't sell any of it because everyone who's graduated from SOHC knows that they're AIDS.

My good friend who I share a garage with had a very nicely built KA24E-T with everything done right and solid rom tuning, we used to work on it every weekend. I used to joke that we better start buying head gaskets at costco, like a 12 pack or something.

Now he has an SR and we beat on it every weekend.

I like the weekends so much better now.

I'll link him to this thread, he can give better insight beyond my "quality of life" comments.

Ha, true story. So much money dumped into it, and in the end, it just wasn't what I wanted. NA+T in my experience (beyond my own motor) is a finnicky beast, with lots of little shit that needs attention.

My build was very similar to fromxtor's -- built single cam, jgs manifold and whatnot. It was definitely a torquey sunnuvabitch, but power fell off up top. Obviously there's a lot of material that you can take out of the head, but headwork and a cam is even more money. I could have easily bought an SR instead of building a sohc, but I didn't. Live and learn. Do I regret it? Not at all. I learned a ton from doing it.

In the end I'm much happier with my bolt-on redtop, though. It makes less power and less torque, but it actually revs, has proven more reliable, and gets better gas mileage to boot (not that that really matters). It's also nice to be able to buy downpipes, fmic kits, etc. off the shelf without having to fabricate (I didn't buy the jgs dp stuff, just had a friend help me build my own).

I was running no fan shroud on a stock radiator. Like I said when I popped the hood it's not surprising the car was overheating as I was in stop and go traffic for about 30 minutes prior to getting to your parents house. I suppose I wouldn't have driven the car 3 hours if I was worried about it breaking down.

Like most of zilvia, it's very easy to judge people based on what you've read or what will make you a cool guy on here. You have a stock car yet you can judge other people? You and 90% of the forum with stock/non-running cars that always comment on weak fitment or other "cool guy zilvia" topics, yet don't walk the walk themselves.

Anyways, to the OP. If your motor is in good shape then you will be fine. It really boils down to budget. Don't cheap out on important stuff and the motor will last the same as any other motor.

Thank you, OP. I've also thought about doing a KA24ET. Granted, I have an advantage, my current SOHC has about 71k miles on it. It all depends on how you build it; if you're like a lot of KA-T'ers, you'll just throw a bunch of ghetto ass parts together, but if you take your time and get the right parts, it'll be a great little motor.

I guess I'm the other 10% that can safely tell you you're living on borrowed time with an old NA motor and a GT28RS? slapped on there. Oh, and taking your fan shroud out? Great idea - that's why you overheated, not because you're turbo'd.

Originality be damned, show me one person who's owned an SR and decided to SOHC-T their next car. It's just a bad plan, on any budget.

i had an sohc for years... its probably one of the least efficient motors out there, a complete dog with torque, thats it. not worth building.

the SR has so many improvements that the KA-E is not worth wasting a dime on. talk to a reputable motor shop about how much it costs to properly "build" a motor, you're looking a shitload of money. you're better off picking up a used SR and calling it a day. spend your extra time and money in better ways...

as far as motors go, i could care less what motor is in a car as long as it enables the car to drive the way a sportscar is supposed to drive.

your motor setup looks like complete trash, thats why your car is overheating.. its held together with zipties.

walking the walk doesnt mean owning a slapped together car. and upgrade that damm radiator, theres absolutely NO reason to install a turbo and skimp on something as vital such as a radiator, jesus christ.. what a mess.

I wont lie, I was a person that told TR that was a bad idea but considering the price he got the car+kit and his urge to get on the track and drive it made it awesome in my eyes. The car did pull decently, and yes it probably was a POS but someone that has stock car and then talking shit on this site and thinking they are the fucking shit doesn't get any respect from me. Especially living at home with mommy and daddy. I'm not defending the fact that SOHC-T is a bad idea but I guess arguing about it is even fucking dumber. Now lets get on the topic of boosting any KA, I bet some other dudes will get in here and defend some shit. <3

I can totally relate to that, I know that's how monstrosities like SOHC-T's happen... but we're not talking about just running it till it blows and swapping in another block (which is what a lot of SR guys do), we're trying to have a fairly high-level discussion about what's cheaper, and what will be a better finished product. S13 SR20 > *all* when it comes to value, unless you've got a mint stock motor you want to NA-T and don't want much power.

i don't have anything against the sohc

its just that you can buy a dohc for so cheap its like under 400 dollars for everything

if you're on a budget anyways why would you be turboing it

i don't have anything against you or your car (it is nice)

if it were me i would of put in a dohc first then turbo'd thats all

yes my car is STOCK, you came two weeks after i bought that car it is my fourth 240sx

Hugs all around.

That photo is from when everything was getting put together. The quality parts are there. Like I said, budget was my main concern. I boosted the car for under $700 total. I'm surprised as anyone else that it held up. The motor that was in that car was sitting in the back of a box truck for like 7 years prior to putting it into my car. I ran 15psi on a FC T3 with the stock block without any issues.

