View Full Version : So I got pulled over today...

Alright so I was driving down Valley blvd here in the City of Industry at about 6:45 today. Passing 6th St I noticed a sheriff making a right turn at the same time I passed. So sure enough he gets behind me and right away he pulls me over. Meh, I wasn't worried. I have no engine mods, I'm at legal height, non-tinted windows, and I even have the stock exhaust. So he comes up and asks me if I knew I had a headlight out, interesting...
So for a minor fix-it ticket he asks me for My License, registration, insurance and he goes back to his car and has me waiting there for 15+ mins. So he finally comes back with the ticket for me to sign and I tell him "before I sign this, can you please double check that my headlight is actually out?". So he asks me to get out and check for myself. So we go up there and just like I thought, my headlight was just fine...see for yourself...
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a262/Crayola0024/SSPX0380a.jpg
So we're looking at it and he tells me, "hmm, well it was off when i saw it.". I told him, "yeah I'm having some minor electrical problems and my headlight will flicker from time to time.". So he stands there confused for a bit and tells me, "well just get that fixed, sign here please." So I stood there like, WTF? are you serious?... I signed the damn thing and headed straight for the sheriff station to complain. So they called him in, I waited 10 mins and he comes in all angry. We argued for a bit. And his argument was, "you told me yourself that you had wiring problems, just get that fixed." I said, "wait, first you told me it was my left headlight, then you told me it was my right???". His awesome comeback, "what? I have a bad memory, GET OVER IT!"...
Fucking asshole...

Thats sooo lame. I got pulled over by that SAME sheriff station, more than likely a different cop. He was PISSED when he came to my window. I got let off though only because I think he got a way more important call he had to deal with.

why did you say you have electrical problems and it flickers? that means you do have a headlight problem and it was ok for him to tell you to get that fixed.

being nice sometimes doesn't work.

Sounds like he was trying to meet a ticket number. I know of cases where people were pulled over for DUI. Got tested, legally passed, yet still ticketed. If they meet their requirement or pass it, it equals more money for the dept.

it's fucked up.

for DUI? that's is seriously fucked up. i dont know about there, but in CA, DUI is a major offense. penalties were recently changed to be more strict. (stay in jail for the night, i think lose license for a year and/or huge $1000+ fine, and those points/dui record will make your premium go sky high)

Not saying its not a major offense. That was just a example. Cops have a quota. If I dont get that... funding could be cut (JUST my idea)

They didn't rip up the ticket. I'm gonna go get it signed off. The reason I told him it had some electrical problems is because it does do that, but never has it gone completely out. I thought after we'd discovered the headlight was working fine I was expecting him to rip up the ticket. But meh, Only reason I went to the sheriff station was to give that fucking asshole cop a hard time. I have time to kill at night, but I cant afford to take time off work to go to the CHP station.

Yeah exactly, I'm not really that pissed off about the ticket. I'm just a little upset because he was being a dick about the whole thing even though I was being cool and honest with him. It's only a fix-it ticket after all.
I've been pulled over for tinted windows at night. I even told that officer I had been drinking hours earlier. He was totally cool about it and just told me to get my windows fixed but didnt write a ticket. Meh...I guess it's my fault for being honest.

Yeah, I agree. It looks like you're running 8000k or 10000k bulbs man.

And saying "electrical problem" doesn't help.

Electrical problem = You have electical problems and it is possible that it effected the headlights and they were OFF at one time or another.

It is unfortunate that you got caught.

BUt, you having a faulty and non DOT approved HID kit or bulb that went out, isn't the Officers fault. In all fairness, that is not police abuse, or an outlandish ticket. I don't like cops, but if it's not prejudice or injustice, then I don't think that it is a legitimate complaint.

In addition it's a $25-30 fix it ticket.

FURTHERMORE!! YOUR CORNERS ARE FREAKING WHITE OR BLUE! THAT'S ILLEGAL TOO...
Be satisfied with just a minor infraction, dude.

Did you get it signed off while you were at the station? Tell him you fixed it and be on your way.

Never incriminate yourself man. Telling him you had an electrical problem is enough cause for him to have your car impounded for having an unsafe vehicle.

Every cop I've ever met says the most important part of getting a ticket is the attitude test. If you fail that you're getting a ticket for everything.

