Yes, considering I don't pay for the tow, since it's included as part of my AAA membership.

I never really thought about this. I pay for AAA too, but they make ridiculous money per hour for a tow. Even though it's not all coming out of my pocket. My buddy and I blew the engine in his old caprice just outside of Santa Cruz one summer headed back to LA. Premium AAA and 4 tow trucks to get back. All driving to the end of their "range", dropping us off, and waiting for the next tow truck. Took about 9 hours to get home that night. We didn't tip any of them. It's not that i'm greedy, or cheap, i usually tip very well for food, it's just one of those services that I never thought/knew should be tipped. Do you tip your dry cleaner? That's a manual service that you pay for too.

Maybe a tow truck driver can comment?

So far, I never did. One time, I blew an axle and the dude who towed my car was pretty helpful and friendly. I tried to tip him, but he wouldnt accept it. I noticed that most of the flatbed tow guys know how to handle dumped cars already :P

I use AAA, btw.

My tow guy hooks it up 40 bucks to tow anywhere in SD!!!!

pretty fuckin good compared to most company's who charge 50 and 60 just for hook up.. then extra for miles can get pricey

but back to the point i tried to tip him a few times, he wont take it!!!!! what a great guy

WANNA GIVE A SHOT OUT TO CV TOW GIVE THEM A BIG WHAT UP!!!!!!

YoungGun
12-13-2008, 03:47 PM
Yes, I only give like 5 bucks though, I would feel bad if I didn't give anything.

Especially with the headache it takes to get a low car on a flatbed.

usually dont tip tow truck drivers. if it's a real long tow, so far the longest was 111 miles. have offered to buy dinner and drinks at stops. but they get super mad discounts at stops. so he declined everything.

Never have, but I should probably start.

I once got a free tow from Peterson AFB to Ft. Carson.

The two truck driver forgot his license and got stopped at the gate. The whole thing turned into a 1 1/2 ordeal and the tow guy took the hit because it was his fault.

I took him up on the offer.

If I pay, yes, i'll tip $20.

If I call AAA, no, they pay enough to them.

Back when I had my last Mustang, I got 12 flatbed tows in a month, so we got on good terms pretty quickly!

My tip is purely based on how long they take to show up. An hour and I am not interested in tipping...

I usually try to be nice and buddy buddy, shoot some shit with em, but I never thought to tip em

Honestly...

I don't think they need it?

I remember a tow truck driver that towed my vert talking about him and a lot of people he knows make bank

THEN another tow truck driver the other day told me that there are THOUSANDS of cars that need a tow driver's help a day...just in my area. There can't be that many tow truck drivers...

I'd love to open a towing business for modified cars. Though it would probably be easier to load onto a trailer instead of a flatbed that's 4'+ off the ground.

Thats what 2x4's are for.

Your car must not be low. Mine would scrape like hell if we only used two 2x12s. We usually had to double up with four 2x12x48s total. 2x4's are far too narrow for a car with real meat.

Only picture I have left...

I'm sorry, I do not tip them.
They make HUGE cash, even if subsidized through AAA or Assurion or whomever, and I am LESS inclined when I have had to sit in an immobile automobile for an hour with steam shooting out of my ears and still have a service to pay for.
It's not like he is a waitor who is legally paid less than minimum wage with the knowledge that he will be paid tips, he is being paid a more than fair wage for his task, I am fine with not having tipped them.

The only time my car was towed was because I let somebody drive it and they got it impounded.

So, no need to tip that guy.

I don't feel that they need to be tipped.

Sure if you want to. I do drive a tow truck. Yea I have got tips, but mostly I do not. We do like to know you appreciate what we do. Some of us try real hard to make sure that you and your car are taken care of. Some do not. One of the post i read here asked if you tip your dry cleaner. Its a service you pay for.... yea it is but its a shirt, pair of pants... not your 15k or more car. Come on you want to drive that 60k$ BMW and want me to take MY Time to be careful with it, not scratch it ect ( thats time i could be on to the next person and make more money). Another thing i read is that why tip we get paid alot as is.. Please most of us are on commisions. That means out of that $50 bill your insurance is paying for my hour or more of time driving to your car loading your car taking it where ever you want it and droping it off I just made $10-20. And as for AAA they do not pay near what you might think. For those drivers that own their own truck, yea they make money. And then they spend it Truck payments ($2k-$3k a month is low) Insurance (figure required in some states is $1million coverage) Fuel (you want to complaine on gas prices.. most run diesel about $1 more per gallon and milage 10-15mpg is considered good)...... Another thing for you to think about we do not get to pick the time or place we have to go to help you.. we just go. its our job and most of us love it. When i first started I was told by those who taught me that they "don't do this for the money, but cause we love the job"..

when my head gasket blew on my s13 the tow truck driver that came got my car on the flat bed without my bumper needing to be taken off! most tow truck drivers would have just hooked it up and started pulling but he put the extra effort in! so i tipped him $40 so YES tip if he puts in the effort!

rcdad123
02-13-2013, 10:18 PM
i tip $20 bucks most of the time. except when my daughter wrecked her car and it cost me $230 for less than 20 miles. when i had my tool box towed, i gave the driver $40 tip because he was really careful not to tip my tool box.

240boi115
02-13-2013, 10:23 PM
no because everytime i get a tow im thinking "fml more money on parts!" besides don't they get paid pretty well?

Yea it's expensive but the driver gets basically none of it. The driver is the one doing all the work. I think they deserve atleast a small tip

i've never tipped. i usually get assholes who take forever when i confirm with the office that they are not on any calls.

father in law tipped $100 for the guy who towed their f250 superduty 247 miles. he has a once a year free tow up to 250 miles.

It depends on how they act in front of you/how much you know for a fact they are getting paid.

My dad doesnt tip the Tow truck guys that the BMW dealership sends because they are dickheads.

I have only used one tow truck driver because he is an independent guy with a tow truck. He's a nice guy and towed my car around a total of 4 times. I tipped him 3/4 times because the 3rd time, he tried to get $10 extra from my dad (I was at school when the car was being towed in between shops so my dad was there to handle it)

Usually a $5 bill will make him happy.

I used to work at a Chevy dealership so everyday we would get tow-in's (lol pos chevy cars lol) and so I would have to direct the tow truck drivers where to drop it off and sometimes I would help them unload the vehicle too.

After talking to a few I found out they were only making $8.00 an hour. The reason being that sometimes there could be dead time where and hour or two would go by without having to do anything at all and they would get paid for that. But that also has its down side since maybe in that hour they get really busy. And these were guys who did a lot of AAA pick ups. They do not make as much as a lot people in here assume. Tips mean A LOT to these guys. Tipping them boosts moral with a job like this and makes it a better day for these dudes.

Tip 'em I say.

I worked with AAA before. Tips make the person look like a better person. If I'm going out of my way up and above and you don't tip, I find that very rude! Also tipping a dollar is rude, as bad as that sounds but its pretty insulting. I'd never tip less then $5. If I ever use my membership ill be sure to tip $20 because I know how it feels to get that tip and I want to be the guy the driver remembers as a nice guy, not that dick
