View Full Version : Field Trips Canceled After Students See Autopsy of Classmate
PONTIAC, Mich. — A medical examiner's office in Michigan has canceled public school tours after a high school group watched the autopsy of a 14-year-old girl from their district.
The Detroit News reports Monday that Oakland County officials decided to stop the tours in Pontiac after they were contacted by the girl's parents, who were very upset about the March tour.
Mike Zehnder, the county's director of public services, says it was "a poor decision" to let the tour go on.
The newspaper reports the teacher who brought in the Waterford Kettering High School group was told the autopsy would be of a Waterford middle school student and discussed that with students.

Yeah after seeing how shittily my classmates in high school were at coping with death, i can't imagine what teacher in his or her right mind would take the students to the the autopsy of a classmate.
Unless they thought it would help, but I don't think it would for most.

I would consider a morgue trip if I was a teacher.
But I'm a little weird like that.
But seeing a friend being autopsied? Fuck that bullshit, that's stupid as hell.

My senior year anatomy class went to the morgue for an autopsy viewing. They do it every year.

I can see the benefit of such a trip for an anatomy class. I went on a 'field trip' of sorts to the San Bernardino County Coroner's office while I was an MP in the Marines. More than anything it was to familiarize us with the process and procedure of forensic pathology, but for someone unprepared for the realities of death, it could be pretty disturbing.
If I were that teacher and I knew that there was a minor scheduled to be on the slab, I would've cancelled the trip. Seeing a child being opened up (which is what I saw - an 8 year old girl) can be psychologically damaging.

Personally I don't see how this is anyone's wrongdoing, it was just an unfortunate coincidence.
The parents donated their daughter's body to science, at least I assume so, they must've known it could be used for something like this.
In high school, people in anatomy and medical classes were always excited for the autopsy trips, it was the highlight of the semester for them.
I don't think I could ever go on one.

"ok kids, this could be you, so dont fuck up! this kid suffered gun wounds from robbing a house" Sounds like a good field trip if you ask me lol jk
yeah i never heard of any type of field trips like this, but i can imaging it being something for an anatomy class.
I saw the Perris County was hiring for a coroner assistant a few months ago,.. i couldnt bring myself to apply for that lol

I understands the parents view point and they have every right to be upset...
But I think a lot of people on here are making this out to be something worse then it is.
The problem isn't (or shouldn't be) that she was supposedly a classmate (because she's not one,) it's that she's so young.
You shouldn't show an autopsy of someone that young to anyone who didn't need to see it (anyone but doctors, med students.)
Not to sound brutal or heartless but I doubt anyone cried or even cared about the girl.
She wasn't a classmate.
They're in highschool. She's a 14 year old from the same district.
I'm going to assume they're in the upgrades in highschool too. Due to the fact they are probably in Anatomy class to go on that trip.
You guys act like these are middle school kids going on this trip and seeing the kid who set across from them English.
They probably never even seen the girl before.
So if everyone wants to be all "omg so fucked up" train, at least get your story right.

Shame she was so young, but the fact of the matter is deceased bodies are used for education, and these HS kids were being educated. Gotta assume they were in an anatomy class (or something similar), and I'm sure they can use their discretion as to whether they want to see the body of someone so young (as it seems it was discussed with them beforehand).
Obviously I feel for the parents, and Im sure the loss of their daughter is making the situation feel so much worse, but at the end of the day, from the perspective of the HS kids being educated, atleast it shows the realities of death :(. I guess now they know whether they have what it takes to be a medical examiner, and can choose their future career accordingly.

Funny thing is your dumbass signed the paper saying your child could go. So uh, no. You wouldn't sue the shit out of that school.
Yeah, we too had a morgue field trip for the human biology class. I didn't get to go :naw: All I got to do was dissect the stupid goat eye. :(
The parents who are outraged by this are ignorant asshats depriving their children from education. They signed the fucking permission slip knowing where their children were going.

You realize that the parents who complained were the parents of the dead girl. Not the parents of the students on the trip right?
I didn't know you had to sign a permission slip from school to be dead. lol

I didn't even bother reading the article. However they obviously signed the rights of their child's body over for science or it never would have been put in that situation.
I just read it. What a poorly written article. People get paid to write that horseshit? I could have written a better article about how I missed the paper towel and skeeted on my computer desk this morning. That reporter should be shot.

Umm, I don't think autopsies at the morgue are bodies donated for science. She's not a cadaver at a school being used for science. Sounds like its part of an investigation and that's not something you donate your dead children to.
In other news, I just found out that the anatomy class at my school has human cadavers for next semester, all we had was a fuckin cat. I wonder if that makes the content different enough to be able to retake it?