From your story and just the way you posted it, I'm gonna guess you failed that test.
Front plate and loud exhaust are legit. If your state requires front plates, have them. Loud exhausts are annoying as shit too. I don't know anything about the aftermarket bov though.
I love when people get pulled over for things they're supposed to have/know then get pissed.

He should have given you a ticket for bad grammar and spelling as well. He did his job. You have no front plate, which is
against the law, and you have an aftermarket exhaust which probably doesn't have a CARB #, if it does, just get it signed off.
Technically, you were speeding.

No front plate is some what debatable. My GF got a fix it for it because it wasn't on the front bumper, but it was clearly displayed in the front window, and DMV states that it must be displayed any where in the front of the vehicle, which it was. I even debated this topic with a cop and his answer was, " well they mean the front bumper" but it never says that. Plus my:2c: on the exhaust issue is that it's B.S. If it's ridiculously loud and pollutes then yeah I under stand a law for it. So IMO don't give me shit for it unless u have a decibel meter.

Just run your front plate

Simple as that

I dunno why people take off their front plate

If your car looks THAT much worse with the front plate on then I hate to say it but your car isn't nice enough

A dope car will look dope with a tiny little box of white in front of it, trust me

And all years of 240sx had front plate mounts so no using the Corvette "I don't have a front plate mount" excuse

If you're going to drive your modified car on the street you gotta accept the consequences

But if you're going to drive it on the street then I'd at LEAST try to do the minimum to avoid getting pulled over, such as:

1. Run front license plate
2. Have a quiet exhaust (flange on a stock muffler for street if you want to retain your full catback)
3. Don't run stupid color or excessively bright HID's
4. Don't speed, don't rev, don't weave lanes, don't drive dumb
5. Paint your front mount black if its excessively obvious (it's not gonna change your temps that much don't worry beef curry)
6. Don't run a LOT of stickers to make your car noticible

I could go on, but if you don't take precautions then its your responsibility to accept the consequences

They call them THE LAW cause they are THE LAW

If they want to Training Day your ass then that's up to them and you can't do anything...its not their fault they're profiling you into the group of rotten apples who do deserve to get popped

soooo.... my ticket should've been $900 instead of $422?

and btw for you guys complaining about getting tickets for your turbos and bov's or whatever... cops can give you tickets for pretty much anything in your engine bay that doesn't have a CARB #. I got pulled over in my 06 accord w/ an AEM V2 CAI but the V2 didn't have a CARB # because it was an earlier version. I told the cop that it was 50 state CARB legal but he said that I need to have the sticker on the intake or documentation proving that it's legal. the cop wrote me a fix-it ticket AND a visit to the smog ref for JUST a CAI that was CARB legal. I called up AEM and they sent me a CARB sticker but I still had to go to the smog ref. (I ended up testing wayyy lower in emissions than normal stock V6 accords. -_-)

whats the lesson here? avoid cops at all cost.

i've had enough no fault of my own pull overs to realise that they go for easy targets.

my only "crime" is driving a modified vehicle.

thats like saying all (insert minority group here) people are bad.

they profile us and i'm fuckin sick of it. so what do i do when i see a cop?
i cut out with the quickness. i keep a watchful eye when im driving and i always drive safely. i dont speed or drive wreckless or anything. but if i see a cop car up ahead or behind or at a light, you're damn sure that i go which ever way he's not going. i'm payed enough of the "modified vehicle tax" as i like to call it to realise that im better off makin a break for it.

the day i get pulled over for an actual moving violation (and since i always drive safe this wont happen) is the day i dont bitch about getting a ticket.

the way i see it is.

i drive my sr'd 240 MAYBE 100 miles a month, if that. it sits more than it drives. its not my daily driver. i have a work truck, for work. and than i have a minivan that i dd around town. dont really need to start up the 240 warm it up blah blah just to go to the store or soemthing you know?

i realise that engine swap laws are for enviromental reasons, but i just find the fact that some guy can drive a prius "eco-friendly car" everyday maybe 40+ mile commute and thats okay, but god forbid i take my 240 out on the weekends. hell that prius driver prolly speeds and gets way more tickets than i do.

