Im buying a GT2871R .86 but came across two options and dont know which one I need. Garrett GT2871 Series Turbocharger (http://www.frsport.com/Garrett-GT2871-Series-Turbocharger_c_233.html)

There is a GT2871R (GT28R Upgrade) and GT2871R (GT28RS Upgrade). From what I can tell, the only difference is the intake piece. One has a 3" opening and the other has the smaller bolt up piece.

Is that it?? Im gonna use a Z32 MAF but Im not sure which one of these two I need.

This is what I want.....
Not sure if I need the GT28R upgrade with RS style housing??? Im lost.

This is what I see on that site..

Thanks in advance

RS implies that it has the dual ball bearing, 360* center section.

I didn't know they were putting that on 2871's though. I have the GT2860RS (disco potato) joint.

The GT28R upgrade Style allows you to bolt up the stock or aftermarket intake piece for the turbo, i believe A'pexi and GReddy make units of those style of turbos. The GT28RS style will require you to fab up a pipe from the intake to turbo, i prefer the 2nd one personally. As for turbo choices, i'd get the GT2871r .64 trim the .86 seems to be a little laggy but makes up on the top end as long as you have support mods.

I'm running the GT28RS and pumping out ~330whp with excellent response! Depends on what your going for...

Steve.

^^^ Thats what I thought, awesome thank you.
So Im looking for the RS Style then.

Im going with a .86 simply because my goal is to surpass the 400whp mark.
As for supporting mods, I have HKS Step 2 264's, BC Springs, Greddy RAS, ARP Headstuds, 740cc's, FP, FPR, PFC L-Jetro, Z32 MAFS.....Do you think I'll reach my goal? I'm gonna Steve Shadows tune my car.

Go to the I post links, and then look at the options and specs.

The gt28r turbo can be gotten in lots of different compressor housing options. Such as with the bolt on type pictured about, or the ones for using a coupler.

Here is a link to the the turbo homepage, there is like 12 different gt28 turbos you can get. all of them have different options. the 360 degree trust bearing is on almost all new garrett turbos. And the GTXXR series are all ball bearing turbos. There is no other part numbers for different bearing options on any of them.

If you really want 400whp you could also look into the gt2876r turbo or a gt3071r with a t2 exhaust housing.

GT28r is an s-15 stock turbo and is capable of somewhere around 350hp. The GT28rs is the "disco potato" turbo and is capable of a bit more power. I'm not 100% sure on the exact differences, but I do know that the 28rs can crank out a few extra psi of boost and obviously flow a bit more.

Yes, yes yes! The 2871 .86 just doesn't make sense when the 2876 and 3071 are around. Have you talked to Steve about this? He's a huge fan of the 3071.

Actually I just emailed Steve about this. Ive heard he likes the 3071r. My only concern is fitting it without having to get an aftermarket manifold. Ive heard of a few ppl having clearance issue.

Thank you all for the info on this thread. Its very helpful to me. Keep it coming if theres more to add on the subject.

3071 is a fantastic turbo for a 2.0. With the rev capabilities of the SR with some work, I would definitely say look into that

That is not exactly right. The stock S14/S15 turbo is a GT2560 (commonly referred to as a T28) and I'm pretty sure it can make around 300whp. 330-350 is what you need the GT2860RS (disco potato) for. 380ish is what you need for the GT2871R .64 for and ~400ish is what you need the .84 for. Over that you need the larger style turbos (GT2876/GT30)....generally speaking that is.

If I would do a SR. It would be fully built with a custom made bottom mount manifold with a gt3071r on it sleeper style!

wtf.. GT28R making 350hp? bullox! That's Disco territory! Even with HKS Step 2 Cams 256in/264ex, HKS valve springs, Retainers, A'pexi Metal headgasket, HKS 555cc injectors bleh bleh bleh with the DISCO at 15-16psi i hit ~330whp. Ever driven a 300-330whp car? I don't get it why kids want the 400whp mark? braggin' rights? I have no freaking traction in the first 3 gears 4th can be scary too with my setup, plenty for meeeeee. just love the response! it's DISCO, DISCO! haha.

Excuse me, the 28r is the s-15 spec r turbo. Didn't think I had to spell that out.

There is a very nominal difference between a S14 and S15 spec-r turbo and essentially no difference in power output...and I thought they were all GT2560s but I can't 100% confirm this, as I know they have different Nissan part numbers.

The "r" is 100000000% for sure the OE s-15 spec-r turbo.

Hate to bring this back from the dead but I don't want anyone searching to get confused on the wrong facts.
S14 & S15 SR stock turbos aka gt28 is actually gt2560r the r is for ball bearing
The gt2860rs is the disco potatoe the s is for special
The gt2871r has a bigger compressor wheel that the 2860 but has three different compressor wheel inside sizes
49.2m, 51.2mm, and 53.1mm

Just don't get the SR turbos confussed with the actual GT28 turbos as the actual GT28 turns are bigger and don't get confused with the SR turbo compressor covers as the actual GT28 turbo can use the same covers but they are machined to accept the bigger wheels

Please pm/email me if you have questions. ..I am help to help
