View Full Version : HELP!!Getting STUCK in DRIVEWAYS

hello fellow zilvians,
I have a really annoying car issue to discuss about. Just yesterday, I installed some megan street coilovers for my s13 with a 1 finger gap in all four corners. The megans are okay, and the drop looks nice. However the main PROBLEM is that i keep getting STUCK on "deep" driveways with the spinning wheel not getting traction when the car is at a angle...(twice! already) and its getting pretty annoying and embarrassing pushing my car... (im pretty sure alot can relate to this...)
so my questions are...
1.How did you guys overcome this annoying issue? or what do you guys do to avoid this from happening? advice?
2.I'm obviously aware that i have a open diff, and im considering planning to get a used s13 vlsd, would this help out with the non-spinning wheel? or does it have to be a 1.5/2way lsd?
PLEASE help!! any would be very appreciated. :D
P.S: and i seriously feel like im getting :boink:by these driveways...

Just angle more when you pull in and get a welded/lsd on that bitch.

WOW!! so many replies already :D thank you thank you
so im assuming that a VLSD would not help me out??
haha dont go in/out driveways? but they're like everywhere!!?
hmm...more angle? can you guys give me some example of more angle?, taking drive ways better? haha never drove this low before (and my rear spinning tire is like raised 4-5 inches)
yeah...im a noob...appreciate the help :D

instead of driving up the driveway straight on, take it at a angle. that way you will be less likely to be stuck with a wheel off the ground
or why dont you just park on the street?
and yes, a vlsd would help get you unstuck. Just make sure you don't buy one that's blown
hk240sx08
11-19-2008, 10:43 PM
haha...i do take driveways on a angle or else ill be scratching everything straight on...but thats when the rear wheels magically begin to float...>.<
how do you know if a vlsd is blown or not?
nismoskyz
11-19-2008, 10:48 PM
and give yourself some momentum (go faster!) so when you get to that point where that 4th wheel is in the air, the momentum will roll it through to the point where it can grip again.
also, im not sure how well this would work but i would think if you soften the dampening on the rear coils you'll probably not have the tire get so high off the ground either.. so: less chance of getting stuck.

keeping a couple of 2x4's in your trunk work too.
I don't know what your going up, but my guess is your doing it wrong
my driveway is horrible, not only is it steep but it's cobblestone and not perfectly flat
just go up it the right angle you'll get used to it.

what size wheel and tires are you running?
and have you fender rolled?

Well even a VLSD should be good. Only thing is depending on the condition on it, it maybe take a bit for it to lock. It may not lock right away.

Park on the street. I would recommend welded diff, the fun factor is great and people always look at your car when they hear the squeaking of the tires. But yeah like others said, some momentum will help.
I've never seen a situation where people get stuck on driveways, only heard of them. I have a lot of friends with slammed cars and they all make it onto some crazy driveways pretty easily. Good luck!!!

I run an open-differential ( at least at the moment )
I basically open my garage put it in 1st and slowly take off up the driveway my tires rub the fenders most of the time.
I've never got stuck...just about taking angles right, and when you start to slip go down a little bit and try again.
I should take a video of me going up my driveway :D

Fuck I have a BRUTAL driveway for this. Have only got stuck a couple times surprisingly though.
My driveway sucks because if I go fast to not get stuck I smash my bumper and If i get slow I get stuck or almost get stuck haha.
But I have now mastered it to an art. Lots of angle and just find the right speed!

i was saying this because when that happends
one side lifts up puts pressure on the other side
kinda like tire gets pushed all the way into the wheel wells and gets stuck

but i have vlsd so maybe that help too

More speed works when you get in a situation that you know, for example your driveway, but entering a gas station can cause more harm then good if it is new territory.
Welded is going to be your best bet if not getting stuck is souly your goal (not to beat a dead horse).
Have you tryed your brakes or parking brake?

aim the front of your car at the lower end of the sidewalk. thats about how extreme everyone is talking about....well depending on the skirt of the driveway. everytime i turn into any drive, gas station, drive way, i always go at a real extreme angle and real slow. I've gotten a couple people to lay on their horns for me :P

Why don't you adjust your ride's height to a practical level? It doesn't have to be 4x4 status, but your exhaust doesn't have to make sparks everytime you switch lanes on the freeway...

umm.. pretty sure that means 1 finger of wheel gap...
megans dont even go low enough put the car 1 finger from the ground...
and even if he was that low, why raise the car? if it is high enough off the ground to roll forward and backward, you have plenty of clearence.
you should never have to raise your car, thats blasphemy...

i dont understand why you guys are saying to do it at an angle. angling into it is what causes one wheel to lift and therefor spin.
if you can hit it straight on, or just go fast enough into it to pass the point of spinning a wheel.

Or try backing in and see if you get up.
Or just raise your car to a sane level, there's no reason to be that low.
Now go do it and get it done.

the point of angling it is so that you don't rip your front bumper off or just beach yourself on your tension rod brackets.
going up my driveway straight on in a very low car would be literally impossible
i already scrape my tension rod brackets approaching my driveway nearly horizontally

no shit, but its the angle that causes one tire to lift and spin( the point of this thread)

dude.. im getting in and out of driveways .. and my car is almost kissing the ground .. i mean .. my exhaust piping is scraping some deflectors on the road .. haha .. my advice is .. know your streets .. know your driveways .. if you know you wont make it up the driveway .. then dont go up .. that's your fault for having your car low .. i go through the same thing.. get a welded .. go at the driveway with a hard ass angle .. and gain some momentum ..

Drive as close to parallel as possible until one rear wheel is 'on' and cut in after that. You'll be fine.

You need to angle it so that both right side wheels (or left if coming from the other direction) are on the curb before cutting harder right.

Same thing happens to me when I go up steep driveways. Time for an LSD or a welded diff for me. As for your issue hk240sx08 , I also recently installed Megan coil overs. Yes it gets annoying at times. Try taking the driveways at more of an angle and drive up faster on the steep driveways, That's the advice from my experience. i constantly got hung up on the curb/slope to my parking spot/garage.
id have to use another car to push mine up into the driveway, then jump back in the 240 to pull it into the garage.

When i first put my coilovers on i was almost late to work cause i got stuck for like 5 min. But I gots an extreme drive way but for the folks that are slammed and don't have coils and anybody that has them and just doesn't know the reason all us coilover folks get stuck is because our suspension doesn't move enough like a spring strut combo and its just something we gots to live with. They weren't made for driveways anyway LOL:Ownedd:
