View Full Version : How many pounds of sand bags for snow?

How many pounds of sand should I be packing in my S13 hatch the get better traction in snow and ice? Open diff and all season tires are okay for flat roads, but I can't do hills at all (without chains, anyways).
Also, how much worse will be back end swing out when slowly accelerating out of a corner? It's not too bad now.......

just drive your car you wimp.
just fill the hatch up with your purse collection, that should do the trick.
how about just dont drive in the snow.

You're going to get sideways going up a hill. Countersteer and just give it a little throttle.
There's nothing you can do to make the 240 AWESOME during winter. [I personally love the way it behaves]
Turn up the radio, tell the other drivers to pass you if they dare and relax.
Man up brother!

I just want enough traction to make it up the hills. I don't want awesome snow driving ability.
Nice to see the quality of posts on this site go down the shitter. Probably why I don't post here anymore.

Well, their answers are reflected on their driving habit. Maybe you just need to try it out to see at which level you like it the most and leave it there.

Honestly I dont know if it's possible to put enough sand in the trunk of a 240 to make it go up hills like a fwd or awd car.
This is the reason why I told you how to deal with it.
Rather than making a new thread that has been covered atleast 6 times this season why not search or go get 10 bags and toss it in the trunks and see how it feels?

dude only bag I use is unda my dick.
Get a set of snows in rear and go.
If not nothing will change it.
and as for post about purse's DUDE THAT SHIT WAS FUNNY! you gotta admit. I am kinda against shit talk via net but that one made me laugh... lol.
And dont give up, I noticed in snow the car enjoys drift mode, so just kinda drift er where... its all good, Radio Up. Check, Finger out the window. Check. 2 nd gear and up this hill we go! ye haaaaaaaaaaaw
*hit something cheap, and from the side, never head on, save the rad so you can sit in car and not freeze to death without heat.

Just try to keep momentum. My car does fine until I stop and try to get moving again.
But WTF would you get sand bags for? Are you an old lady in a pickup truck?

^Yeah if you want to go around easier. I can't believe someone from nashville is worried about sand, we just got 5" today and my car is fine, I took my 255 wide 452s off but no sand bags, just drive man. I haven't gotten stuck in 4 years of owning this car (knock on wood)

snow tires is all you need, i just got back from a 4 hour snow drift with a bunch of buddies and i didnt get stuck once. No sand in the trunk and slammed on PBM's

The best thing to do is not drive your 240 in the snow, unless it's your absolute only option. People will hit you, you'll get stuck a lot, and salt will kill your chassis.

I just drove in 2 inches of snow/slush.. did horrible. we'll reason being is i still have the RE01's (no air)...lol...just got bored and yea im not doin it again. i was on flat surface, i just let go of the clutch and it just spun tires..1hour to drive around the block...but yea i never drove my car in the snow before (owned for 3 years)..thought it should be a first..and now a last...on the RE01's atleast..

play sand comes in like 50 pound bags for about three bucks at home depot. i think the tube sand stuff comes in more solid bags, and the bags are a lot longer so they'd go the whole width. i'd just do two, maybe three.
but i've only been stuck once in my life. i parked on a really steep hill at this restaurant.... it snowed, i came out and couldn't get up the hill with the one tire fire. group of kids comes along and they all shove my car up the street without me even asking.

I use to daily through three winters, including the one where we had blizzards for three weeks straight with 2 50lb tubes of sand and winter tires and had no trouble aside from the 3-4 feet of snow on the ground.

Get snow tires, fuck sand bags.
Last winter I drove through a Canadian winter on all seasons, this winter I have blizzaks. WORLD of a difference. We just got a few feet of snow yesterday, I was plowing through banks and running circles around lots of fwd cars. Learn how to drive in the snow and with some decent tires, you should never have a problem.

back in 2002 i used to load up with four 70lb bags of tube sand.. they compensated for all-seasons. dont do that. youre rear end weight bias will have you spinning out like an old 911 whenever and where ever you lift off (like i did)
if youre cheap craigslist a pair of $50 snows for the back and topps like 120lbs of tube sand
thinner tires are better i wanted to put 185's on stocks but have 205s

Thanks for the info, ranger. I got two tubes on sand (about 50lbs each) and took my chains off and I was able to get around okay.

Well today it snowed about 2 feet before I went into work. No sandbags- or spare, and cheap all seasons & open diff.
It seemed to gain control better with little weight in the rear. I could see how extra weight in the back could cause a spin out situation.
No issues with this ice/snow storm, in fact I could get it sideways @40, retain complete control of my AOA

Wow, that's helpful
how about just dont drive in the snow.
Cause that helps him how? people gotta work/school.
ok, there's too many dumb reply's to quote them all.
if your not willing to help you shouldn't post.
Anywho.
If i were you, i would look into some Blizzack's (or other snow tires)
My girlfriend has them on her hatch, and we just got 12" of snow thursday night into friday and the car has been just fine, minus where the snow is too tall for it to go through. if nothing else. try one bag or a box of tools and see if that helps. If you still don't like the way it reacts then try another bag.
that and just take your time and keep momentum.

why dont you guys learn to drive in the snow before you venture out into the white abyss?
I could see this as a problem if you ate some spicy soup, and it came out of nowhere while on some unplowed backroads. With improper snow training you face the chance of having to either jump out of your car and dissapear into the woods, or kicking your GF out while you unleash hell, either way it means one thing;
If you need snow bags, you shouldnt be driving a 240 period.

wow, add sandbags? LOL. If your not getting traction your andyou shouldn't be on the road. I used to have eagle Goodyear gt2's on my car and didn't have traction problems. Invest in snow tires on all 4 corners, learn how to accelerate in a higher gear, more bog, less spin. Refrain from agressive down shifts. For deep snow, don't stop hard, decel slowly or you'll get stuck and accel slowly. 1st gear with no gas pedal does the trick.

Just keep your gas tank full, you'll have all the ballast you'll need. The difference between a half empty and a topped off gas tank is about 60lbs.
I do agree with Fries though, I love the way you can just get your way from point A to point B sideways all the way there.

how about check your tire psi and make sure its not over inflated and then let some air out and run on lower psi for the time being till you get some better tires.
