Angry Ford dealer in SC blasts imports in ads
SAVANNAH, Ga. – A Ford dealer angered over the proposed bailout of U.S. automakers blames the nation's sour economy on Congress and criticized buyers of Japanese cars, calling the vehicles "rice ready ... not road ready" in a radio ad.
O.C. Welch, who owns a dealership near Savannah in Hardeeville, S.C., began airing the minute-long ad on a dozen stations in the area over the weekend. The ad sounds more like a talk-radio tirade than a sales pitch.
"All you people that buy all your Toyotas and send that money to Japan, you know, when you don't have a job to make your Toyota car payment, don't come crying to me," Welch says in the ad. "All those cars are rice ready. They're not road ready."
Floyd Mori, executive director of the Japanese American Citizens League, said Welch's remarks evoke anti-Asian sentiments often aimed at Japanese and Chinese immigrants to the U.S. from the 1930s through World War II. He also noted many Japanese automakers' cars are manufactured in America.
"It's a blatant, ignorant, racist remark from somebody who should know better," Mori said.
Toyota spokesman Xavier Dominicis said the company's cars consistently receive high marks for quality. The automaker employs 36,600 Americans, he said, and about 60 percent of Toyota vehicles sold in the U.S. were manufactured here.
"How do you tell a worker in Kentucky who's producing a Toyota that his job is worth less than another American autoworker's?" Dominicis said.
The car dealer, though, said Tuesday he had received more positive calls than negative ones. His dealership sold 15 new cars Saturday — half of them to people drawn to the lot by the ad, he said.
Welch said he's mostly mad at politicians, blasting them in his ad as only being good for "slinging mud and spending our tax dollars." He said the government should offer tax incentives for consumers to buy new cars rather than spend money bailing out Ford, General Motors and Chrysler.

The guy is an ignorant dipshit who doesn't have a clue. His product isn't moving so he resorts to idiotic remarks. Sounds like somebody's desperate.
And the people who bought cars because of his ad are just as ignorant too.
The fact that people still have this "buy American" mentality amuses me.
It's also funny that he attacks imports yet doesn't want the Big 3 to get bailed out.

i have an astro van but it constantly has problems thats why i do not buy american vehicles. if american cars started to build decent looking reliable cars then i would buy one. toyota is now outsourcing to mexico though.

Yep. Toyota's are such a horrible car, and they don't last for crap, and their one factory near shizuoka Japan doesn't put out 1800 cars A DAY.
The fact that American cars are not produced to the quality of Japanese cars, and do not have near the gas mileage is the major reason for American cars not selling. Hell, we have a honda we got from a close friend with over 500K miles on it. BAM! Still running awesome! *knock on wood*

Wait, what?
Yes. The factory I went to near Shizuoka Japan puts out 1800 a DAY. That is only the TC, Prius, Camry and Premio. The only cars at the Tsutsumi plant. There are 2 other major plants in Japan at Motomachi, and Takaoka...that produce the same numbers. The cars coming out of here are shipped worldwide. Total plants for Toyota in Japan is 12.
I should scan the brochure I have from there and put it up.

By Toyota, perhaps he meant Scion, in whcih case, HAVE YOU SEEN THEIR AD CAMPAIGN?
It's all about ricing out the cars. Hell, they have clear tail lights and "neons" as factory options.
Don't get me wrong, the guy said some stupid stuff, no doubt. He seems to have some underlying racial tension that he needs to take care of. :nono:
I'm just saying "Toyota, Rice Ready" instantly made me think of Scion. :ddog:

They all start at the same time, no talking whatsoever, the factory literally shuts off at lunch time. Lights, machines everything, off. They all walk off the floor. 30 mins later, everything starts back up and work resumes....until the end of the day.
