View Full Version : Ordering my turbo: gt3076r or gt3071r???

About to place an order for one of these. I need to know which one to get. Im keeping this thing bottom mount so it needs to fit.
gt3071r or gt3076r and also which a/r.
My goal is to exceed the 400whp range but still spool fairly quick.
Yes I do have all other supporting mods.

I have a 3071 on my ka-t set up, .82 A/R, spools nice, makes 500whp+ at 22psi. I love it. I also have another one just like it for sale on here, so I might be a bit bias. But I absolutely love these turbos, I've had them on two different set ups so far.

My S14 with Built Sr running a Top Mount 3071R produces 469 whp on 20 psi - Pump Gas

No drift, maybe drag a few times, possibly auto-x more than anything. To be honest with you, it will probably just sit at home most of the time. Looking to break the 400whp mark without it being too laggy. Its gonna be bottom mount aswell.

if you are going to autocross, out of those two choices i would pick the 3071r.
the 3076 is a lil bit more laggier.
Honestly, if it was me. I would get a gt2871r 86 trim.
lag would be minimal.

Definitely stoked, but i wanted the .63ar but the place said they didnt know when they'll get the .63ar, i know it'll be laggier but eh, we'll see how she produces.

for autox you're looking for response, not max power.
I'd go with a 2871 .64, build your motor, and tune to the 370-400hp range, especially bottom mounted.

This is only true if you upgrade the plenum.
The biggest problem I see with the tuning community in nissan world is the lack of faith in Nissan oem design in the first place.
The need or desire - like pre-programmed brain washing (fan boy attitude) to immediately upgrade the Intake Manifold to some super large plenum with short runners and then adding the smallest turbo you can to make "the best spooling responsive turbo"
The real key is to spend more time evaluating your intake side and then matching the turbine to the desired output and SHAPE of POWER CURVE you want.
Not the largest possible plenum with the largest camshafts and the smallest turbo with the "BEST SPOOL UP" or "EARLIEST POWER"
The philosophy is all backwards. Mines has a similar philosophy to me although even more time is spent doing the math on the exact camshafts to make the most of the oem equipment already in place.
If you match a GT3076R with T25 style turbine and gate with an S13 motor with stock Intak manifold and a larger throttle body and camshafts like the 260 Tomei you will probably outspool the popular and very over-used and exaggerated 2871R + Greddy IM setup that has grown to near trance like cult following with nothing to back it up other than the fact than Garretts website says it's capable of those levels (which they mean brake output btw) and a handful of cars running the turbos near the edge of the compressors efficiency have made 380-420 whp with various .64 turbine 2871R setups.
A great example of this is this car I tuned - (this issue got brought back up due to some discussion on freshalloy regarding stock IM on s13 and s14 motors).
Stock Intake Manifold
Stock Throttle body
HKS 264 Step 2 cams both sides (stay away from staggering cams unless you spend time knowing the mathematical reasoning behind it)
Straight T4 Turbo - T3 Foot Print- P Trim Turbine Wheel T4 and 50 Trim T4 Compressor wheel -
(the p trim wheel is bigger than the GT30 Wheel and the GT35R turbine wheel)
Haltech tuned by me on the Dyno Dynamics
13 psi of boost
The setup spools up to 13 psi by 3500 rpms in higher gears, torque comes on hard at 3800 rpms and peaks around 5k slowing losing about 20 by 7800
Torque is at about 280 ft lbs at peak, 260 average. HP is 338 whp-
I have driven GT2871R cars with and without camshafts but they all spool very close to the same as this setup, GT2871R cars with larger Plenums usually spool up slower and make peak torque much later.
Then there is the mistake of taking a large Intake Manifold and small turbine and huge camshafts, another total attempt by the tuner to band aid or make up for the turbines lack of potential energy and overall output. It's like fighting a law of physics (literally) you want to accomodate the Turbine, not the other way around (the IM).
Just some thing to think about
Here is the GT3076R with T28 Housing car- with Greddy IM - with a stock IM that whole graph will move back to the left about 750 rpms and drop off will be minimal gains will be all in the peak region of the power band (7000+)

I agree, because I did just that.
but still, .86 housing is gonna be dicks, stock intake manifold or not.

So whats the verdict here??
3071 .86 or 3076r .86
Let's see here....Im going with stock intake and exhaust manifolds. Stock TB and stock bottom end. Pump gas and HKS Step 2 264's. Still debating on if I should get a meth kit.
Let's just forget I said anything about auto-x, drag or anything else.
I need to know which would be best 3071 or 3076, and which a/r.
Remember, my goal is to hit atleast the 400whp mark with the best possible powerband. I understand my setup will be laggier than a 2871, but 2871 is not what I want. Everyone, especially Steve has been very helpful, thanks for the info guys.

In that case just get the 3071r 64 trim.
You can easily get 400hp with a good tune.
I'm glad steve had a chance to chime in.
He's a turbo and tuning guru.

Go with the GT3076 R if your keeping stock im AND exhaust manifolds.
You won't regret it
then make sure to get a solid base map (from me if you want)- with a good ems or you are throwing your money away on all those big money mods

sry, there is no way you made that much power on a 3071 on 15psi. u were prolly running higher boost. but if you were on a 3076 ok but not a 3071.:ughug:
