my rack is leaking and i'm thinking of just taking the steering pump belt off....

now i know the steering will get rediculously heavy at low speeds (parking lots will be a cunt) but other than that, once the car is rolling will i have a huge problems trying to whip the wheel around during drifts?

When I took off my power steering it didn't really affect anything for me, but your experiences might be different. Personal preference I suppose.

Fix your rack. Drifting without powersteering is a bitch.

I didn't think there would be a lot of events right now in Canada.

honestly i don't even drift much, just spirited driving i suppose, i mostly just daily drive

just don't want to run into problems when i get in trouble trying to correct mid corner....

Good info, if it's not on the track then you shouldn't have any issues on the street or with spirited driving other then what you mentioned in your op. You'll also get gnarly forearms.

correcting mid corner or haveing to instantly turn your car against its will?momentum is gonna be really really really hard without power steering. which also makes it a bit dangerous.

so as a temperary thing, take off the belt and save your pump. But get a new rack of fix your existing before you hit any curvy roads at speed :)

I would say that Power steering is more important for DD than for any sort of event given that at an event you expect to use greater strength/ability and are more attentive to what is happening. Without power steering on the road in a car designed for power steering (which means the ratios were set up for Power steering, it isnt just like an old car, it should be considerably heavier) this would be not only annoying but also atleast alittle dangerous.

That being said, I drove an '84 Opel hatchback this summer without power steering, and after about a day or two, you just get used to rolling a little in parking lots before you try to turn the wheel and you dont really notice the pressure. And yes, you do get knarly forearms and it does make you feel like more of a man, so take it as you will.

Drifting without a rack in a s13 sucks balls.

I tried it on a car and hated.

On my FC it was manageable, only due to the way geometry was.

But I still missed it.

Also, removing the belt isn't the proper way to de-power your steering.

Fix your car, don't be cheap/ghetto.

Depends on the rest of your setup.

15in wheels and stock caster and it doesn't matter

big kids 245 Z1s and 9+ caster and its impossible. you just have to drop the wheel and drive the car with the brake and gas.

I learned to drive competitively without Power steering, and I do it all the time to build my technique. Think of it as a handicap.

I took the power steering componets out, and re-looped it, which made it better.

The steering response with and without powersteering is crazy.

Talk about a workout.

I drifted without it for the first time a few weeks ago. And the first few runs were soooo shitty and annoying, but after a couple runs its doable.

The tricky parts are when you hit full lock, once you get to it, it doesn't like coming out which delays your responses.

Now granted in the end I think not having PS helped me learn the track a little faster.

it sucks....trust me. I've driven many different cars at track, the ones without powersteering blow! weight shift feels gay. and like the guy above. once your full locked...good fucking luck. but...if you are a 300 pound man...you might be able to do it...but daily...you'll get so annoyed its gay. that's all I have to say.

keep the pump and belt, remove the lines.

Vent the lines to a resivour. The lines are the ones parralell to the rack, they are the ones affected by the oil seal on the shaft.

Remove the spring and shims on the adjustment bolt.

I completely depowered the rack by cutting off the oil seal, lubed up the shaft with amsoil synthetic grease, and sealed up the all of the ports.

Drifting/hard cornering is cake.

The only downside is the stress on the lower steering column joint.
