You can't get it legalized. They're simply not legal. You can still get it smogged at "lenient" smog places, but don't ask about them on this forum.

A. Sell it
B. Buy a KA and swap it back.
C. Keep it registered in WA

Sr's are NOT legal.

nope... In other news I saw a sweet ass Datsun wagon this weekend with a (historical vehicle) license plate on it. Shit sounded so bad ass when he drove off... Probably carbed or ITBS

how hard do you think it would be to keep it a WA registered car and keep my WA drivers license but live in cali?

Not hard at all. That's definitely the right way to go, until you get pulled over and they ask why you still have a WA license after you've been here for 6 months.

i dont know about that but i know people who keep their cars and licenses out of state. so it most be possible. i really dont know but there is no way to legalize your SR.

They can't prove it, but that doesn't matter - out of state licenses get stricter enforcement, and if you get tickets with out of state licenses twice or three times, they'll throw the book at you.

So keep it registered up there, keep your WA license, and try to stay low profile :)

bump. Good info here.

I'm currently in Virginia and I want to go back to California. Needless to say, my Z is heavily modified and will probably have a built engine before I return home (to CA). My biggest concern is the smog check. What have others with turbo'd cars been doing in terms of emissions test? I don't daily my car and I want to keep my Cali plates but should I just register my Z in Virginia?

Cannot legalize. as far as keeping your WA license and registration. My friend moved from Arizona. after they pulled him over 2 times they gave him a ticket requesting him to change his plates and license location. unless he proved that he wasnt living here or had a job here and was solely here for vacation. but after two tickets 6 months apart that was getting old soon.

good luck.

Having a built engine does not immediately make your car illegal... I work with plenty of Corvettes with built and supercharged LSx's that still pass smog lol.

Smog checks involve a visual check to make sure you have all the emissions equipment installed (and they check for OEM vacuum routing/etc). Any aftermarket stuff must have CARB EO numbers. Next they check codes - can't pass if you have a check engine light or any important DTC's in the ECU. Finally you go on the rollers to test tailpipe emissions, this is the easiest part to pass if you know what you're doing (a good tune and some cats will pass the sniffer).

That being said, if you're military I'd keep the VA plates for as long as possible.

your best bet is to keep non-cali plates/drivers license.
if you still have an out of state address (parents house, po box, etc) where you can have your registration sent to it makes it much easier.

i've known tons of college kids who were in cali for a full 4 years at school with out of state plates.

Thanks y'all for the info.
The visual checks sound more like they're simply looking for CATs, etc. Unfortunately, my PowerLab kit comes with cross-over pipes which eliminates the stock CATs. It's almost impossible to revert to stock and still be able to drive the Z.

Yeah, I am in the military with Cali plates/DL. The cops usually ask to see my mil ID and that they don’t bugg. Ironically, I bought and modd'd my Z in Virginia and purposely mail ordered Cali registration.

I emailed my tuner earlier today so hopefully we can come up with something. My ECU is flashed with an Osiris (from UPRev) tune so hopefully I can have a MAP option to help me pass emissions.

I understand. Worst case scenario, I’ll get Virginia plates and DL which is possible cuz I‘m in the mil. I’m originally from Cali and I registered my Virginian 350z with Cali…. I suppose it best to always have out of state plates no matter where you drive, lol.

QUOTE]Not true--my car passed every time until 2009 when they changed the limits for CO and NOx. I went to the state ref twice and they couldn't get my car to pass on the dyno tailpipe test. The emission limits are half of what they used to be.