point is. his car is hurting the enviroment more than mine.

maybe instead of smog laws we should have mileage laws. most of this eco-friendly shit is just a marketing scam anyway so i dont give a fuck.

you're right tho i am breaking the law by choice and i know the consequences. and i man up and pay my fine and move on. i wouldnt bitch if i got pulled over for what i consider a legit crime. maybe if i was zooming around playing "boy racer" like a jackass i would totally deserve getting reffed. but if im not and im just driving like you're suposed to i see no reason to get pulled over and automactially have the guy pop my hood. i've got insurance, tags, plates front and back, no tint at all, working tail lights headlights side markers, no tinted lights or any of that shit. hell even my intercoolers painted black so you can even see it anyway, and my BOV is recirced so its pretty damn quiet, and i've got the oem looking circuit sprot exhaust..so i consider my car pretty low key. bah im done ranting about this im pissing myself off, hahahha. im over it! fuck it. my car hasnt been on the streets since september anyway so i could care less.

Brian
12-05-2008, 04:38 PM
I think we all know that we aren't always treated "fair"... in a certain way.
While we may drive cars with illegal modifications, we are still breaking the law.
Somebody might have a 72 datsun pouring oil and gas out the exhaust, but if it is legal, it is legal. Maybe your SR is spotless and runs like a brand new baby. Still illegal.

It sucks, but that is just the way it is (for now?)

:)

my 95 in a 65 was 350! i learned from my mistakes.

wtf? i got a 92 in a 70 and it was $400, which was supposed to be $1400 because when i actually pulled over i was in a 65/construction zone, but he gunned me when i was in a 70/non-construction zone, so the judge dropped those charges.

i try to drive carefully at the end of the year. cops always seem to have to fill year end quotas or something. i hadn't been pulled over for 6 months till november, when i got pulled over three times (in my frontier) for stupid-ass reasons like, "your navi looked like a radar detector", and my windows (which came tinted from the dealership) "looked dark", and for doing a "burnout" into my driveway because i have to go into it at a weird angle and one tire lifts off the ground and spins since it has an open diff. i didn't get a ticket for any of them, but that shit's just ridiculous.

Last month I sat at a red light between two police cars, with no license plate lights, HID's and just bulbs for turn signals, front bumper halfway off dragging on the ground, revving an open header.
The lady officer to my left smiled at me. :)

I could go on, but if you don't take precautions then its your responsibility to accept the consequences

breaking the law.
there should be NO bitching about it if you are doing it.
play right or pay out the ass.

i agree with both these statement.

i agree cops can be dicks with profiling and all that stuff.

and getting pulled over ia a hastle and a pain in the ass.

tickets suck and are expensive.

but thats the price we pay for rolling modified cars.

until the laws change, just gotta deal with it.

we all no that it sucks; but, it is what it is.

bottom line:

you gotta ask yourself - is it worth the risk?

tell me about it, I been pulled over for these last 3 months of this year, and all 3 times are for the same exact reason, modified exhaust.

After the first citation I went to get it metered, it was at 87db, I think max is 93db, took it to get inspected showed them the proof they approved of it, they signed it off. Payed the $10 ask them for a copy of the citation and kept it in my car along with the db messure print out.

month later same thing, didnt change anything, explained to the cop I had just got pulled over for the same exact thing a month ago, showed him the print out of the old citation along with the db print out, I still get a citation, took it in, inspected, citation signed off, pay $10

month later, 3rd time, Im pissed, I explain to the cop, doesnt change anything, I still get the F*cking citation, Go to the police station file a complaint against the cop. What answer do i get, oh how do we know thats true you probably changed it.

never seems to fail around the holidays.

Dude, you're wrong:

You GUYS PLEASE READ and UNDERSTAND THE DAMN LAW, BEFORE YOU THINK YOU'RE RIGHT.....
Both you and THE O.P. ARE WRONG>>>>>>>>>>

IF YOU'RE GOING TO FIGHT SOMETHING, MAKE DAMN SURE YOU'RE FREAKING RIGHT FIRST.~

California Vehicle Code:

^Yes. And just to make it clear, for those who are fucking dumb... "The front of the motor vehicle" = the goddamn front bumper. NOT the fucking windshield. If your plate is in your windshield, and you haven't been ticketed yet, consider yourself lucky.

