Xbox 360 US sales see record-breaking Black Friday weekend

Microsoft has announced that US sales of the Xbox 360 over the Black Friday weekend posted a new record, and were up 25 per cent over last year's number.
Furthermore it's estimated that Xbox 360 sales outnumbered those of the PlayStation 3 by 3-to-1, no doubt thanks in part to the price reduction put in place a few months ago.
Software sales were also strong, according to a statement, led by Gears of War 2, Fable II and Lips, although specific numbers weren't given.
"We entered into the Black Friday sales period with cautious optimism, knowing that dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social entertainment value than any other console on the market," said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft.
"Record Black Friday sales in the US, coupled with our existing global install base of 25 million and an online community of more than 14 million Xbox Live members, have laid the groundwork for continued global sales momentum in 2009."
The company also underlined the console's sales performance in the Europe, where it is "outselling the PlayStation 3 week over week," and up over 400 per cent over last year's number.Red Bull becomes first brand on PlayStation Home

Yesterday, we reported that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves would be officially unveiled at Spike TV's Video Game Awards. Fortunately for all gamers, Drake isn't traveling alone. He is bringing some of his closest friends with him to the event as well. Perhaps you've heard of his buddy, Kratos.

According to Spike TV's "World Premieres" listing for the 2008 Video Game Awards, such titles as God of War III, Fight Night Round 4 and more will be revealed for the first time.

Nintendo makes an operating profit of $6 for every Wii console sold, according to the latest analyst reports, with Microsoft breaking even with the Xbox 360 and Sony still making a loss on each PS3 it sells.

The Forbes report's figures are based on an industry analysis by David Gibson at Macquarie Securities.

Gibson also notes that a whopping 60 per cent of Wii games sold are Nintendo's own first party titles, compared to 30 per cent on Microsoft's Xbox 360 and 15 per cent on Sony's PlayStation 3.

"Wii locks in fans because many of its most popular games appear exclusively on the Wii," reports Forbes.

Globally, Wii owners are expected to buy the most games in 2008, a projected 220 million units, compared with 125 million Xbox 360 titles and, still trailing behind in last place.120 million PS3 games, according to Gibson's analysis.

Nintendo also makes a slightly higher gross margin on its games of 65 per cent, compared with between 50 and 60 per cent in Sony and Microsoft's cases.

Interestingly, one post on the Forbes forum notes: "[Nintendo doesn't] seem to come out with software aimed at their unique base, the seniors... Every senior who wants to keep driving should have a driving simulator with their "Wii Driving Age" to keep them sharp. C'mon Nintendo, let's do it!"

A copy of DS title Animal Crossing Wild World sent out to media yesterday by Nintendo came loaded with most of the game's secrets unlocked, it also included a nasty surprise. When you come upon Baabara, the town's resident sheep, you're greeted with a racial epithet. The word is used repeatedly in your conversation with the sheep.
"I almost forgot about you, N—-a" "So got any juicy gossip for me, N—-a?" "Just thinking about it gets me all excited, N—-a."
The word, written with a tilda over the N and an accent over the A, apparently popped up in the game because the person who was playing it, most likely a Nintendo employee, customized the greeting of the critter to include the word. One of the draw's of the original DS title was that the text speech of the game's inhabitants can be customized.
The sheep was first discovered by MTV's Stephen Totilo, (http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/) who reported on it over on Multiplayer. I was able to track the sheep down on the version sent me by Nintendo and verified that she's just as mouthy in my version.
It appears that Nintendo copied the save for the game to multiple copies of Wild Word and then sent it out to game writers. The copy came with a letter explaining that content had been unlocked so writers could check out how moving stuff from the DS Animal Crossing title to the recently released Wii version worked.
We've contacted Nintendo for comment and will update when they reply.

here is a subject i find interesting with no correct answer really. do you think the next generation consoles will focus on disk based games?

i mean, face it there isn't much you can store on dvd9, in comparison to blu ray (not a shot at xbox just saying) especially that 16 layer one i read about on here. i personally don't think disk based games will be the main method of release much longer. here is what i think is the future of games, consolidated hdd's, or possibly direct download but that would require a ton of memory, where as a hdd could be switched out like on 360. i mean by the next gen it isn't hard to believe that memory storage like that will be pretty cheap. it's like a game on a memory card that you plug into your system.

i just thought it was interesting.

I went to my local Gamecrazy yesterday and they have TWENTY SIX, just sitting in the back. The last 3 shipments haven't totally sold out, so they keep piling up. They're in a very out of the way location though, so that has something to do with it, because nearby best buys are still sold out.


The Home service will probably finally convince me to get a PS3, although I may still wait for Killzone 2.

(alleyinsider.com) -- Sony's (SNE) PS3 is dying on the shelves.

Alone among the three major videogame consoles, sales of the PS3 are down about 19% from November 2007, according to the latest stats from the NPD Group. Sony was only able to sell 378,000 PS3s this November, compared to 466,000 last year.

And the problem for Sony isn't the recession, it's the PS3. Microsoft (MSFT) put up respectable numbers with its Xbox 360, selling 836,000 units vs 777,000 in November 2007. And Nintendo's (NTDOY) Wii continues to dominate the market, more than doubling sales from 981,000 to 2.04 million.

