View Full Version : a;alksjd F*** I officially hate rainy days. Hydrolock rant.

Normally I do, and when I was stock KA it was fun with the welded.
al;ksjdf;lka
Well, story goes...I was on my way to a friends birthday.

Was following my friends and hopped on the 22 Freeway.
As soon as I got on I was in 5th and spinning with anything more than 1/4 throttle.
[KA-t + welded diff + rain = not so fun.]

Fine.. So I'll just baby it to the exit, its only 1 1/2 miles away.

As soon as I exited I got excited. I was almost there.
Exited Brookhurst.
Wow, turned the corner of the exit and got to the light to find a big puddle.
It was about 6ft across and looked pretty deep.
[turned out to be about 2 feet.]
Okay I exaggerated, maybe 1 ft]

I knew it, I was fucked.
I couldn't go around or back on the freeway.
Fuck my life. :bash:

So I tried to cut across.
That didn't work out so great.
Hydrolocked right after I came out.

Hazards on and pulled over.
friend was behind me so he waited it out with me.

So I called my friends who exited before me.
They came to my rescue.
one of them had AAA. Thank you god.

Tow truck came and waited in the rain to watch him load it up and got soaked. Not fun.

Gutter was filled with water up to the sidewalk.

The tow truck driver was pretty cool, Old dude in maybe his 40-50s.
He had a 240 at one point in his life too. awesome.

Got home and now I'm here.

With that being said....
Any tips on what to do about my engine?

Take out plugs blah blah to get to water out, change oil, anything else?

soreballz
11-26-2008, 03:52 AM
I hope you didn't try to crank it over after it shut off. If you did, you may have done some real damage.

Don't just pull the plugs and start cranking. Try to suck as much water out as possible first, then crank with the plugs out to get the leftover water.

Keep in mind, you'll have water in all of the intake tract, along with the combustion chambers.

Aside from that... Good fucking luck. lol

hmm i don't really have any advice but just wanted to rant also

i was coming home on the 5 just now, so i get in the exiting lane when all of a sudden..

my car makes this HUUUUGE TIDAL WAVE literally about 8 feet tall

i thought i was gonna eat the wall or spin out as i held on to the steering wheel for my life

FUCK THAT!

(but good luck on getting your car fixed)

i know how you feel .. today at work .. i was starving ! i was on my way to the jack in the box .. excited as hell! only to find out .. there was a 1 1/2 foot puddle RIGHT in front of jack in the box .. so i turned around .. with an empty stomach ... pissed .. andi continued working .. we can fix your car .. tomorrow ... or the day after .. i wouldnt mind spendin thanks giving workin on a car .. plate of food .. beer .. spark plugs .. oil .. motor .. car .. friends .. what can be better ..

Should have cut the car off and coasted through it and then started it back up after you made it through the puddle.

I'd pull the pan and the head to get all the water out as you can. Use a lot of rags and wd-40 and let it dry for a few days. Replace spark plugs and wires, check the dizzy and go from there.

Hopefully it's nothing bad.

well im not much help to you but i did the same thing with my redtop SR back in hte day and all i did was go out and crank and crank and crank day after day. i think after about 3-4 days of cranking here and there it finally started. once it started i had water shooting out of the BOV. Weird thing is ive had no ill effect from that day and still managed to dyno it at 213rwhp on mustang dyno at 10psi.

and this is why my 240's will probably never see the rain in California. I almost hydrolocked my civicsi with an aem back during the bad rain storms, I coasted into a puddle I couldn't avoid and my car shut off. I got out and pushed the car while my ankles were water deep out in northridge heading up to the 218 I think it is.

That sucked, I took my aem off by hand threw my filter on my intake manifold and gave it a crank and the engine started up just fine. After that no more cold air for my car, fuck that noise I just paid 4 grand to rebuild it and have race headwork done.

Few other friends weren't so lucky =(

I'm scarred shitless even thinking what it's like to pummel through a tidal wave with a diff and a 240.

Best bet is to drain the water like you said and change your fluids out and hope to god there is no internal damage... GOOD LUCK MAN, shit sucks...

My friend did the same thing is his 01 GSR-T Big puddle the car shut off, i told him not to crank it over and what does he do....Boom, rod #3 was bent like some old banana. So I invested in that wet filter from AEM good money.... Just my story.

But yeah Addicted2Kouki, pull the plugs, drain the oil, maybe take the oil pan off to let all the water drain down, take a shop vac into each cylinder hole to try and suck up the water.

Make sure your engine is lubbed. All the areas that water could have been, can or will rust. So after drying, oil everything down.

In addition to removing the spark plugs.
Should I unplug the injectors before I get to cranking?

As of right now.
It is sitting with all the intercooler piping out,
intercooler sitting on its end to drain,
throttle body wide open,
spark plugs out,
and filter off to dry.

my brother did the exact same thing to his KA. Hydrolocked the sucker.

drained all the water out of the engine and bam fired up and ran. Sounded a little off but hey it was good right. Wrong about a week later he threw a rod out the side of the motor. Looks like the water potentially bent the rod a bit or stressed it enough to spin a bearing.

I would say your chances of saving your motor are slim.

I WAS going moderately slow.
my intake piping is routed like a cold air intake....
Driving thru it any slower than I did would result in worse hydrolock and being stuck in the middle of the puddle.

I shall see in the morning about the damage.

sucks man. our city flooded this summer and i was out with my car. i drove through some puddles that completely submerged my front bumper and were up onto the hood.

motor only shut off once but didnt hydro lock, the MAF just got wet so it bogged out and died in the middle of a puddle. it sucked becuase it was so deep that when i opened my car door all the water came in...

I was with him with this happened. Sadly there was really NO WAY for him to go around this friggin mini-lake. Besides, pulling over to the side of the road was flooded too haha. No nearby pizza places either that are open past 12am. hehe

It was right off the freeway offramp so he had to go over it. And yes, that sob was deep. Yay for stock intake so I was fine.

I got Triple A for him. Guy was cool, felt bad though when he had to work in the flooded area. If I had any cash, I would of given him a tip.

A little bit later after I got home, met up with a friend and hit up Del Taco. There was another mini-lake up to the parking area to reach the Del Taco that also flooded an entire lane, the turn in lane. I just went to the #1 lane, aimed as straight as I cold and punched it lol. Worked like a charm and I threw in a little poser slide in the process haha.

Even when I went back home, I have to drive through some alleys. Entirely flooded. Engine bay / hood got soaked!

Reminds me, Powersteeringless180sx lives next to me. Hope he got through okay.

Anyways, time for new tires and John, let me know if you need any help with whatever, besides sexual favors.

Good news! I think the water just blew out my spark.

No hydrolock, but my intercooler piping had water in it on the hot side and the intercooler was filled with water.

I Shop vac'd the cylinders, turbo, and intake manifold.
Took a compressor and blew out all of the above to get the rest of the water.
cranked it without the spark plugs.

Put everything back and it started right up.
No rough idle. No sputter... it was good.

That does remind me, I NEEEEEED new tires.

Splashing and submerging are two different things. In order for a motor to hydrolock or blow out a spark, the intake needs to be pretty much fully submerged and suck all that water up. Kinda like a straw. Splashing water will only wet the filter. Which by itself may or may not cause problems.

Water coming in the intake is pretty much the only way.

Yeah, for real.

Water coming in the intake is pretty much the only way.

But then again someone stupid enough to be running their intake that low should have seen it coming.

I mean really, routing a filter to the lower front of the car...

What the fuck.

Hence...

I knew it, I was fucked.
I couldn't go around or back on the freeway.
Fuck my life. :bash:

LOL
