This is who shot him.
KELLER — Who is Brian Smith?
He had been a respected Utah state trooper and father. Now he is an accused killer in critical condition after a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Smith is suspected in the series of rush-hour shootings in Dallas and Garland on Monday. He is also said to have had an addiction to painkillers and he was wanted in connection with a recent drugstore holdup.
Brian Smith moved to the upscale neighborhood of Highland Creek Estates in this Fort Worth suburb last March. Not long after that, his wife and five young children joined him from Utah.
Smith's father-in-law told the Salt Lake Tribune that Smith was having a hard time making his commission and bonuses at his current job, and thus was under a lot of financial pressure.
Often when there's a tragedy, neighbors will remember the suspect as "quiet" and "a loner." But in this case, neighbors remember a warm, loving family man.
"Once his family got here, they would walk through the neighborhood," said Tracie Gates. "His little boys would have a little ishing pole, they'd go down to the pond and fish and they seemed like a aregular, everyday American family.
"
Lexie Gates enjoyed playing with Smith's toddler son. She recalled the last time she talked to Smith a few days ago.
"We saw him outside raking his yard, and he seemed really nice," Lexie said.
"He was like, 'Hey girls, what are you guys doing?' And we were like just walking home, and he said, 'Happy holidays!'"
Neighbors knew nothing of Smith's troubled past as a disgraced law enforcement officer in Utah.
"He worked in Valley Ranch, I believe, for a computer company," said neighbor Thad Baughman.
Nor did they know about the investigation that culminated this week. On Monday, Southlake police obtained an arrest warrant for Smith on charges of burglary and robbery.
But before they could arrest Smith, he is suspected of going on a shooting spree that ended with self-inflicted gunshot wounds as SWAT officers cornered him.
On Tuesday night, Smith's home was empty and dark as family members stayed by his side at a Dallas hospital. At last report, the former trooper was in critical condition and on life support.
"It's a great neighborhood, it's a very close neighborhood, and I really believe that the neighbors will just pull together and show support as much as we can for his wife and his children," Tracie Gates said.
This is him doing what he loved, YouTube - Drift Mode (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lV0lEhBGOkY)
There is a drift meet in honor of Jorge Lopez. Anyone can come and we would love it if you did. We all miss him so much.
It will be held Sat. Dec. 27 On the Corner of Jupiter and marquis, Garland TX ( yes, where the incident happened) at around 8-9 pm Followed by a cruise.