I just see so much biased hate from everyone that doesn't have first hand experience and it just weighs on my nerves.

If you want to do an sr swap go nuts, I may be doing that in my new car. If you want to boost what you have, the ka is not a bad motor in that respect either.

Hmm, So im getting lots of votes for "no go SR" i get so many mixed suggestions from ppl.

the reason i wanna build the KA is cuz ill have a built engine there for the engine will be ready to take hard beating all season.

If i were to buy a stock SR for about the same prive as the motor rebuild im getting a stock motor.

Now,, i know theres probly lots of stock Sr's out there that probly run the track all say with stock internals but im not sure how long that would last.

Like i said before, all im trying to do is work with what i got and make it by. Ive found internal parts for decent prices.

If It's drifting that your building your car for I say stick with the stock motor sohc or dohc until you have reached the point where the only thing thats holding you back is power. Invest in suspension, tires, lsd, etc......learn how to control your car well. I only say this because I have seen people (quoc ly) for one be able to hang with the big dogs with a DOHC with minor mods intake, exhaust, cams, header etc....and is now a driver for Jasper Performance. My thing is that your car should see as much track time as possible vs garage time. Drifting is pure fun and should always be that way. If you feel that you have already reached this point than ignore my post. Bottom line is that building the SOHC can be great but at the expense of downtime. I can assume that it will require lots of time, money, and energy. If you have those three things than go for it. But why have so much downtime??? I say get on the track and have FUN!!!!

Agreed, drifting is just so fun to me and it seems to be my passion. I cant get enough of it yet im stuck home with my engine sitting in the garage.

Lately ive tried drifing my MK4 supra and it was alittle tough to do but it deffinatly was fun. for my first drift i tried doing 60 MPH ha. and i tried pulling the ebrake slightly and instantly did a 180...... ( just experimenting) but all in all i felt that this is the only time im happy. in a car, working on a car, building motors.. its basicly the only time when everythings alright.

I mean, i think the KA can only get me so far. But im willing to get that far with the KA and see how it treats me after i finish it.

On the tear down it was just two friends but on the build up im taking it to a shop so everything is put in correctly and done right.

SR is better than the KA stock for stock for sure. I like how the SR feels, but if you can build a good setup the SOHC can be very good.

Take for instance my setup... Running for over 3 years, Track only. Never had an engine issue. It makes 320hp and 340ft-lbs. Not bragging at all, but I just want to show that it isn't the engines fault that people have shitty setups.

i don't have anything against you or your car (it is nice)

if it were me i would of put in a dohc first then turbo'd thats all

yes my car is STOCK, you came two weeks after i bought that car it is my fourth 240sx

and the parts ive bought since you came are sitting in my garage right now are going to stay there until the spring time

but apparently i don't walk the walk myself

and yes i live at my parents house hahahaha i goto college 4 miles down the road

i would be retarded NOT to

How come I don't get to go visit you?

:eek3:

One thing will always be true. KA's are some of the ugliest motors I have ever seen imo. An eye sore no matter how much you make it kick ass until it explodes.

That is the sickest set up ive ever seen... This deffinatly give me hope for my build. Thank you so much I really appriciate your time. and if the engine has lasted you this long this is what i need cuz i need somthing to last me while so i can worry about getting practice in and not about how much work the engine needs after a run.

Specs, if you don't mind?

The only thing that keeps me away from a KA-T build is the shitty red line... In one hand I have 6500, in the other I have an 8000+ CA. Yeah, thats right, I'm NOT putting an SR in my 240. :)

Awesome! yeah see its too common to see SRs in 240sx... Not to talk shit to any of you guys on the forums here i have mad respect for all of you.

But almost every 240sx i see at a show/event.. i see lots of 240sx for drift with sr20 and nothing else.. In my opinion drifting with a motor that takes alittle more skill to drift with is just to add to my advantage of the sport so when later on i actually get another competing car ill be able to tool it around like ive done it my whole life.

Thanks for the info guys. Ill keep you updated on when i start the build.

So i think i had 1 wote for not buy parts one by one?? i think today i have enough money to purchase the rods..

its not a matter of affording the parts. Its a matter of affording it all at once since i dont make the big bucks every check...

I am not saying that everyone should use a ka or SOHC for that matter. If you want a bolt together setup, then SR hands down. If you know how to build engines(that actually run good) and fabricate exhaust, intercooler piping, manifolds and whatever else then it really doesn't matter. Don't choose an engine that you can keep up with. If you have never built an engine or can't afford a stand-alone then I would not choose the SOHC. Sr is a simple bolt-in. I love both, I just choose the SOHC and thats all im saying. I just don't want to see another SOHC live another terrible life.

I understand exactly. I think the SR is a great, easy to use motor; but I want something different. An OEM rebuilt CA with upgraded pistons and rods, with a T28 BB would be a simple little setup and would be reliable.

Well, im currently taking a welding class so i can start to fabricate my own things and the shop close to me has a tubular bending machine. and I my self know how to build a motor its just im gonna have a real machanic keep an over over my shoulder just incase.

SleepyS14's sohc setup is what made me decide to boost my sohc. Ive been driving my car boosted for almost a year and its been running fine. Like what Sleepys14 said, I couldve bought an Sr and bolted stuff but I am a diy kind of guy.

Im currently boosting at 9psi with a turbonetics t3/t4 on a completely stock block. This spring, I plan on running 20psi...just for shits and giggles because i have a spare sohc and i know i can get more for cheap.

I have a friend who's building a SOHC.

It's definitely going to be fun when he's done. I rode in it before and it felt great. That being said, the person he got it from kinda half assed the whole thing so he blew some stuff after driving it for about a month.

I think you'll be fine though, KA-ET's are fun because they make really good torque.

Yeah when i was driving mine around it was really fun. Except the fact the injectors were stock so it was hitting fuel cut almost soon as it boosted. But the engine was getting the oil dirty and fouling the plugs sooooo fast it was getting on my nerves. I think the valve stem seals were gone cuz there was alittle oil in the turbo manifold when i took the motor out..

Henry built this car from the ground up. used the ka since it was easy to pickup motors in case he ever blew one. who knew this motor would last him the whole formula d 2008 season. Only thing to think about now, is 100mph+ drifting in a ka-t. around 380whp around 4800 rpm's. but dies to around 240 at redline. great for track days...not so good for formula d's 500-600whp competition.

My opinion...depends on your final destination. I was gonna go ka-t till I found out they max at 400whp with great mods. I know you can get rediculous 800whp out of them...but buy a SR, forge the internals, and run 14psi of boost, car will be reliable for damn near forever running 300whp.

haha or you can be a complete cheater and put a LSx motor in your 240 and you'll have infinite NA power hahahaha.

I think it'd be a great project to build a KA-T especially if you have another car to drive around and play with. (Mk4 Supra) But I'm reading alot of people saying that they're 'bored' of seeing Sr's in 240's and saying that it isn't original etc... I'd just like to make it clear that the KA COMES in the 240sx, incase everyone forgot that, so anyone that owns a 240sx at some point had a KA in it..... Unless they bought one with a swapped Sr/whatever. And personally I'd say Sr's are quite reliable, just stick with an S14/15 SR and upgrade injectors/turbo/tune/fuel pump and you could be putting down a reliable 300whp setup. If you so desired to invest some time and quality parts into it. Motors designed for boost, will always take it better.

Unless the Emanage is different for SOHC's than all other motors, it's a piggy-back. Keep a MAF, piggyback's with MAP sensors are not nearly as good as standalone's made for MAP sensors.

Glad you've already got some other things, but you realize those could all go on a SR with just a head gasket and make WAY more power, right?

Dude you need to take a step back with the "dream engine" crap. Not to intentionally burst your bubble any more, but they're a horrible choice for a drifting motor - no power (unless you spend lots of $$$ first), not any easier to work on than any other motor, narrow powerband (that's the biggest one for me - SR/RB powerband are much wider). They're cheap, that's the only plus.

Like I said, find me one person that's gone from SOHC to another engine (any engine) and likes the SOHC better.

I was under the impression that the single cam was put in that car solely for the purpose of driving it to a meet to help sell it. Not for any love of single cams.

I don't want to put words in the owners or the shop that had it's mouths but that was my understanding.
Nothing cooler than a stock KA24E with a cone filter in a Blister S14 on 19's.

Half of you guys in this forum are idiots.
Boostslidewayz wants to build up a KA24E-T.
I would rather go with the ka24de, or VQ myself but that is my preference, just as the KA24e is his prefrence.
Any way it comes down to most of you clowns don't understand the heritage behind some of the greatest racing engines of all times.
your stuck in your little wanna be drifter lifestyle's where sr's are the shit, KA's suck attitude.
Half of you guys in this forum need to get your head out of your asses.

The KA engine has been used in more US motorsports than the sr has. But then again most of you kiddies are stuck watching Initial D, or the touge challenge.

It's also been built to hold down more than 300WHP naturally aspirated.
Almost 600WHP boosted for the ka24(e)
Over 900WHP for the KA24(de)
On a naturally aspirated build the KA is cheaper than the sr.
On a boosted build sure it cost a little bit more to build up the KA. When it's all said and done though chances are it will make more power than the sr that came F.O.B.

Help this guy out with his build, have some positive things to say or get the fuck out.
In the process you are just ridiculing him when you talk down to his ideas, it makes all of you pieces of shit.

yeah yeah.... talk talk talk.

the ka24e is still a big pile of shit. i owned one WAY too long to know.

of course, put money into it and im sure you can make it a much better motor, but at what cost?

i believe its wise to research these costs before dumping money into a fucking SINGLE CAM MOTOR.

twin cam is the way to go.

How did you find that out?? I think thats sad...

