not 100% sure, but HDR is a style of editing that requires you to take 3-5 pics and combine them.

Mike, as far as bang for buck cameras go. i would say any mid range, cannon or sony that has 10mp and a decent zoom. However they typically wont have detachable lenses, which is really whats needed to take Fantastic photos (fish-eye's ect.) I personally have a Sony Cybershot DSC-H7. i love the camera, just hate the fact that i cant change out my lenses (however thats what i have my Cannon Rebel 35mm for)

First I must say...I had no idea Michigan was that amazing looking! I am sure it helps when there is someone who knows how to take good fucking pictures operating the camera.
Here are two I've done....I haven't really had the best luck with HDRs at all and usually end up editing them more after the merge. I got a new lens for Christmas though and plan on going and trying to find some new places to take some shots at.

the last thing you should be doing is basing a camera on how many mega pixels it has.
You can pick up 10d's and rebel/rebelXT DSLRs for under 300 dollars these days, which will run circles around a 400 dollar point and shoot.
all you need is a camera with manual controls, or at the very least, a way to adjust EV settings. thats it, theres no special camera you need to buy.
btw...if you take the pics again, make sure the ISO is at a decent different (exeptionaly dark and light) it had issues with the little difference in ISO settings on your camera
ok, you really need to stop giving out bad advice. You dont need to change your ISO. In fact, if you're on a tripod and not using a flash, its recommended that you use the lowest ISO possible for the best quality image. all you need to change is the exposure. Most of the time, its beneficial to leave the iso as low as possible, leave the f/stop the same, and change the shutter speed, so the depth of field or image quality isn't different through the 3 or 5 or 13 or whatever exposures it takes.
also, bracketing is 90% of the time not going to give you the best HDR. metering for the scene elements seperately is what you need to do.
also the 3 picture series he posted is easily saved, just some cropping, the angles are all close enough to make it work

the shitty thing about HDR, and this is a perfect post to illustrate it, is that NONE of those pictures would stand alone, without the hdr (which i dont even think the beetle picture is).
the tree is composed boringly, the tank is horribly blurry and about 10 degrees tilted, and the skyline shot has someones jacket covering up the bottom right corner. But since "the colors are all pretty" and "it looks neat" people overlook it.

right, you need to take ATLEAST 2 photos of the same thing. different exposures. dont change the iso, dont change the aperture, dont move the camera, dont do anything but change the shutter speed. you shoot -2 or even -3 stops sometimes, and it increases the shutter speed. thus making all the dark parts REALLY dark, but making the bright areas exposed correctly, IE teh sky. then take one at the 0 mark. putting whatever it is you are focusing on, at the correct exposure. your darks will still be too dark, and your brights will still be too bright. then you take one at +2 or +3. slowing down the shutter speed. this will make your brights blown out and white. but what you're after, is getting all the dark areas and shadows to expose correctly. merge them all together, and you will see detail in the bright areas [skk], detail in the dark areas [shadows], and ofcourse the stuff in the middle will also be in detail. then you tonemap them and dick around with the settings.
i use a tripod. a STURDY one. no cheap shit, or wind will mess up your shit. use a timer (i use a remote so i dont get any movement in the camera/tripod). take your pictures. i usually take up to 7 shots. -3, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, +3. then i merge them together in photomatix. sometimes your highlights will still be blown out, and i will take the time to re-do the entire image. taking out the brightest or the darkest if i need to. really bright, and you will get purple/white spots that are hard to get rid of. too dark and you get alot of noise. trying to correct alot of noise, will result in blurry shit. it takes some time and plenty of practice to get it right. my advice, once you get the shot frames, and the focus correct, switch it to manual focus, so nothing changes. this is important. (dont forget to switch it back to auto focus before your next set of shots!! ive done this countless times, and it pisses me off when i get home!!!)
when i tonemap, i usually decrease the gamma (gamma makes your shit look faaaake!), increase the blacks a little bit. this gives more contrast, but at the same time it takes away detail in your dark areas [shadows]. sometimes ill bump up the whites a little if my sky is still blown out. i dont really care if i lose some of the HDR'd detail. as long as i gain in realism, thats my priority.
i have done my fair share of fake looking shit, but over time, i tried like hell to avoid it. heres some examples of what i feel is 'overdone shit'.
belle isle, detroit.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2362/2181852929_464b0e97d7_b.jpg
there was frost on everything, but it looks fake. i should have dropped the gamma and bumped up the blacks. it would have eliminated the 'glow' effect. i still think its decent enough to keep on flickr though. so its there. deal.
fake as fuck, but people seem to like it. i hate it, but whatever.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3017/2720996081_e0e0b0f823_b.jpg
example of what happens when theres a spot thats too bright. look at the bulbs in the light sticking up. its fucking grey/purple. that is data that is just shit on. there is no information to draw detail from. sucks. oh well, i feel the photo is shit to begin with.
top right of the picture. same shit happened. didnt realize till it was too late. fawk. i like the comp, too.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2080/2207561560_d469504eb5_b.jpg
was looking good, till i noticed a SHIT ton of noise in the bottom left. so i darkened it...alot. took away alot of detail, but helped eliminate alot of noise.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2237/2181858949_8f883407cc_b.jpg
the sky is fucked in this one. clouds look like cotton balls.. fail.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2170/2192880013_71b2d4ab43_b.jpg
the look can be mimicked by tonemapping. for example, this is 1 shot. i changed the exposure in CS3 and saved it as a 2nd file. then i merged them in photomatix and tonemapped 'em. not an HDR, it just looks like it.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2154/2160335548_358249d703_b.jpg
too much gamma. but i had to. turning it down made all teh dark areas black blobs. hate it, but others dont. thats why its still on my flickr page. i should delete that bish...
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3092/2557915636_81e5bc41ce_b.jpg
thats all for now. im tired as fuck and have shit to do. hopefully ill be doing alot more shooting in january when i have some time. hopefully i'll get into using my flash alot more. i still dont know what the fuck im doing with that shit.

It's fake HDR. One image with exposure adjusted via photoshop and the outputs saved to 3 files total, then those files smashed together in photomatix.
Hi Ib!

Beautiful shots.
Also, fuck you for:
1.) making me homesick for a place I've only lived a total of 5 years and
B.) making me facepalm for not having taken shots like that, when there were ample opportunities and locations to do so.

Of course high contrast is the shit, lol.
What do you think DV camera's, HD and still camera's have been trying to copy since they started being made, lol

I dont mind HDR in the right context. but to just make up for a shitty picture like most people do,......wack!
