so my gf has been getting really into photography as of late, shes on her 3rd camera in a year and i think its time i drop the coin on her and just get her a badass d-slr. right now she has a real lower end canon one im not sure, but she got it through the canon loyalty program. she sent in one of our first digi cams and added like $295 for a refirbished one from their program. i want to get it for her as a suprize for xmas, but im not sure if i should. should i just let her pick it, or can one of you help decide? i saw the black friday best buy add for the Nikon D40. Also Canon EOS Rebel. Im pretty clueless on this, can somone school me so i make a good purchase?

d40 sucks.
you should be more worried about buying quality lenses rather than bodies

ok, so i found out what she has is a Canon EOS 350D
im looking at reviews and accessory packages right now. what do you guys think of that camera?

Im almost leaning towards just getting her some accessories. Just from what I remember her mentioning and from what ive seen her looking at online some stuff id be looking to get her would be:

lens filters
tripod
extra battery
larger memory card
forget what its called, the cord with the button to take pics?

Lens? im not sure with what to get either, a wide lens? the one her camera came with is a 17-85. anyone know a good site to look at accessories?
thanks for all the input!

B&M is a good place for buying photography stuff thats where my studio buys almost everything from. The new camera to get is the new 5d with the camcorder feature shits crazy. ALso a little expensive for entry level photography

350D is a rebel

i would go 30D minimum for hardcore photography
everything 30D and better has better shutter release, better sensors, and uses the same battery grip (except 1D, which has it built in)

for lenses, L's are the best, and big apertures are your friend.
lenses with a diverse focal range tend to have more glass in them, and image quality suffers. that's why pros have so many lenses, including primes, which have the best image quality.
a basic set of lenses would be something like 24-70mm or 24-105mm, 70-200mm, and 50mm prime.
