Throwing or hitting someone with your shoes is a very disrespectful gesture in Arab culture.

Think of it like you're flipping someone off and slapping them across the face at the same time.

The Iraqis were doing this a lot during liberation of Iraq. As soon as US forces moved into Iraqi territory the locals there would come out in throngs and start hitting anything resembling Saddam with their shoes.

Like, they'd crowd around statues and murals painted on buildings and start throwing their shoes at them.

So, yeah, to most Arabs getting a shoe thrown at huge is a pretty big deal.