I know the owner of the car (at that time) and the owner of the shop it was at. That's what the shop owner told me. LOL, it blew black clouds too, it was tired as fuck. as they tend to be.

Since I actually did all the research, spent the money, did the build, drove it for 9k miles or so, then sold it (and bought an SR), I DO have room to talk. I would just recommend going a different route. Without a lot of headwork the motor chokes off sorta quick, leaving you with a somewhat limited powerband.

Heritage means fuckall in this instance. The racing single cams were like 14:1 comp motors that lasted for 24hr between rebuilds. Yes they made huge power with sidedrafts carbs, but that's not the goal here.

Single cam turbos have also put down like 720whp, but that's not to say that any ol' motor can make that kind of power, even without figuring in the reliability aspect.

In any event, to the OP, good luck if you pursue this route. You WILL learn a lot but you will also spend some decent coin if you do it right.

I do plan on spending my money on top quality parts and having a shop help me/guide me the right way so i have a some what reliable motor. im sure 330HP wouldnt be too hard on the SOHC would it??

Im hearing almost equal amounts of oppinions about how the KA is good and bad but ive got some good info on the motor so i think i might just build it...

I plan on ordering the parts soon for the bottom end. then ill have the head ported, stage 2 cam, valve train etc. maybe even upgraded intake manifold ha. thad be cool in my eyes.

Thanks guys for all the info and opinions i greatly appriciate it and will use everything youve told me and keep it in thought when im doing the build...

thanks again

Build what you like man.
Think outside the BOX.

You can build a single cam actually cheaper than what it takes for me to get my dual cam parts. It's cheaper to build a SOHC than it is to build up an sr20.
Theres an abundance of parts from the nissan parts BIN (L28, NAPSZ) that can be modified for the KAE, not the KADE which is cheaper nd better.

the only thing I don't like about the SOHC is that it uses lifters.....Oh what a minute........Isn't that a motherfucker, the sr20det uses piece of shit lifters also...

The only shitty thing about the sohc on any realistic level is that you can't adjust valve overlaps like you can with the DOHC. Also without solid lifters it's limited to it's rev range of about 6800RPM.

Other than that you can port the living shit out of it, get mopre flow out of it than a DOHC, use larger valves and call it a day.

J40sx
01-04-2009, 08:42 PM
go for it

if more people, like yoursel,f build up the sohc for turbo,
maybe big brand names (trusted) will make more and even better parts
for the motor, as they have done for the dual cam KA's

Good news guys, I should be ordering the parts tomorrow. The bottom end parts that is..

Do you think the stock crank can handle 300+ ?? i would like to have room for more HP later on when i need it.

parts tomorrow should be:

pistons... O & J Performance KA24E/DE Pistons (http://estore.websitepros.com/1636426/Categories.bok?category=KA24E%2FDE+Pistons)

I was thinking 89.5mm 8.8 CR (http://estore.websitepros.com/1636426/Detail.bok?no=420) for the pistons ? let me know what a better C.R. should be best for my application

rods-eagle- O & J Performance Connecting Rods (http://estore.websitepros.com/1636426/Categories.bok?category=Connecting+Rods)

crank bearings- O & J Performance Engine Bearings (http://estore.websitepros.com/1636426/Categories.bok?category=Engine+Bearings)

rod bearings

and later on when i get alittle more money ill start on the top end.

im probly gonna need a new wirring harness because the one that i have now is given up since the weather is so cold everything is cracked and just not in good condition at all..

This is not the forum for these kind of questions, if you want real experiences and opinions join up here:

KA-T.org - The Home of 1000+ whp/7 sec Turbo KA's (http://www.ka-t.org) - they have a whole section dedicated to SOHC motors and contrary to all these JDM SR fan boys KA motors both DOHC and SOHC can handle power very nicely and will easily embarrass an SR.

If you get the right parts and do the most important part: TUNE THE CAR then it will be smooth, reliable and very fun to drive. Its even more fun to spank SRs and have SR owners ask you what you have done on your SR and then pop your hood to show a KA.

Yes but basicly completing the bottom end will make it so i only have to worry about that. i think its a smart move. my previous post about should i buy part by part was meaning literally only buy one piece at a time. buying the whole bottom end is making it easier on me cuz then i have a virtually complete engine.

If you want a reliable KA24e-T with a warrantee I would just buy a fully built block from HRT performance.
if you want to build it yourself you can possibly be dealing with defective parts. Besides HRT blocks come square decked as well, even compression to every cylinder!!!!
For a warranty on a boosted E engine I would trust HRT.

it all depends on you. what will make you happy and what you want. plenty of people will say that its not dual cam so its crap, or its not sr its crap, don't listen to them. if you want to do that than do it. everything has pros and cons. trust your gut more than your ears cause people will talk alot of shit. just do what will make you happy. if all else fails, you will learn something from it and than move on to something else.

