Hey guys - this may not be new to any of you, but I feel its important to contribute to the site and tonight's job was to neatly assemble my wiring harness for my Alpine deck in the S14. The one that was in there before for the Panasonic was done with electrical tape. If you think this is fine, please read on.

The tools you need - Wire cutters, wire strippers, soldering iron, solder, heat shrink tube, lighter.

And Very important - FLUX - needed for clean and strong connections.

All of these tools are available at your local hardware store - rona, home depot, even the source.

One by one, take your time. No rush! I spent 2 hours on this at half speed.

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n260/daveowen/240sx%20S14/DSC02477.jpg
Thank you flux! Excellent, strong connection

More progress is made.

Old harness cut off - I was using it as a guide for some of the wiring code.

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n260/daveowen/240sx%20S14/DSC02480.jpg
Almost done soldering and heat shrinking

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n260/daveowen/240sx%20S14/DSC02481.jpg
4 solid connections - no need to strip a tonne of wire, half a cm to a cm is fine, but make sure the solder is in contact with all of the wires (this is what flux really helps with)

The tedious part is done. Start cleaning up the harness.

Fresh and clean

In the back of the deck. So easy to work with.

Another angle

Much more manageble

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n260/daveowen/240sx%20S14/DSC02489.jpg
And we have power! Great success!

Mocked up.

I plan on finishing the install off in the morning - to tired for now. I feel as though taking the proper time to do a job, however small it may be, is always worth it in the end.

Cheers,

Dave

That's the ugliest fucking harness ever for doing such a clean soldering job.

And I'm sick to my stomach seeing a jank ass plastic dash kit when the OE brackets and pocket are a way cleaner look.

Yea, Om1kron's harness is nice. I gotta get one of those "extra hands".

Plumbing Flux? Most electrical solder is flux core.
Why didn't you shorten the lengths to equal?
Why aren't you using the harness ground?

There is no harness ground in the Schassis, or in many Nissans. The ground is supplied through the radio's case (useless here with a plastic dash kit). You can also receive a ground through the antenna cable but it's weak and usually picks up noise. Grounding to the chassis in this case is the kid's only option.

I like how you talk about not doing a half assed job with electrical tape, but then you use a lighter on the heat shrink instead of a heat gun. :ddog:

You really should have cut them to proper length, too.

That's exactly what I was going to say - OE brackets look and function SO much better, and make the radio truly difficult to steal.

Srsly, I saw that and was like, what never heard of flux-core? Flux core works great for microminiature stuff, as long as you keep the tip of the iron clean. Oh, and using a "gun-type" instead of a "pen-type" is borderline dangerous for those 18ga connections... you don't need 60w or whatever that gun's lowest setting is.

Om1kron did a fantastic job explaining these processes in his buildup thread, even did an animated .gif lol.

there will always be second guessers. steal the ideas and start another write up that incorporates the ideas you stole
