View Full Version : OEM side skirts
After checking the FSM on how to install the OEM sideskirts, no help.
Does anyone know how to install these. Ive been thinking about it and I think I might have to drill holes into the car, just to mount them.
Any help would be greatful.

Yes you have to drill holes for them to fit perfect. You also have to locate those holes pretty damn accurately. If you are new to this and/or not extremely handy I would reccomend having a professional do it.
Or you can do what everyone else does that doesn't know how to properly mount bodywork, use zip ties!
LOL!
Zip ties will not work. Where, and how would I mount middle of the skirts. Yes zip ties would work for the ends but not in the middle.

They make this stuff called tape. Some of it even has adhesive on both sides. Amazing shit.

guessing you weren't one of the lucky ones who got the clips that go along the bottom of the skirt to attach to the car.
pretty much it's just drilling to holes on each side for the ends and using double side heavy duty tape.

yeah drilling might be ok for you cali guys but on the shitty coast it often leads to rusty rocker panels and fucked fender wells.

two stainless steel screws on either end. tape did not work for me but my skirts were not oem. I used clear goop. I had to using masking tape in copious amounts to hold skirt while goop dried. i would recommend a practice run to make sure screws go in right etc before using goop. anythig stronger than goop is not going to be a bitch to get off etc. I did use 3m double sided tape but it was not strong enough to hold skirt. on drawback to clear goop is that it yellows when it is thinly spread on paint. maybe use masking tape to control how far it gets spread away from joint.
tape isnt much good by itself as it rots as dirt and moisture seep in.

be a man and use dzus fasteners. or epoxy. that'll work better than zipties
Not scared of drilling holes Ive just got to find some rust prevent paint. Hell drilling holes is the same as weight loss. I have thought about the "double sided tape" that you speak of. Thanks all

Double sided emblem/moulding tape will work fine as long as you do three important things:
1) Clean the FUCK out of the sideskirt, removing any bit of residue of anything, then wipe it good with acetone to dry up any oil/grease that was left behind.
2) Heat the skirt to at least 70 degrees before applying tape, press the tape hard and evenly every few inches every few seconds.
3) Do the same thing to the car.
People who have skirts falling off that were taped simply didn't do it right. I've seen spoilers taped down to decklids that literally break apart or warp the lid when removed. Do it right and you'll have no problems. Do it halfass, have the skirts sagging and looking like shit.
And please make sure the tape says '3M' on it. Anything else is trash.

I agree with drilling but if you do choose to use the tape 3M also makes this amazing stuff called adhesion promoter. We used to use it a Saleen to pull quite a few body parts on in addition to screws. When you use this promoter with the double sided tape the shit won't come off without almost peeling the paint off.

so i can use the shitty white 3m foam tape shown above? :-)
seriously though, 3M makes VHB tape and the one you guys need is dark in color. they sell them at a variety of auto shops specific for exterior mounting.
you want to make sure you clean the panel with solvent first to eliminate any residues. i just installed my sideskirts this weekend and worked like a charm.
ps: be 100% dead-on when installing, because once it sticks.. it STICKS.

bam!
if its good enough for nascar, sheeat.. its good enough for me maing. haha
Wow this is done I didn't drill any holes. I did clean up the rocker panel and applied a lot of 3M adhesive tape. The down side for the entire project I didn't use any zip ties.