Save your dollars man. You should double up your money in a month or 2 if you focus on priorities.
If you sell your bike you will reach your goals in no time flat.
Selling your bike would be enough to get the HRT long block and your turbo parts.

You could even sell your stripped block on craigs list for $150, and the bottom end parts for another $150 on craigslist.

There's nothing wrong with spending money on the fruits of another mans labor.
Buying from a reputable shop rather than you building yourself is worth every penny spent.

Don't give up on the KAE though more than likely you will smoke most SR swapped 240's that were just swapped and bone stock on boost, with a few more donkey punches for shits and giggles. Don't believe all the crap you hear in zilvia, the KA is defenitely no underdog.

Yeah you will need the L28 oil pump. It's a high volume pump for the KA24e at a fraction of the price of a TOGA high volume pump. KA's get alot of oil starvation after 5000RPM. L28 oil pump is an excellent upgrade for your KAe..

The KA24e oil pump uses a different gear to pump the oil. The ratio on the L28 is much better. Nissan should of just continued using the L28 pump for the KAE. as you can see they are infact identical.

I dont have much experiance with ordering engine internals so i asked the guy as O&J about what he thinks are good and he said ARIAS have really held some high hp and lasted aswell.. So i hope these will handle the track conditions thats about to be thrown at em.

Hey guys for my info about KA24E Performance, KA24E Motor Engine / Performance. ... but yes it is capable, but you might want to build it with forged interanls, then turbo for the power you will need. but this source i get it to an google search..

damn dude sick, i cant wait to see it when its done. keep this thing alive as a build thread. im gonna be doing this soon, only a stock rebuild first on a extra ka24e that i bought. then im gonna pull my ka24e in my car and rebuild it with performance parts and a turbo it. im hoping i can get like 300-400hp out of it. so i can stil drive my 40 around and build a bomb motor. but i gotta finish some more stuff on my car to prepare for the motor. good luck with the build :)

although they used the KA in the SCCA GT3, im pretty sure nissan didnt design it to be hi-po, hence the reason they call it the truck engine. but as far as i know, the only thing that stops me from getting an SR is the fact that my KA just wont breakdown, or overheat (knock on wood). its gotten me from CA to VA round trip on cruise control and AC, along with spirited driving in the Angeles Crest Hwy from time to time. so theres no question that its reliable, just that if your gonna go the KA route, do it right.

Greddy Emanage is worthless. I have a Motec M4 for sale at a price not too far from a Greddy Emanage. If you're serious about building this engine you'd be stupid not to buy my Motec ECU.

Ecu for a drift setup....i never knew people got different ecus for drifting. Hopefully i have the right one so I can drift....:tweak:

But seriously, chipped stanza ecu. Im going to be trying out a coil on plug setup with the chipped stanza ecu on my turboed sohc. Not to mention i can eliminate my maf and use a map sensor, tune real time, and datalog for under $100:cj:

How are you realtime tuning without a rom emulator?

I ran a u12 stanza ecu, usb consult (that might be for sale ;) ), xtronics rom emulator and used nissan datascan to run maptrace.

Definitely more than $100 for that stuff though, plus the price of the rom burner to burn a chip once a tune was more or less sorted.

Well its not "real time" but its quick, on the fly tuning. Good enough to call realtime. I was doing that with a moates ostrich a while back but now I use a new nvsram board that I built for $30 so i didnt include the ostrich in the $100, more info on eccs.hybridka.com

So I bought my ecu for $20, chipped it for $10, built my nvsram board for $30, built my consult board for $15. I use a free software that allows maptracing, etc. So i guess its less than $100.

I tune my nvsram board using my consult board....its some awesome stuff.

looks like we got some one thats not to nice here.. what i was basicly meaning was an ECU for track. by drift setup i ment the right Air/Fuel ratio, boost levels, etc.. you need to tune ecus for different track types... im sure you know this and just teaching me a lesson for my ignorance and i do thank you for your opinion.

I dont know about everyone else but I tune my ecu to keep my engine from blowing up and making power. Maybe ill buy a different sized turbo for drifting compared to drag racing but ecu tuning, its all the same.

What ecu are you going to use on the street then if you are looking for a track ecu?

The car isnt going to be a street car.. no driving on the street what so ever.. im going to be using my friends car trailer and truck to get it back and forth so thats not the issue.

Im currently looking for oppinions on ECUs for track.. i was leaning towards greddy but no positive things from anyone on them.. some one mentioned Motec ? id like to see some more reviews on this ecu and find out if thats the best choice. i know it sounds stupid but one of the main reasons im looking for an upgraded ECU is to cancel the MAF. i dont wanna deal with that at all.. so i would like to get a high end ECU soon. but inputs are needed guys and i appriciate it!!

Not on 240 KA24DE's. I think it might work if you have a frontier KA24DE block but don't quote me on that.

