Firstly, I did a brief search but was unsuccessful on finding the answer to my question. If there is a thread please let me know so a mod can lock this.

my problem is water is getting inside my trunk. the only thing I can think of is my rear window trim needs to be replaced. here are some pictures

Now I need to know which is the right item number that I need. on courtesy parts they have these two items.
#79816-moulding-rear upper, window
#79616 damn rubber sealant

website 797 Rear Window :: Body(Side & Rear) :: Genuine Nissan Parts :: 240SX (S14) 1995-1998 :: CourtesyParts.com (http://www.courtesyparts.com/240sx-s14-1995-1998/genuine-nissan-parts/bodyside-rear/797-rear-window/-c-3690_3691_3826_3833.html)

im guessing its the moulding because it goes on the outside. now if I purchase the moulding is this something I can do myself or suggest a window shop?

thank you in advance

If the window has never been replaced (that's OE moulding so I doubt it) it's not leaking from there. 99% of trunk leakage is from the tailights, the butyl rubber sealant dries out and becomes brittle, allowing for water to leak through, especially if the tails have ever been removed. You can also have corrosion around the trunk weatherstripping, if the metal rots enough it will leak underneath the strip. Check both of those first.

To answer your question though, the dam is a rubber retainer that the moulding snaps into which is glued in with the window. The moulding can be easily replaced as long as the dam is still good, otherwise you're better off gluing the new moulding in as it would require pulling the glass to properly replace the dam.

Dealer, or you can use RTV or silicone although light removal will be more involved later. The sealant is sold in a roll at the dealer, about $13-18, enough for two lights usually. Clean and degrease both areas and your hands first, the old sealant can be left in place as long as there's no heavy debris in it.

Call a windshield repair shop. Seriously. You can do windshield but it's something I would rather let them do since they have all the tools and expertise. Costs should be about $50 for labour.

The tools alone cost almost that much.

I got mine replaced at the same time as the windshield. Free labour because the windshield was already out.

Windshield guy actually thanked me because he said if the old moulding leaked, he could get blamed for a bad install, but with the new moulding it's much less likely to leak = he gets blamed less.
