View Full Version : vinyl wrapped drift cars
When my car runs i'm going to wrap it in lue of a real paint since I don't have money for the kit i really want to put together or the paint id want on it. How hard is it to do?

I thought wrapping cars in vinyl cost just as much, if not more, than painting it.

Correct. With vinyl, you're lucky if it lasts ten years. If paint only lasts ten years, you did it wrong.
well the vinyl i want is ~$44 a roll thats 2 feet x 30, 2 of those should be more than plenty to wrap a car multiple times...all i really need is a heat gun

What brand is it?
And you're going to need wider than 24" vinyl, unless you want seams all over it. Most rolls are 150 feet, not 30.

Im doing the same with the cheap vynal off ebay.
I already have dibs on the cherry red flake stuff fuckers.
Im gonna live with seems.
but I think it will be ok since its a drift car with full over fenders.
When I had paint, and would hit cars during tandem, or have cones and driveways break my aero, I couldnt get it to look decent, even with paint.
So I figure vinyl on a drift car is the better, cheaper way to go.
No paint matching when i fix stuff, or buy a new bumper.
So how hard is it?
I heard something about soap and water and heat guns?? Im more concerned about the curves in the front aero.
And might as well do the dash and center consile while im at it :)
with the paint

See, its ok. But I think vinyl would have looked a little cleaner as things fell apart. I could just go over stuff with the vinyl.

I dont need a shell.
I live in an apartment in Hollywood.
Cant even change spark plugs at my place. lol
Plus its gonna be specifically for drifting when i get a daily.
fucking drift missle.
I already dont worry about tapping other cars while running tandem.
the frame is fine. the dent on the drivers door is almost all the way out and overfendered.
all new aero.
No reason for a shell, its just gonna get beat too.
I dont know what "drifting in america" means??
I see so many cars worse than mine on the Japanese drift videos.

I'm officially against this.
I'm all for cheap drift cars and such but, vinyl looks like ass and costs just as much as painting it yourself or having an experienced friend do it.
You're going to blow all that money on aero but you can't afford some paint?

You're going to blow all that money on aero but you can't afford some paint?
Seriously, this is what I was thinking. That kit is like what, 6 grand? Paint it. Don't be stupid. The vinyl won't made a difference if you slam into a wall.
ericcastro
12-25-2008, 04:59 PM
All the Aero was free through a sponsor.
front and rear over fenders, side skirts, front and rear bumper.
I dont wanna have to paint match a fender and a front bumper and hood everytime I have a crash while drifting.
i will have the vinyl at home, and be able to put it on the replacement part, walk outside and ziptie it on.
To me it just makes sense.
Getting a single stage paint job is better than vinyl for looks. But no one is closer than 50' while Im drifting anyways.
For me, it just seems cost effective for my purposes.
This car probably wont be around in 2 years. Its gonna be in a wall or into another car at some point.
I dont plan on it, but the reality of trying to push things to the next level make this a real possability.
i watched alot of guys I have drifted with go into the wall at the redbull longbeach, and thats the compitition level i wanna be at in the next 2 years. So the probability of crashing is definatly there.

44 for 24" by 10 yards is gonna get you like level 2 (out of 4) vinyl. It should work fine for a few years. We've lettered trailers with cheaper Oracal vinyl and it's lasted longer (on corners and the sort) than some better quality stuff.

I might get a kouki wing, or a wangan wing if i can find one... but still the aero i have is cheap so thats why i'm ok with vinyl wrapping it at maybe 200 bucks at most... vs spending 1k on a paint job or looking super shitty with a rattle can... though i might paint it like my old s14 rattle can gun metal metalic and just wet sand buff and clear.. but still thats more than 200 bucks and prolly alot more labor

I just don't like it when "finished" cars with quality aero are vinyl'd. Well, really it doesn't matter to me but this is a place for opinions so whatever.

tommy painted his shit, mattycakes had his our friends at secret shop parts max do their deal cuz their all in westslide connection. they spent decent change on paint. my car is aspin white pearl.. and the aero i have on is rattle canned and i did a really fucking good job, but it's not pearl and you can tell. when i rattled my last car i spent like 80 bucks. I'm looking at this vinyl and its about the same with better results. If i rattle can my car again, I'm going to do like 3-4 coats and wet sand it, and then clear it... thats going to cost me way more than vinyl wrap... ehh but who knows how i'll feel when my car runs i might just change my mind, I'm not dead set on wrapping the car, I'm just toying with the idea I am fond of.

I guess I didn't make it clear, I am doing a vq35de swap into my s14.3 and its going to be running very soon. I had a rattle can s14 before and it was all right, i've been looking at these glittery vinyl wrapped s13's and I figured it coudn't be more expensive than rattle can and I like the way it looks more than a rattle can. The rocket bunny flares are kind of expensive, they are only like $600 if you order them in japan, and maybe another 200 for shipping, WAY FUCKING CHEAPER than the deal the guy wanted in the adverts he wanted like 1200 + shipping to you fuck that. I also just shot my first feature film last month.
Things are turning around. I have extremely high goals in life, so I have to do the struggling part as well.
things are working out.
With only 2 years of drifting I have gotten a sponsor that just hooked me up with a couple grand in body kit, have other people talking to me about possably trying to get my FD license and driving there shop car, work as a instructor, tried the Nopi qualifyer in AZ, been on Irwindale twice, meeting others in the industry.
Its a little more than a hobby.
i would like to be somewhat like Paul Newman one day.
And the film industry can provide me the $ to pursue photography and drifting.
So I hope its ok that i choose to vinyl my car and pay some people back the money they have lent me in the belief and support of my dream.
That few hundred bucks makes a big deal while SAG tries and figures out if they wanna strike.
Thank god that everyone that didn't have complete means to chase a dream didn't give up.

I think you need to give the people on the net the benifit of the doubt. Cause if you dont know them, your just making assumptions.
I am sure if SoapGun knew me, he would hold a different opinion.
Its OK, I still love him though, cause I read his BLOG while naked on my computer listening to some creed with some candles lit, followed by standing in front of the mirror and tucking it back, then looking on craigslist for a good deal on a van.

'Yeah! I used to give people the benefit of the doudt. But it just pisses me off when an enthusiest/real drifter/driver has plans to build their car up to how they want it but some douch bag has nothing negative to say about their project and tries telling them how to build their car! Even though that said douch bag drives a bone stock 240sx and has never driven in an event in their lives!
Anywho for those who were interested here is the link on where to buy the vinyl. You dont have to do the sparkly bass boat stuff but it hides the seams the best. I used 2 quanity 24inch x 30 feet rolls to do my car
eBay Store - Paper Street Plastics: Diamond Plate, Roland Gerber Cutter, Mini Diamond Plate Holographic (http://stores.ebay.com/Paper-Street-Plastics)
i did mine inside at night after work doing a body panel at a time. Dont be afraid to use small pieces just place them so the seams are hidden by your cars body lines. I also applied my vinyl dry instead of using soap and water. The reason for this is my doors are the only oem panels made of metal and the vinyl wont stick to the fiberglas very well when doing it wet.
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd107/rps13drift/100_1264.jpg
There is NO visible seams and wrinkles the way i did mine and if you happen to have some bubbles lightly go over it with a heat gun and it should come out. I know alot of people are hating on this method of coloring your car but i get compliments all the time on my cars color and poeple honestly look at me like im a retard when i tell them its not paint but a big sticker.

yeah mine was difficult to do in pieces bigger then 8"x30" becuase its a metallic instead of sparkle so it doesn't stretch or flex at all so the slightest curved surface made it it catch a run or wrinkle.
I've been considering doing the whole thing in the metallic blue. since now I know how it lays down.

rps13drift how did you do the front bumper? did it take a few hours? I suppose you cut alot of pieces according to the curves?
Yeah its a bunch of small shapes that actualy all meet at a seem or curve in the bumper. And suprisingly the rear bumper was the hardest panel because of the wide curves and the lack of body lines.
I dont have any extreme close up pics but heres a few of the car closer up:hs:
Heres a good shot from when i first started the vinyl thing like 2 years ago when i was in the process. You can see on the front bumper what body lines i followed to keep it from wrinkling and looking shitty

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd107/rps13drift/Picture008.jpg
see i figured that since the vinyl is really stretchable i would be able to do one panel at a time and have all the seems meet at the body lines. or like on the skirts have them wrap behind it too.

i wouldnt say it looks like terrible shit! It looks better than a spray bomb/primer job in most cases that i see at events.
My main reason for doing the vinyl was because like ericcastro i lived/built this car in my apartment complex and painting was not an option at all.
I just purchased my first house this past month so who knows? maybe i will paint the car after my fc3s project gets rolling. But my main concern is just spending $ on tires and getting alot of seat time with the car this season and just beating the shit out of it.
I would also have to say in my opinion that the only COOL thing about vinyling is its super easy to repair if you destroy a panel at the track. Also that its not a perminent means of coloring your car. I could have my vert white again in 1/2 hour just by peeling it off and wiping it clean with prepsol.