KA24de front covers have the oil pump installed into the cover.
KA24de's also use a different crank shaft that doesn't have a dizzy gear on it like the KAe crank shafts have.

well guys.. this car seems to be a true lost hope... i couldnt afford to have the motor machined and everything so i bought another KA24E for 300 put it in along with the turbo kit and it has a bad knocking sound... unfortunatly im about out of money now.. the car is most likely gonna sit for awhile now. heres some photos on how far she got.

http://i590.photobucket.com/albums/ss342/CustomGundam/Picture087.jpg

basicly ... this motor before i put it in i installed lightened flywheel, stage 2 clutch, 370 cc injectors. i really had my hopes up with this one but now its just going no where.

the engine that was supposed to be rebuilt with the arais pistons and eagle rods.. the pistons skirt side will not fit.. ive emailed, called the company who sold the pistons to me multiple times and they will not return any calls and never answer.. the piston ring end of the piston fits but the skirts will not.. its like there flared or somthing.. and the rings are too big and having the gapped is expensive so idk what to do about that.

AND to add ontop of that.. there was a slight leak on the seal from the waste gate to the manifold and there was black oil coming from where the leak is.. so i believe the valve guides are leaking. and supposidly the head is freshly rebuild and only has 600 miles on it and i took the valve cover off and everything in there looks bran new.. idk what is up

*bump* hey guys i have some more photos of the parts.. i need some advice on what could be wrong ? basicly the ring side of the piston fits, the skirt side wont.. now... im hoping it might just need to have the ridge cut but i havent honed the block yet and ive had these parts sitting here since i first started this thread. so im really anxious to get this stuff in. I took a photo of the piston spec sheet and i wanna know if this stuff looks right... i cant get a hold of o and j performance. they havent returned any of my calls, emails and voicemails. wow.. that really is motivational, my build has taken 2 almost 3 years lol the car just sits.. im taking it to the machine shop to have it bored and honed then have the crank checked to see if its still good. then i will be installing the pistons maybe next weekend.. i plan on making just over that much. maybe high 200's i want it to have the internals so i have some play room with hp.. so hopfully this time the engine is ok.. i took it to the shop... and they said the rings were bad.. for some reason i never thought to check the plugs but it was like the plugs looked like they were dipped in oil lol. so that motor was a no go from the start. i guess u cant trust people these days.

Ive ordered today all the gaskets and seals and little things that are needed to assemble this motor and hopfully ill be able to drive this car. literally the years ive owned this car ive only driven it no more than 80 miles. so im hoping everything will turn out. So i got out from under the car and ran to the older block and noticed theres a metal plug that looks machine pressed in there..... Its towards the right and up from the rear main oil seal.. Thanks guys you got some nice setups.

To: driftn_silvia- i actually only have one local auto shop, other than that nissan and any other shops are over 30 miles away. I found a bolt that was alittle to thick and grinded it down and make my own dowel. and i dont think its ever gonna leak now. At the moment im waiting for my cuz to help me get the tranny back up into the car and pour some fresh oil in it and turn it over. lol this will be the 3rd set of oil in the car and it hasn't even been driven yet lol.. that dam hole..

yeah get that oil leak fixed and let it run. It needs to seat before it's going to run properly, I did a ka-t rebuild with arias pistons, eagle rods, same 89.5 bore, ran like garbage when first started, got it warm, let it cool, run it again, let it cool. It takes a few times before it'll seat the rings properly. If it doesn't improve after that then there's something else up. Also, run base crap oil, do not run anything synthetic or even half synthetic, those oils will not let the rings and bearings seat properly. Each engine builder will tell you different but average is around 700miles of break in oil before changing to good oil. Change the filter halfway and top off for safety.

Thanks for the heads up! Ive been collecting the oil filters and have like 3 sitting in my room. Ive never broken in an engine before so when i went to napa i go the cheapest oil because i know ima be changing it very often till its all broken in. so i asked them what is a good weight to break in an engine.. and they said 30 weight. not 5w 30 not 10w 30 just 30 weight. so i bought that..

It was only 3 dollars a quart so i was glad about that. Im going to fill it with the oil today .. let it soak for awhile.. ive seen on some of those auto shows about zmax and when they did that demo about how it works i really considered getting it but idk. what do you think ? waste of money ?

^ All that work and no fan shroud? You're gonna kill that motor.

I have dual 12inch electric fans pushing from the front as well, the fan is there to push some of the heat from under the hood.

Where that may be true about seating the rings, i have built two ka24e's one na and one turbo that have run perfectly on initial start up. Did you make sure to properly rotate the rings when you installed them so that the gaps are at least 60 degrees apart?

if i get some pushing fans on the rade and maybe even pulling fans on the intercooler.. would i have maybe enough room to make a duct to direct all that hot air ? the hood has the vents ontop but i dont wanna make the intercooler all flush with the engine bay i dont have fabrication skills. i was thinking about just buying sheet metal, bending it right and riviting it. but idk if i should even try it or not.

