View Full Version : S14 front rotor question

There are apparently 3 different front rotors for the S14. I can understand having two different ones because of 5- and 4-lug but why three? Maybe because of ABS? I've taken the following from Courtesy Nissan's site:

Front Brake Rotor (1) 40206-00019 Feb.1994 to Jul.1996
SE Models $59.63

Front Brake Rotor (1) 40206-00020 Jul.1996 to Sept.1998 Except SE Models $66.29

Front Brake Rotor (1) 40206-00021 Jul.1996 to Sept.1998
SE Models $91.96

Why would the 95-96 SE rotors be different than the 97-98 SE rotors? They were both 5-lug. There is quite the price difference between the two. Why couldn't I use the 95-96 on my 97 SE? Does having ABS come into play at all or are the rotors the same regardless. I'm curious as I've seen listings for various brake components where its only for non-ABS or ABS. I just can't seem to trust what is listed for my car. Is there a single place out there that lists the correct low beam bulb for our car? It's an H1 for christ sakes!!! Also, does anyone know the right dimensions for the rear wheel studs on the 97? Apparently the knurl changed from 96 to 97, that's the figure I need most. I asked this same question before and nobody knew and I've searched and searched to no avail.

TIA

as ABS was offered on both 96 and 97 models, i don't see that being a problem. the rotors haven't changed at all from the introduction of the car as far as i know. another supporting piece of evidence is that you can do the same brake swaps on the cars regardless of year. i really can't think of a reason why they'd be different.

as for the wheel studs.......man.......i really dunno about that, especially since i don't even know what knurl is. assuming the same brakes, wheels, and hubs, i dunno why the studs would change either.

man........you've really stumped me. :(

The knurl is that part beyond the shoulder of the stud that "bites" into the hub preventing it from spinning when you tighten the lugs down.

I think the 97 had different wheel studs in rear because I swore that those ARP studs that PDM sells couldn't be used on the 97+. I know people that have bought the H&R Spacers that have problems with the rear studs too.

Yeah, I would think there was only two rotors, 4-lug and 5-lug. There must be something different though, there is a $30 difference in the price.

There are not only 4 and 5 lug but two different sizes.. so there should really be four different rotors.

'89-'96 4 lug non-ABS
'95-'96 5 lug non-ABS
'89-'96 4 lug ABS, '97-'98 4 lug all
'95-'96 5 lug ABS, '97-'98 5 lug all

I didn't think there was a difference either. But I'm running calipers from uuninja's non-ABS '97 on my '90 and they're noticeably larger than the calipers they replaced. The pads have a 'lip' worn into them because I kept using my old rotors which are apparently imperceptibly smaller.

So my next rotor purchase is going to be ABS car/S14a rotors, I guess. By the way, the 4 lug ABS/S14a rotors are the same as P11 Infiniti G20 rotors.

If you're seeing a $30 price difference then don't buy your rotors from there. Other places I've seen have them priced approximately the same, as they should be.

Thanks AKADriver, that seems to make sense, although why didn't Nisan make the 95-96 ABS and non-ABS the same. Damn engineers...By the way, I had no intention of ordering from them, just using it to show the price difference (I've seen price differences at other places too just not quite so much).

I guess I was just asking the question to straighten it out in my head :) I can get "new" Z32 30mm aluminum OEM Nissan Reman loaded calipers for $75 a piece from my work so I'm just going the 300ZX route.

Anyone have any idea on the wheel studs?

Someone has to know some numbers on the studs. Maybe someone can confirm that Nissan lists the same part numer for the 95-96 and 97-98. The front and rear studs are different, right?

does anybody know how to do a 95 300z 4lug brake swap?