So back on track.
How do I do the small curves on the front bumper??
And then how bout the large curves on the rear bumper??
How stretchable is it?
i dont want a bunch of tiny pieces on the front bumper. But If i do have to do that on an area, do the small pieces peel off fast?
What happens after a couple washes?? stays sticky? gets all scratched??
thanks to those of those helping in this thread.
for those of you that are dropping opinions, we know, we dont care, take it elsewere.
you have to do a bunch of tiny pieces to do a bumpers.
if its chrome or sparkle it wont stretch at all. You have to use small pieces or you'll get a shit ton of runs.
as long as all the endges are down flat it wont come off eay and it actually is stupid easy to clean, a very light soap and water spray and its blingin again.
and for smoothing out use a flexible piece of plastic wrapped in a small towel or rag.
and dont use soap/water. it'll never stick right. and once your done sit it out in the sunniest spot you can find. a bunch of the bubbles will shrink away slowly, but dont try and speed it up by using a heat gun.

The sparkle stuff cracks after it constricts because it doesnt stretch. If you plan on keeping the car outside i'd advise against it. I had the midnight black on a couple of pieces on my old car and the top facing surfaces got worked pretty hard over a summer.
-if you're going to use soapy water to apply, dont use too much or else it will never dry and stick
-do NOT use a heat gun
-try to keep seams as low on the car as possible
all the vinyl101 vids on youtube they all use a heat gun or a torch to heat up the vinyl and a sock/towl/soft fabric glove to gently push and stretch the vinyl.
they also said that you should use a few (5-10 drops) drops of soap in a regular i think 1ltr spray bottle but it might be different for advert vinyl and sign vinyl i dont know.
I really created this thread so the few people that have done in could share the info. I really wasn't interested in the opinion part. I also just thought about putting this in premi section but I was more interested in sharing information

This thread is great.
People stating that they, "started" a color and how people bite them.
But I will say, last year the color of choice wasn't blue, it was ferrari red and white wheels.
Why is everyone acting like vinyl is new?
Shits been done for ages.
Even Chmercer's car was vinyled blue and everyone shitted a brick.
What's next, people flat black vinyling their shit?
Not even ALL the vinyl in the world could help this car. No wonder why you're getting pulled over so much.

I bet you wish we had rep so you could neg rep me.
But we dont.
Cool tip of the day: The vinyls without the metallics or glitter in them will actually stretch onto a car quite nicely and look good as well. Its the actual metal (yes there is actually super thing metal) that is in the glitter and chrome style vinyls that makes it hard to apply to a cars curves.
Choose a regualar color get a good 10 yr vinyl and your set. Its really not that had. Good if you suck a painting or have no place to paint.
Helpful...maybe?

yeah, my rep was around 2000, so it would put people under for a ling time, lol.:goyou:
Yeah, that helps alot actually. I didnt understand why the metalic vinyls didnt stretch.
And yes, it says metalic, but then the ebay description said no metal flake.
Its a track car that probably wont even be here in 2 years, so Im not so worried about the long term.
And I think i don't hold the opinion about 240's that the other members do. its an expendable car that cost nothing imo.
so maybe thats why i dont care about knock off kits and vinyl. If I was gonna put the work and styling in, it would be to a Datsun 510 or old VW.

the kit i want will be like 2k all together...
but the kit i have now is cheap as fuck 200 for sides and rear and 50 for my bumper...
http://a214.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/53/l_1a2417c8122dc558ca33b66c3750beb5.jpg
this is what i'll be vinyl wrapping... when i get a good job ill get a Uras GT S13/14 kit and the rocket bunny flares... thats a good 1200 before shipping and taxes...
Please dont tell me I am the only one that thinks s13 front on s14 looks absolutely terible :barfkiss:!!!!

why don't you measure your hood, add a little extra so you don't have too little, then use your measurements with the size of the roll of vinyl you are using and voila. simple math doesn't hurt.
and Yokota where do you get the flat black vinyl? thinkin about doing my tacoma up but don't wanna ruin the factory paint let me know