*EDIT* just was looking around down in there and i dont think theres anyway to make a duct. the radiator is so thick there already isnt much room between it and the engine. Only way to do that would be tilt the radiator back on the bottom half i believe. i hope someday ill be able to do that type of setup. i always loved the whole thing where they have the intercooler flush and rad tilted back. i think its very very efficient compared to the stock style.

Thanks, ive always had a taste for this engine ever since i bought the car.. when i would study on the car i noticed everyone was doing sr swaps but i was mainly focused on my engine. When i first drove it N-A i noticed it was pretty slow.. but i could feel it was a tough motor. Im happy wit my decision. some think its stupid but we all have our own tastes.

Is there any real reason to not use sohc vs. dohc? Is it miles, or the block, etc?

In my opinion its personal preference, i think sohc does have a lot of potential. But dohc simply have more potential, the head flow can allow for using bigger turbos with out having tremendous amounts of lag. N-A route i don't think sohc is the way to go they just feel gutless.

Agreed

Well when i was ordering the parts i first asked what there rated at. They said they have rated my pistons and rods at around 500 hp. I know i definitely dont want that much. I was hoping maybe around high 200's maybe even get to 300. My injectors are venom 370 cc so from what ive heard thats around my HP goal. I have a 255 lph fuel pump to supply the fuel. And i was actually considering running VP. I remember running that stuff in my dirt bike and wow it made a difference lol, and it smells absolutely amazing. Torque wise i truely am not sure what to expect.

Im sorry to say BoostSlideWayz, but those 370's arent going to net you the high 200's or low 300's you want. I would recommend at least 550's if that's your goals. But if your looking for injectors on the cheap i think Rx7s have 450cc (???) ones you can use. And if not STI injectors are cheap 550cc ones. There is some in the classifieds right now just fyi.

I tried Rx7 injectors once on that thing, before i build the motor and there low impedance witch means you have to have sometime of amplifier to make them work. When i put them in there last time the engine wouldnt even start because i didnt have that amplifier or what ever it was.

From What i read there rated around 260 hp max. Witch is fine with me for now. Even the stock injectors and stock motor last time when i first drove it was satisfying to me. So im sure mid 200's will definitely make me happy for now.

These might be my next set of injectors. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DeatschWerks-450cc-Fuel-Injectors-240SX-KA24E-SOHC-/360324671312?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item53e5062750#ht_4131wt_939

I ran 460s in my sohc-t from an rx7. Plug and play, no resistors or anything. They were the square-plug version, just have to take a razor blade and cut the little plastic key off since it's offset differently than the sohc plug.

*UPDATE* Not the best news lol. Started the car.... doesn't idle but revs nice and quick.. Does run rich but i don't have an SAFC at the moment. So today i took it around the block for the first time and it pulled pretty hard. But since its running rich i know its not going as strong as it could. I then pulled it in thinking it was my timing but got my timing light and its spot on. so Now im messing with the fuel pressure regulator till i can feel it rev out clean. But then i noticed oil pressure started to drop. So outta no where my mom is like ( is it still leaking ? ) and i look under the car and alot of oil was poured out... It was kind of fast dripping, So I figure my plug idea did not work. The car seems to be running but now that oil leak is my main problem once again.

*EDIT* another update guys... filled it with more oil and drove it around the block again ... kept my foot on the gas ust a little to keep it running and had my cuz look for a leak and he couldnt find anything... so i looked under the car again and noticed it was dripping from the same spot as it did before... It turns out the turbo oil feed line is bad. Awhile ago it arched on the starters positive bolt but it didnt look damaged so i just wrapped that area in electric tape.. So i looked and saw oil dripping from the tape.. and when it started it would leak faster. So im going to order that monday. and i really need to get a better boost controller. I have this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Universal-Tubro-Boost-Controller-BK-240SX-GTR-Supra-MR2-/250740366498?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a614a5ca2 lol so right now i had it running on the waste gate. So ill be getting something better.

Also, When i originally got the turbo kit from cx racing i remember calling them and telling them about the top nipple not fitting on cuz the shock tower in the way. they said you only need the side one on. Is this true ?

thanks guys

Inspiration to get yours finished. I am not an expert but if you need any help you can pm me.

Ive got some questions for you guys and others ... I noticed you guys have some type of sensor before the MAF ? i noticed before my maf i have nothing in there... i do have 2 wires that are just out in the open around where that would go.. what is it ? i think it may be why my car is running rough.

This may give you an idea of what im talking about.. When i purchased my turbo kit it came with a cold air intake pipe.. This pipe bolts on after the maf and then goes down basically behind the front bumper. I never put it on because ive never wanted cold air intake. But i always noticed this hole for something that screws in.

http://i590.photobucket.com/albums/ss342/CustomGundam/DSCN5967.jpg I would imagine what ever it is that goes into here must have some sort of relation to air fuel ratio ? My car runs rich really fast so i do believe im going to need to get safc and get this things a/f correctly tuned.

and a pic of what connects into it but idk what exactly it is.. http://s1.promotionsupplies.com/ebay/etdmotors/images/intercooler_kit/ETDAU-Kit-S13-KA24E+IC0048-275-2.jpg

*EDIT* ok guys ordered SAFC II basically comes slightly used but comes with the paper work and original box and the screen protective film still on the screen. so when that comes in ill let you know. I am slightly intimidated by wiring, and hoping i do it right. Im hoping the ECU's are generally universal when it tells you witch wire goes to what color.

so hope everyone has a merry christmas!