So why is the PS3 flopping so badly?

1. It's the most expensive console on the market, $150 - $200 more than its rivals. Even if you believe the video game industry is "recession-proof" (it isn't), a tanking economy makes consumers more price-conscious.
2. The PS3's big bonus is its ability to double as a Blu-Ray player. Too bad no one seems to care about hi-def DVDs. The differences between Blu-Ray and DVD are hard to see on a TV less than 50".
3. The PS3 just doesn't have any must-have titles exclusive to the console. "LittleBigPlanet" has generated decent buzz but isn't a game-changer, and neither is Sony's new virtual world "Home."

There's really only one option left for Sony to remain in the game: deep price cuts, and not just for people with good credit. Tell yourself the PS3 has superior graphics if it makes you feel better, but a $400 console with a mediocre game library simply cannot compete against an Xbox 360 priced at $200 in this economy.

I agree fully, the reason I dont own a PS3 is cuz ever game I wanted on their is coming or has come to 360. Plus is expensive as hell. I dont own a hi-def tv so all that blu-ray is better doesnt matter to me.

I think another major issue, is developers making some many huge games multi-console. I mean if exclusivity dies out, then it might as well be only one console maker

I went out and got a elite maybe like a month ago and after 2 weeks it started to freeze up my games so I returned it and got another elite and up to about two days ago it was working fine but then it to started to freeze up. So two days ago I returned it and downgraded to a Pro and guess just last night this FUCK WHITE BOX OF CRAP froze up again. I'm so fucking sick of Microsoft and its half ass console long story short I'm switching over to PS3.

E74 is one of two errors typically, AV CABLE, try replacing it with a friends to see if that fixes the issue or the ANA is shot

What exact error are you getting? I could post up some fixes for the simple errors...


Its not a error at all I will just be online playing L4D and once the match starts my x box freezes it like locks up I push the center button on the controller to get back to the dashboard and nothing happened. At first I thought maybe its the game so I put in a different game (DEAD SPACE) and after about 20 sec of playing it freezes as well so I'm like OK. Then I tried NFS Prostreet off line and same shit and all the x box I get are all brand new with the HDMI port in the back and everything.

^^ thats a heating/cooling issue, soon enough you WILL RRoD

EDIT: Also I've never had any problems with my Elite 360, I also have 1 base model and a launch box both of which have RRoD'd not that it really matters, but I wouldnt be at all suprised if i opened my Elite and the internals were better than that of my older boxes

Yeah after I looked it up online I saw that it was a overheating problem. All I know is Microsoft is making some cheap ass system or there system cant handle my hardcore online game play lol. Well I'm going to go and exchange it for another elite and this is the last time if it F*up again then I'm gonna be on that PS NATION

I'm so sick of my 360. I went out and got a elite maybe like a month ago and after 2 weeks it started to freeze up my games so I returned it and got another elite and up to about two days ago it was working fine but then it to started to freeze up. So two days ago I returned it and downgraded to a Pro and guess just last night this FUCK WHITE BOX OF CRAP froze up again. I'm so fucking sick of Microsoft and its half ass console long story short I'm switching over to PS3.

Maybe you just got some suck consoles. I've had a replacement go red ring on me, they just sen another one, its worked fine for me. Only froze once. But I feel you on the hassle, I mean yea sure they will fix it, but why cant they just fix it to where I don't have to send the sombitch back

i had the same freezing issue with my 360, took only 3 days after i bought it for it to start acting up. i sent it to m$ to get fixed but i am hoping they just send me a new one back. evidently the jasper models (new ones) are better than the falcon models (old ones) somehow, the way you can tell the difference is the brick thing that you plug the 360 to, on the bottom if it says 175w it is old, but 150w is new.

honestly though, the 360 just feels and looks cheap compared to the ps3, in my opinion at least. sure the ps3 is more expensive but i think you get more for your money, plus after m$ nickles and dimes you for everything you might as well just get a ps3 and not worry about rrod. i mean, ps3 has wireless rechargeable controllers and wireless internet connection built in, but you have to pay for a wireless adaptor, rechargeable battery, and recharging kit for the 360.

i just bought both so i don't have to worry about exclusives.

Have you actually torn into the internals of the xbox? If you voided your warranty depending on the problem your looking at somewhere between $70-120 from M$. If you are getting E74 I would definitely try another power brick just to be certian

no i havent torn into the xbox it seems like a headache :duh: and i really dont know what to look for exactly. Is the power brick the gray thing that connects to the back of the 360? And i dont have warranty anymore.:tweak:

Yes, there should be a cord that goes to your outlet connected to a big grey (or black for the elite) box (referred to as the brick). It should also have a light on it, Orange when its plugged in, green when your box is on, and red if its experiencing an error. Now the AV cable is the Audio/Video cable that plugs into the back of the unit that also is known to have errors this is the cord I would replace with a friends. Unless your power brick is red its not the problem. The box isn't all that hard to take apart as long as your careful IMO

WEll i checked and the brick is good. BUT the A/V cable on the back is RED. Is it always RED?

I'm going to try and swap the a/v cables with a friend as soon as possible
