View Full Version : Hybrid s13/s14 valve covers
Lurking around I've heard a couple people make reference to creating a hybrid s13/s14 valve cover. I've searched a couple times, and really can't come up with much actual information on them.
What I've got so far is.... something to do with cleaning up the catch can setup, MA motorsports does it, and it is awesome.
Thats all I can find out though.
Anyone running them? heard of it? know what exactly it accomplishes?
I've got a couple spare valve covers lying around, and the idea keeps running through my head.
thanks!

I have one, Brian W of MA-motorsports made it for me.
The S14 VC has internal baffling. The S13 doesn't, hence the black box in line with the crank case vent.
This way you can use the fully baffled VC on an S13 motor.

The S14/S15 covers have a much better baffle in there to catch the oil, thus eliminating the need for an external oil catch can setup.
However, since the S14/S15 valve cover won't physically bolt up to the S13 head due to the extended piece in front of the intake cam for the NVCS setup, you'll need to cut the S14/S15 valve cover up and weld the S13 piece there so that the valve cover will bolt up to the S13 head.
There.
So does that mean you can eliminate the catch can setup entirely?
Do you happen to have any pictures of what the final installed product looks like?

dont think so, I still get a light mist of oil out of my valve cover every now and then when the catch can hose isn't connected

doing this wont completelly eliminate the need for a catch can, it primarily just helps to keep less oil from ending up in the catch can. the baffles in the s14/s15 valve covers help to redirect splash up oil back onto the camshafts and thus back into the motor.
i have seen a couple of these down at ma but i dont have any pics, ive gotta go talk to brian so i can take a picture when im there, if someone doesnt post one before then.

No, should still run a catch can.
But, it eliminates the black box.

wouldnt it be easier to weld a piece inside valve cover? like a baffle plate into s13 cover?
Ionno about chopping a valve cover on outside? and rewelding... you can..but... if you can easily weld a piece inside your good...
Pics.

Yea, the reason the S14 VC has a hump is to make room for the baffles, couldn't do that on an S13 VC.
I'm gonna be running -an crank case venting. eat that shit. lol.

Hi, We cut and weld it over the timing chain area. It was a pain in the ass on the first one(my green one) to set up the jig to cut them straight every time, but we got it. Not only that but welding 15 year old oil saturated cast aluminum is not fun! Regardless we weld the top, grind the weld off, then epoxy the inside. You send us $200(totally worth it for the labor involved) + 1 s13 valve cover + 1 s14 valve cover and you get an S13.4 cover back.
due to the material being so porous we sometimes get a couple little imperfections in the top, but its no big deal. barely noticeable.

so someone sends you 200 bucks and both cores and they get that back... sounds pricey. Not a lot of s14 valve covers floating around these days.

I would do something like this but I already have AN fittings welded onto my S13 VC and have a catch can setup.

i dont really see it as pricey. i put about 3 hours into them. Our hourly shop rate is $90.00 per hour so thats actually cheaper than a one off part. Its not for everyone, but it works very well for those willing to pay for one.
and you are correct in that S14 valve covers are harder to come by. Its something i did, then i had other people interested in one so why not offer it as a service?

the price is pretty reasonable considering the work involved... above all else its baller points! AN fittings on the VC are sexy btw I kinda wanna do that

Oh no I didn't mean the 200 for your labor, coming up with an s13, valve cover, than an s14 valve cover, then shipping, including any fittings I want to add to that.
Then if I want to get the cover coated or done up somewhere else I have to provide money for that and before you know it I could be 400+ into a valve cover.
Granted it's a worthwhile mod for cars that are actually used and what not for track duty...
I would eventually like to do this myself for shits and giggles... but I like expensive shits...
and giggles.

ha, yeah. if you get the valve covers for cheap and paint it yourself it wouldnt be that bad... but if youre buying stuff at top dollar than yeah this could get pricey.

S15 vc's have smaller coil pack holes then s13 or s14 vc's iirc... So hopefully you have some S15 coilpacks..

yeah, you should really have it ultrasonicly cleaned.... media blasting a valve cover is like media blasting a cyl head... too many small cracks and crevices for the media to hide in until the oil brings it out and it ruins something or clogs a lifter or who knows what.

this is true, please make sure youve got this figured out. Also if its an S15 NA valve cover you will also have to drill and tap the holes for the coilpacks to bolt to.
glassbead + valvecovers = engine failure.
yeah, not a good idea!

I'll get some pictures of it up tomorrow, I am assuming it was bead blasted, maybe it was just air-craft paint stripper who knows. I know it doesn't have any paint at all on it, but still has oil on the underside and the rubber sealant on the baffles.

I know you can buy them new man.. but why in the hell would I want to spend 200 plus on a new valve cover, then send that and my old cover to Brian to chop in half for 200 bucks when I could've just bought his valve cover for 400 bucks... and the only reason I didn't buy his is because I didn't want to fuck up the candy paint job he already has on it. And I want to shave the letters off of mine.
Want it nice and smooth like Stewarts cover.