*Edit again* Ok christmas present came in today

http://i590.photobucket.com/albums/ss342/CustomGundam/Picture006.jpg

http://i590.photobucket.com/albums/ss342/CustomGundam/Picture004.jpg

Wow.. it really looked bran new besides a few wear marks on the box... the unit it self is perfect and the mounting hardware that comes with it is untouched... everything looks as if it wasn't even messed with... the wires aren't even messed with... 280 bucks for everything ... usually for this you would be like 399 or something .. and the paper work doesnt look like its been opened up.

Im happy =3

Ok guys, wired my safc in got it running. But i'm scared to drive it because on cold start up it purrs but when it gets warm it drops straight down to lean and i don't wanna put a load on the car when its all the way lean. I'm assuming is my timing because i've messed with the settings on the safc and it doesn't even slightly move it from lean. So i'm guessing my timing is maybe really off or something. then i had my cousin turn the distributor slightly retard and it wouldn't hold idle but it started to move the needle just a hair back towards optimal. Any ideas guys ? or do i just need a professional tuner ?

Maybe i just really need to get that z32 maf.....:duh:

I have some updates on the s13 !

I know its been awhile and i havent had any updates for quite some time.

Ive installed an Innovate wideband MTX-L into the car and figured out some more issues and addressed them. The car is drive able how ever its still running pretty rich right now. But i think i just need to make some more adjustments on the SAFC II and ill get it running better.. untill then this is the current condition of how the car drives.

Its idling at about 10.5 11 A/F and about 13-14 around there when under load. and im running about 13-15 psi range comfortably with out experiencing any fuel cut.

S13 KA First Real Drive. - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UvroODCnF0)

The mic on my camera has a very low quality at a certain DB level so it sounds staticy when close.. so its not running as good as id like but when its under load it actually drives nice and has alot of torque and very fun.. just no good when i let off the gas and come to idle again..

Also in this video the distributor bolt wasnt tighten so it was slowly twisting to the retarded position more and more as i was driving so it was running worse in this video than it did before we recorded it.

***NOTE*** The driving in this video was NOT illegal at all as these are private roads i live on.

looks good man. what settings do you have on your safc?

Im actually constantly having to adjust things on it so its rarely ever the same.

However mainly i noticed the settings that make the largest difference are the "dec.air " settings. Mine right now i believe are Ne1 is about 3.5 Ne2 is like 4 or something. The funny thing is i was actually messing with it today. I just have a very forgetful mind.

For the most part the car under load is fun to drive, but i always spend more time on just getting the idle to be decent and have a not so rich setting.

This video was the other day. I was happy with it, but it was still technically too rich. So i was messing with more stuff today and it was more rough at idle since ive made those adjustments.

Anyways heres how it was running the other day. KA24E-T Start Up - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVuRNpMAdJY)

So i discovered the whole problem just this week, since my last update I've not been working on the car.

The other day i started the car up and the usual screwy af ratio not being stable problem. I pin pointed that my maf was the main problem. Back when i first bought the car it had a DOHC MAF on it and i had purchased a SOHC maf along with the connector. Forsome reason the connector at the time had two ground wires which i assumed one of them was for the chassis ground.

All this time i just thought it was supposed to be that way, and after about a year of going to school for electrical engineering and getting an idea of how electronics work i brainstormed and decided to take the connector off and the shielding around it and noticed the second black wire was not oem. someone had actually put the black wire on the middle pin.

This was causing the maf to read 100 % airflow at all times, even at idle which inturn was causing the ecu to dump as much fuel as possible. After rewiring the connector, its no longer reading 100% air flow at idle. More like 4.5 or so, and the af ratio fluctuates between 14.00 and 15.00 at idle which isnt bad considering what i used to have to deal with back in the day. It would run rich in the 11.00 and 10.00 area no matter how much i tried to adjust. Now that the maf is correctly sending info the car runs ALOT better.

Now its officially just a matter of making the small adjustments to make it run better. With my limited engine management i dont have a broad capability of tuning but i definitely have a better tune already.

Soon as i can get the file of the video i recorded of it running ill post it. At this time right now for some reason my computer is not syncing with my phone to transfer the video.

I know this thread is dead but i uploaded this today even though this was a couple months ago. Doesn't run the greatest but a hell of alot better than awhile ago. Just going to pretty much leave it as is. Regardless of how much everyone seems to hate the safc II. Just have to adjust it once and awhile till your dialed in for the day.
