View Full Version : I would just like to take a moment... (Engine Harness Woes)

This isn't really off topic, nor is it a tech thread since i'm not asking for help or sharing any how to information.

But I just want to give like a shot out or something to all of the guys out there in the SR community that have taken on the task of engine wiring, fixing wiring bugs, putting together how to's and experiencing it for yourself.

Anyone with money literally can put a car together, have someone else figure out why it isn't working for them and bitch and complain the prices are so high for electric trouble shooting.

I recently bought an sr20det (s13 redtop) to put into my s14. The price was right, it came with an s13, and the how to's for the most part suck for wiring instructions.

Well they really dont.

But it's suuuuuper frustrating from my personal standpoint when you dismantle a harness from a working car, that has been frankensteined to the point you just scratch your head and wonder how it's never caught on fire. Has steel insulated wire patches hacked in between oem copper wired harness lines making it almost impossible to follow pin out instructions or even trace pin outs when the wires have 2 to even 4 color transitions in between just one plug, or doing some patch work to clean the harness up and junctioning grounds with wires used for general home eletric work.

It makes me appreciate the fact people will actually offer services to the general public to wire up an engine harness for you and make it plug and play so you don't have to experience this for yourselves.

I probably could've finished my harness yesterday but I think I spent about an hour with the help of NRG just looking over the harness, aranging it for the re-pinning, re-routing and what not. But also plotting out which wires I will have to replace from the harness plug all the way back to the ecu.

I'm going to have to put the engine in the bay of my car just to lay the harness out and do measurements of what to cut and do the soldering in bay because of the junctioned mess that existed before. then pull the harness and the engine again to do it's maintenance work before dropping it all in and starting it up.

I like to do things the hard way sometimes, and I really just like to work on my own cars.

But seriously electrical, sucks.

I spent 2 hours last night trying to de-pin plugs on my previous harness just to get a feel for it, instead I got a feel for my thin screw driver in my thumb and successfully pulled out one wire yesterday.

So you guys that spend time de-pinning harnesses and re-pinning them.

bless your souls or something. I don't have the patience for that and nor do I want to risk damaging my connectors.

sigh, my head hurts.

Thank you for listening, reading, and understanding my frustrations.

Sincerely,

A frustrated car enthusiast.

(this was just all from unraveling the harness to see if there was anything i needed to fix or remove. and for the f2,f3, f7, and f9 plug conversion work that is needed.)

I finally figured out what that relay and plug are, it's a gm or ford plug, and that relay was for a car alarm *slaps head*

I used to love doing harnesses for the hell of it, but after becoming 'in demand' I realized how tedious it gets. When you have an extra car and all the time in the World, it's actually fun. Having someone breath over you and make you rush to get paid a sum you'd rather take a shit on it's so small is not.

Glad to see that pic of my old car is still floating around.

Why not just buy a brand new SR engine harness?

Cause that harness looks like its been through the war and back

Price of a harness new isn't that bad

And new harnesses are amazing...and no need to worry about engine fire that sorta thing

I never done a s13 Sr into a s14, but I have done my share of s13 harness that look like a rats nest and then the rat tried to eat it. So yeah I feel your pain. But i like wiring I find it very fun and amusing. Good luck

That would be dope to have a controller (like and NES controller) control some shit.

Or I'm just drunk. Not sure yet,

What I'm saying. Cheaper then having your ECU go due to a short.

What I'm saying. Cheaper then having your ECU go due to a short.

Why would I spend 350 dollars on a brand new oem harness I have to hack up would be my reasoning for that, I have all of the pin outs necessary to re-wire the entire thing.

It's just time consuming and frustrating to look at. It's like being in a whore house with every woman you wanted to sleep with ever, a never ending hard on, elephantiasis of the ballsack for endless rope shots, and frustrated because you don't know where to begin.

$350 is cheaper then blowing your ECU/standalone if the wires short.
You get all the connectors in case you are missing any.
How many hours to fix that one vs modding a new one? i.e. how much is you time/stress worth?

I'm sure the same man hours would apply having to de-loom the new harness, much less there is a ka-throttle body on my SR so the harness was modified to run that connector as well.

As stated before this was just a "I bow down to the people with patience" thread as opposed to "cry cry my car wont work" I'm very well versed in electronics, and wire sleeving is nothing new to me, i'm a big computer nerd and have sleeved an entire computer cases internals, same shit different toilet and I use a multimeter to test all of my connections out.

You can read up on what connections you will need extra protection on and heat wrap on from other peoples experiences.

granted im moving away from the new harness argument. If it comes down to it i'll buy a new harness and deal, but seriously it wont get that far. I'll have the car running in no time.

^^^ I'm with Om1kron. If the SR harness was actually the right size/length from the factory for a LHD S14, it might be worth it, but in order to make it "how you want it" (I hid most of my harness when I repinned/converted it), I can't justify spending that kind of cash.

And there are plenty of S13 pinouts so make sure "your car wont catch fire" or "your ECU won't blow" - it's just getting the factory S14 stuff to work with the S13 harness that's "fun".

That's why my engine harness gets standalone power from two fused relays (one for ECU one for ignitors) and the fuel pump has it's own power/relay - so even if the rest of my electrical takes a shit, the car will still run. REALLY helps when troubleshooting.

Yep,...Just bought an S13 (w/ a Blktop SR GT2560, PREV Auto'd Motor and AutoSE coupe, yadda yadda) from a member here "PBLESH" and its a complete Fuckin Hack job.EVERYTHING!

I really can't understand how this car for 1,..ran & for 2 is not a Ball of Black Ash somewhere.

Though,...I'm a Complete believer NOW (and pretty much have been),.that I don't trust anyones Work - Except my own and would advise people to take the time to Learn what they want done, instead of being Hand Fed what you need.Better and eaiser to diag in the future.

-gauges where Tapped by just Spreading the Wire in the middle and just wrapping the Wire Around it and Elec taping it.NICE
-Tried to Re-use the AUTO JDM SR lower harness and wondered why he could Diag the Issues he had (no start interm, car won't rev past 4k,etc) and WHY he sold the car.

Spent most of my Time so far just Removing everything and cleaning it up.

Ok,..Rant Over.

I'm willing to bet that that relay and plug were for a ford taurus electric fan rather than a car alarm. It is amazing how poorly some people, and even SHOPS, wire SR's up. I have seen wires just twisted together and taped up like that on many different occasions. Troubleshooting wiring is not easy by any stretch of the imagination, much less wiring that has been hacked up.

HAHA this totally makes sense now, I was just mentioning to NRG yesterday I have no idea what the fan shroud was from originally on my radiator (electric fan) He said it looked like a GM or Ford shroud.

I was just going to buy an aftermarket controller because that thing comes on full blast when I turn the key to the on position and then turns off when the car starts and clicks on when the oem fan is supposed to come on.

Taurus fans work well, it is worth keeping. You can use the temperature switch that is located in the lower radiator hose on singlecam s-13's to activate the fan if you want. It is actually a fan switch for the A/C fan on the singlecam s-13's. I just wired up a manual override switch as well for security with my altima fans.

that's just an upper engine harness, the nissan has like 5 seperate harnesses in it or something that are all equally expensive.
