I don't think I ever posted anything here about my build that I completed in August.

I bought the car last January....ripped it apart...and built it from the ground up. EVERYTHING on the car was done by me. And I mean EVERYTHING. I painted it, did all the fab work, all the mechanical, even tuned it. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.

This is what it looked like the day I bought it.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/frontleftside1.jpg

Drove it 900miles from Philadelphia to Western Michigan without a single hickup. Then it went into work with me. I worked at AllSpeed Performance in Muskegon MI.

On my lift waiting the tear down...

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/silvia3.jpg

Interior gutted for roll bar

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/silvia1.jpg

Picked up a Silvia front from EliteJDM

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/4.jpg

The beginning of my Defi collection :)

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/silvia2.jpg

Rollbar allmost finished. I waited untill the seat was mounted to figure out how I wanted the harness bar

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/cage1.jpg

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/cage3.jpg

I cut out the stupid hump on the drivers side floor board. I'm 6'1 and it was a crunch for me in a racing seat and I really wanted more head room for when I was in the car with a helmet on. The main hoop of the roll bar really took up alot of space.

Before

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/floor_before.jpg

All material removed

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/floorpan_1.jpg

New floorboard welded in place

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/floorpan_2.jpg

Next up was doing the body work on the front end. It wasn't too bad but having never done bodywork, I had to learn on this car :)

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/silvia_1-1.jpg

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/silvia_2.jpg

I painted the engine bay first. I was pretty scared that I'd have major problems with dirt and grease so I did it seperatly than the rest of the car. I actually had no problems at all. It came out beautifull..

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/PearlBay_1.jpg

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/PearlBay_3.jpg

Rest of the car in primer. After MANY MANY hours of painfull bodywork.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/Primer_1.jpg

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/primer_2.jpg

The end result...

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/69984169.jpg

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/a19413e2.jpg

I also picked up a set of used Gramlights. This is what they looked like on when I got them...

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/volk1.jpg

But I had a ton of extra paint so pearl white gramlights sounded sooooooo gangsta :)

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/7df56b59.jpg

Looks MUCH better :)

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/9a7437f3.jpg

Now for the engine... I dont have too many pics of the internal work. I did all the headwork late one night and I was the only one at the shop and since I'm an idiot....I forgot to take pics. But....on with the goodies...

Engine in...I did this ALONE! NEVER try to drop in an SR by yourself! It sucked big time :) But it got in there and I quickly started bolting everything in..

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/db608951.jpg

Installed the oil cooler set-up as well. Tomei oil block adapter, remote mount oil filter pedistal, Setrap oil cooler, and earls pro-lite -10an lines...

The first start-up.

New Seat installed...

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c37/turbotagteam/newseat.jpg

Siebon carbon fiber hood installed. I DA'd off the crappy clear coat it comes with and sprayed 6 coats of good clear with a little bit of pearl in it as well.

Definitely +1 for you man. Only question I got is why didn't you do A Pillar bars as part of the cage?

LongGrain
11-16-2008, 01:55 AM
so you custom fabbed the part that your oil filter screws onto? damn

i was just going to ask you what you used for that because i'm building a custom oil cooler setup and i plan on using the tomei block as well.

congrats on the build. Great attention to detail (especially by taking the time to take off ALL the moldings during paint prep. I hate seeing painted window molding.)

As far as the body work, it seems pretty good. When you get a chance though, reinstall the bumper support, or make a support so the bumper doesn't sag. Yes, I realize with the front mount, you need to cut out about 80% of that sucker, but at this point its not about absorbing energy during a front end collision.

I love the simplicity and cleanliness of this car. Its highly modded yet almost looks factory. Nice work

Not a fan of same colored wheels. No contrast at all, looks funny.
Also, with everything out of the car, why didn't you stitch weld the bay/interior?

240lookis
11-16-2008, 11:57 AM
do you plan on staying with dual projectors and ugly grill?
the same color wheels do look interesting, but i think it can work.
done with criticizing. your car is awesome

Very nice and simple, I plan on doing something very similar to my hatch, AND I FUCKEN LOVE THE ROLL BAR. But I got to ask though how were you on time: how long did it take.

OH yhea fuck the fags that were talking shit with there criticism, like to see them do anything near of a project you did, and not fuck it up. -to each his own.

All that effort on the engine, and you put the OE shitass oil pressure switch back on. -1. It will leak and make a mess out of the nice underhood paint. Otherwise it's an A+.

Huh, car has over 5000miles on it since I finished the build. Not one drop of oil has leaked from it.

I do plan on getting a GTR style grill. I just havent had the time to find one yet.

I stitched certain portions of the frame rails and the joints under the fenders. I didnt want it to look like a hack job with tacks everyewere. Plus, at the time, I was building a S14 race car so I had that for my heavy duty track slut. This car was meant for more of a Silvia version of a Porsche GT3RS....Drive it to the track...beat the crap out of it...drive home in relative comfort.

I didnt do A-pillar portions of the cage because the car is street driven. If it was a race car and I was allways going to be wearing a helmet while in the car...It'd be a full cage for sure. But since I didnt feel like smacking my head into a 1 5/8in cromoly bar...I didnt do A pillar bars.

The rollbar took me about 3 solid days. About a day was spent on making the anchor plates. A day bending the main hoop and notching out the rest of the bars. And another day TIG welding everything. I had to learn how to use a finger trigger. I am a welder but I had never used a finger trigger.

The pedistal for the oil filter is actually from a Small Black Chevy!!!! They use the same oil filter sizes!!! I'll see if I can find the part number. I searched forever for one for an SR and they all sucked or were missing vital information. I actually started miling my own on our CNC mill but I just happened to have an old SBC pedistal sitting around and it fit!!! So I ordered a new billet one from summit.

It will. There's no need to run it with a true gauge in place anyway. Please do a search if you're doubting it.
