Going to paint my steering wheel a different color.
It's a mooneyes.
My question, what paint have you guys used? I'm thinking just a regular gloss or satin krylon with a gloss clear coat.
Any ideas would be great, thanks.
This is the steering wheel and i am wanting to paint the white part a different color. Not the chrome metal center.

not sure those paints will fully dry on the wheel.
maybe the rustoleum can of brush paint. the one they use for the $50 paint job. It dries tuff after a couple days.
I have had gloss spray paint never really fully feel dry. So if you do, go with the quality paint brands.
not sure its a good idea on a steering wheel though??

on the metal right?
just sand it down, primer and personally i would use dupli-color or rustoleum painters touch.

rustoleum dries up kinda hard, but i would try brush on paint like ericcastro said, it tends to dry harder for some reason... ive used dupli-color and it also ends nice but i dont know if it would look good on a steering wheel... oh btw yeah satin would look nice...

Wrap it with something... paint doesn't work so well on steering wheels. Your hands will be wearing the paint on your palm.

yeah take it to some upholster place they should know what to do... hot rod shops and stuff like that... thats one of seps steering wheels aint it? those wheels are nice! if you really want to paint it... take it to some place that know they're stuff... clear coated and all that would help a bit with the wearing down...

If you can figure out a good way to do it, this will become a new trend.
Why not use car paint?

Why not use car paint?
Getting good adhesion will be a challenge... plus go rub your hand on your car's body all day and see how long the paint stays.

thats not a moon eyes wheels.
is the grip part wood or vinyl?
if its wood, use any decent paint.
if its vinyl i would suggest not painting it.

it's wood if im not mistaken... thats why i said paint it with some decent paint or take it someplace because a nice prep/clear would make it last longer...

yea cuz mooneyes wheels are vinyl.
so him stating that it was a mooneyes wheel kinda threw everything off track.
but yea.
anyways.

I've painted over chrome wheels before, it's still sticks and still good.
Just sand the surface with 400grit and it should stick okay.

Only in 15" and 13.5" though.
Let's write them to make it in 12.5", because I've always wanted a purple wheel as well.

do they make adapters to make mooneyes fit on nrg hubs?

Mooneyes wheels use the same pattern as Grant wheels, for which hubs and adapters can be bought at any Advance Auto/Parts America or AutoZone. The cheapest most basic adapter costs 20$, it might also work with an NRG hub. If not, I'm sure you could find one.

Good luck with the steering wheel.

nope, that purple one is vinyl. made by grant... i have a white grant one (same as the purple mooneys in the pic, but different from op's)
painting it wouldnt work if its like this, it would just flake.

seps mostly sells painted wood wheels... you can paint them, just paint it CORRECTLY... like a few have stated before... decent paint and a good prep and finish will make it last... also don't leave it in the sun everytime that will make it faster to crack close to the spokes... wood expands so it will start to crack from the spokes in time...

Cool. Hmm what paint is the nextquestion.

12-08-2008, 07:49 AM
well... any gloss/maybe satin wood paint would look nice, but like i said it isnt like something that you will scratch and hit it hit a rattle can like interior paint, rustoleum is the stuff i use on interior, looks nice, kinda "tough" and if it scratches just rattle can it again... but for a steering wheel i would take it to somplace that has REAL paint hahaha... try a bodyshop maybe they can tell you more info...
a decent bodyshop that has good work behind them... not any bodyshop... better safe than sorry and ruin a wheel...

damm he was sellin me the same wheel wtf...
Just a few corrections so nobody gets confused.
1. Its a wood wheel with a MOMO bolt pattern. No moon-eyes here.
2. The pic in your 1st post isn't the one I sold you....I don't know why you used the 330mm one. The 2nd pic showing the dish is of the wheel is the correct wheel tho.
Here's the one you got:

And listen to bejota180sx, he knows his steering wheels

I used leather dye for my personal wheel, and its held up great over the last 6 months. It came in a spray can, and dryed in like an hour.
