View Full Version : Cusco 2 way problem

So I picked up a used cusco 2 way w/ output shafts.

Took apart my open diff, installed the 2 way. Everything went nicely and sat properly.

Then I went to put the output shafts in, and realized that the two I got w/ the cusco were not labeled. After careful comparison, they looked to be identical - so I went ahead and put them in.

Unfortunately They don't appear to sit at the same depth into the lsd and additionally, I can't push them further in or even pull them out. They just seem to be stuck in there now. The diff turns and everything properly but the output shafts won't go in or come out...

Do the bearing caps have to be removed to pull the output shafts? I tried both ways w/ the bearing cap and w/o and it won't budge...

here are pics:

Does anyone know if this is normal? Or did I do something wrong?

To me it seems like everything is normal, I ran two different welded diff's (two because one broke) And I've found that one held the shafts loosely (due to it being old most likely) And the newer one held them much tighter and needed a good smack with a hammer to knock them out. Perhaps the two way just holds onto them much better than a worn out stock diff would and they need some more persuasion to remove them. But if they don't push in or pull out then I'd say you're good to go, especially if everything moves smoothly and operates properly.

How old is the diff?

I had one of the old kaaz 2 ways and it req two left vlsd input shafts in order to work.

If the two shafts are the same size/length then you should be fine.

You might have to just tap it in with a mallet and a piece of wood.

I wouldnt run it with out it seating completely because it will prob come out and then you will be stuck.

I seriously doubt this. Where did you get this information from? IIRC Tomei LSD is made by kaaz not cusco.

also just try calling cusco and asking them.

Call Nukabe... Brad and Chad are great guys and will do alot to help.

Cusco is made by Cusco Japan.

What LSD did you buy... it sounds like the MZ... the RS is designed for the Open diff and you wouldn't have needed to replace the shafts.

Kaaz makes alot of Diffs for other copmpanies... Japan is very cool about label swapping. (ex: Section = Tanabe Drift Spec, URAS, Kazama... just different color)

the bearing caps don't need to be removed to install or remove output shafts

if you put them in on the wrong side it will be harder to move them, take a hammer or rubber mallet. hit the little flanges on the output, but alternate on them to bring the output shaft out evenly.

did you count the splines on the output shafts? that may be the difference, usually they are similar in height.
