Anyone? got a few laps at apex raceway in one of their rentals.... Seriously makes me wanna say fuck real cars its a waste of time lol.

Im goin thru craigslist looking at chassis. I would seriously ditch my car to get a cheap car/truck and karting gear , esp since I live near a track now.

p.s. this thread probably wont get as much attention as a ubber cooltrendy drift thread =(

Why not race a bike? You're right about cars being a waste of time though.

Why do you say racing real cars is a waste of time

Cars themselves. Dude, we drive 240's or similar, we don't have money obviously. Racing takes a lot of money, especially cars, as well as being started at a very young age. Driving around a 240 with a dream of being a race car driver for a living is a fallacy. Eventually you'll figure out that you wasted a lot of money... and especially time... messing around with cars. Sure, they are cool at the time... but they are taking you nowhere great in life. Spend your time and money doing something that will benefit your future, like school, and when you're older you can waste money throwing it at cars and having fun with them.

Not everyone who races does it for the sake to be competitive.
Some just do it as a casual hobby.

I've never done karting myself, but would like to try. The initial costs might be intimidating though. You have to get a cart, someplace to store it, and some way to move it back and forth. I'd just imagine it to be even more expensive and impractical than tracking what you already own. Don't know how the cost of consumables like tires, pads, and other stuff add up either, although I'd imagine it might not come cheap.

If you're cheapskate and/or broke-ass like me, just autoX your daily and be done with it.

Racing doesn't imply casual hobby, you race to win even if you can't admit it to youself that that's at least part of the reason you're there. Track days are another story.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about modding out regular cars though.

ill sell you one. if thats what you want. lol and what track do you live by?

HyperTek

i see old guys at the track lol

sorry i dont mean to diss real cars, you just see alot of guys grow old and didnt really accomplish anything with their street production cars... Seems you can only get soo far with a production car. Most of the success comes from people starting young, yes typically if your from a wealthy family who would buy their little kid a kart. Some didnt get that chance.

anyways, seems like it would be a nice hobby and something to look forward to. Probably more affordable than building a race car, and just as competitive/competition out there.

May be old, but it could always open up the doors for your child if old dad has a kart laying around or experience/actively racing.

I live by Apex

i always wanted to race karts when i was a kid, i had a cheap homemade one that me and my dad built.
but there was defiantly not enough money to get a good kart and race at a track, hopefully when i have a kid i can provide with something like that something i couldn't do.

and what do you know maybe I'll raise the next shumager

i race 80cc shifter karts. it is the most fun anyone can have for the money. track days are $20 to $30. races are under $100 for entry fee and you get to go out with ten or more other guys at 90mph and find out who is who. that is on a sprint track, you can also go to full tracks and my kart will go 125mph at infineon full track. in nor cal i have four tracks with in one hour driving and twelve or more with in six hours.

what part of CA do you live in ?

HyperTek

socal inland empire.. close to adams kart track and apex, and i read they have a track at cali speedway
and moran raceway is suppose to be pretty close to me as well

Once when i was a little kid i told my dad i hated him for not having enough money to let me race carts, because now its impossible for me to be a pro racecar driver.

HyperTek
12-30-2008, 08:36 PM
haha wow

i kinda looked back at that myself, my pops funded rc cars for me and took me to as many races possible to compete in.. If we known more about karts back then and my dad wasnt with stupid ass women, i think he would have funded a kart for me had he known there was tracks near us.. I dont think we knew about rental karts back then, that probably woulda been enough to stir up interests.

hyper im with you on this one i think to myself all the time i got to get out of this car shit cuz of the $$$$$$$$$

my buddy just got a fucking mint 80cc shifter kart for 2 grand and say another grand for extras.

so i would say 3 grand and your ready to rock and tires last alot longer and yes fees are $20-30 not $110

but then you cant be a cool drifter anymore:cj:

tires and motor rebuilds are the most expensive part . i have to buy new tires for every race , so there goes $200 and my top end has to be rebuilt every three hours , so there goes another $100 . but you can pull seven or eight lateral g's in a sticky tire kart , and accelerate fron 0-60 in less then three seconds .

i would love to race cars with other people , but its just too expensive .

I have a 100cc yahmaha race kart I built last year, havnt had the chance to actually race it yet. Just taken it around the streets acouple times. 20hp, 15000rpm's and around 270lbs total weight with me in it, lets just say it'll beat my s13.

Racing these things isnt cheap, with a 2 stroke you only get a couple races out of a topend rebuild and a few more for bottom end. Tires arnt cheap and general maintence and parts are expensive. I'm torn between racing it next season or putting the money into my car....

True. Thanks for clarifying the difference between the two. I'd imagine competitive racing is never cheap.
perhaps the most frugal would be autoXing some sort of stock class, but even that has it's costs.

Damn. I didn't realize racing was that strenuous on the engine. I thought you could get about 40k out of an engine before having to rebuild.

you do realize that you are taking a motor that is eight hundredths of one litre , that origionally makes ten horse power and making it pump out fifty horse power . also the stock motor only revs to ten or eleven thousand rpm , and we are making them rev to fourteen thousand rpm . the shit is bound to wear out quick .

Anybody who starts racing with the idea of becoming a professional driver, even if they are 8, has no grasp on reality. You don't race to make money, you race to waste money and have fun. I grew up at the racetrack at SCCA events with my dad. Some of the best stories and memories that I have come from there. It is not a waste of money if you truly enjoy it. Obviously school and whatnot must come first though. Also of course winning is the point, but you can race SCCA and win races without being a professional driver. There are some classes that you can race in that will not send you into bankruptcy as well, and those are often the most competitive classes and the most fun to both compete in and build a car for. The lower cost classes are heavily restricted, so you have to get creative with the car to gain an advantage, which is very rewarding. Also the cars are very closely matched, so you have to drive your ass off to finish well, which is also very rewarding. Racing is for fun, it is ONLY a waste of money if you are not having fun.

And I agree with Racepar its not a waste if you love it

Every two stroke I have ever rode fucking loved to be revved.

Most even ran worse if you weren't constantly bouncing it off the limiter.

I race at Fontana every month or so. Los Angeles Kart Club (http://www.lakc.org)

125cc 2008 Rotax is my setup. Going back to the basics..

One drift event= 3-4 karting events.

Anyone trying to be competitive in racing, I highly recommend getting a kart to ride.

Buy a TAG and get prepared for an ass whipping. You'll be around $300-400 a weekend depending on how competitive you wanna be and how much shit you will break/crash into.

Why do you have to make such a remark in every thread?
It's either belittling "typical" drift cars, or something about a media conspiracy against Asian people, and white guys dating Asian girls.
Usually it just ruins your post for me.

I bought a lightly used CRG with a stock 125cc Honda shifter kart with a few spare parts, stand and race suit for a tad over $3k. Really fast and tonnns of fun.

And it is much more economical than having a "track" car. Kart track days are like $40 (compared to $100+ for a car), and the kart tracks are way closer to me than WSIR or Buttonwillow. Even if I had to buy a pos truck for like $1500, I'd still be under $5k (which I think is the minimum initial cost of having a fun and reliable track car).