(this post was directed at Cali peeps, being that I don't know how the other states in the union regulate such things.)

This is a complaint:

I got a ticket for "NO plates" when I had just gotten my car back fom Earl Sheib.......I drove the car back from Earl Sheib to my house which was about 10 blocks away. The Bike police came in the opposite direction, and did a U turn.

I told the police that I just got the car and the shop didn't put the plate on.
I handed the police the Reciept ($375) paintjob as proof, but he still gave me a ticket because he said, that it was just a citation and he had to give a ticket everytime he has to pull a person over.

I had the Proof. But still got a ticket.

I had to go to the court and paided $35 bucks ($25 for the ticket and $10 for the court fees)

OR go to the sherriff which the office said It will be cleared and I won't have to pay. He said go to the Valley Sherriff's department somewhere far away. It was too far for me to drive at the time, and wasn't worth it. I found out that I could have gone to the Downtown LA Sherrifs Inspection, but that was a waste of my time as well.

NOW That is messed up. THe prick told me that "it was a rule that he had to give me a citation everytime that he stops a person." I was being cool and believed him, because I didn't want to be a dick myself and caused more problems. I kept telling him, "Sir, I just got the car painted, here's the Reciept." And by golly, it was the end of the month too.

Another story, Last week, I was in alhambra, and this cop just busted a Mean ass Drifting right turn onto Main Street when he saw my S13 drive by. I had seen him sitting in the corner prior to that, and I KNEW he was going to punk me.........

He went inches from my rear bumper, kept at it, just to see what I would do. I kept it at 35mph and I was like, BITCH, you can't catch me "driving Dirty", my shit is clean.

So, for the 3 minutes he was fucking with me, ON MY LEFT SIDE, THERE WAS A HONDA ACCORD DRIVING BESIDE ME WITH NO HEADLIGHTS ON. (THIS WAS NIGHT TIME).

If that isn't messed up............LOL. Punking me because I drive a 240sx, while another person RIGHT next to me doesn't have headlights on. WTF>>>>

Rules don't matter. It's how a cop interprets them. A cop can pull you over with a front plate displayed in the windshield if he or she feels like it.

If the cop thinks that your car looks janky expect to get punked.

Brian

somewhat off topic here but I'll ask anyways.

It was brought up that in an accident, if you have a license plate in the window, it will fly back and cut you like a hot knife in butter.

interesting theory.

I've heard it a million times by now.

however, has anybody ever had this happen or know 100% for sure that it happened to somebody.

This seems like the same argument that people make when they criticise cusco roll cages and say they will fall apart and smash your head in an accident.

cops suck dude, im a criminal justice student in my senior year and basically what ive learned is it doesnt matter if your breaking the law or not, if the cop is pissed off and he determines he doesnt like your ass for any reason....your getting a ticket for something.

Me and some of my friends were completely busted for racing on some back roads that are pretty popular for doing that, cop pulled up and basically saw everything. He had us all get in our cars (4 cars, 10 people) and came and questioned each individual car. I got it all on camera lol. At the end he said:

"haha when i was in high school, I used to race back here...actually i bet some of these tire marks are still mine haha" then he just left. Coolest cop ever.

Basically it just matters if the cop is having a good day or not.

NOW! Let the flaming begin: "your an idiot for racing" "its people like you that give us a bad name" "cop should be fired and you should be killed"

haha wont bother me....most likely.

I'm sure that just like every other business out there, they have weekly meetings telling them to get out there and make some money if they wanna have a job in 2 weeks...Fuck it...

Get pulled over.

Refuse to pop hood.

:)

just a heads up its mainly i 240's that get pulled in my part of town too haha

i had a 240 for 10 months i was pulled over at least twenty times within the first 6 months it was mainly stock just a tasteful drop stock exhaust stock wheels front license plate and all that jazz

i buy a 71 datsun straight pipe bright blue paint job aftermarket wheels and bright blue lights... never been pulled over cops just drive on by like nothing happened... it might also be because its a 37 year old car but even with other cars that my friends have no where near the amount of times ive been pulled over in my 240...cops think that 240's are just drift cars so they stereotype u on it
