im looking into a short shifter but wanted something that'll shorten the height as well. the only thing i can find is to cut the shifter itself. lol dont really wanna do that.
what shifters do you guys use and how are they?

well a short shift really shortens the throw of ur shifts like say u shift to 1st its like 3cms to travel there when u install a short shifter it will reduce that then when u shift to 1st its maybe 1.5inches of travel to get there. ( faster and better response ) thats just an example. i dunno if u understood that hahah some people think if u just cut the original shifter it becomes a "short shifter" but its how it works what makes it a short shifter not by looks

There's some shift knobs out there that are more hollow and have plastic pieces that slide in allowing for adjustable heights depending on which piece you placed in it..
I know some Razo shift knobs have it.
there r sum people that cut a section out to shorten it

I personally don't see any benefit to a shorter heighth shifter. I would actually like a taller one so that it is closer to the steering wheel.

my thoughts exactly
my friend cut his shifter and that ish feels ghetto
all you can see out of the shift boot is a small knob
weaksauce if you ask me, but hey do what ever floats your boat.
soo yea you would need to cut an weld the shifter. if you go that route i would get a short throw shifter then shorten it

Im using an HKS shift knob for an evo 8/9. It sits slightly shorter. You could use that as an alternative with a short shifter.

i know people cut the oem shifter and make a new thread to make it shorter... dont find any reason WHY to do this since 240sx shifters are low in my opinion, a little lower and they look like little nipples sticking out of the center console... JAJAJA
did the nismo shifter shorten it a bit also? i mean besides make the throw shorter i mean the actual height of the shifter...
just giving you something to search around here maybe youll find the answer...

The nismo shifters are not actually short shifters, they are just solid shifters. The stock ones have a rubber bushing inside them.

Hmmm that sounds cool.
Wonder how one of those would do with a cusco bushing like this

I've experimented with various shifter heights. The thing is that the taller the shifter is, the longer the distance the shift knob has to travel. Just for the lulz I cut one shifter down so low that the shift knob was level with the ash tray. It was really hard to shift. Basically what I have now is cut down about 2" lower than normal, and the shift knob uses set screws to hold itself on there. It's just perfect for me.

i try to explain that to everyone the solid shifter and short shifter difference... but i think the nismo shortened it by 20% or something small like that also? no? maybe im confusing another shifter...
sorry if im mistaken i guess im learning here also hahaha...

I have one of those in conjunction with my B&M Short Throw Shifter except it's made of Delrin. It takes out all of the slop in gear. You can move it only about 1mm in gear. It makes for no play which is sexy because when I installed my B&M, I was disappointed because it wasn't as tight as I thought it would be. IMHO, it felt stock with a shorter throw. This collar makes it tight like prom night
If you have a stock shifter, you would need the shifter collar and the circled part in my picture to remove all play. The stock one is made of some paper thin metal while this one is 45mm ID, 50mm OD, 2mm thick Delrin.

depends on how good the weld really is.
IMO that is a really stupid way to do it. Just cut the top off and get a shift knob with set screws. Seriously.

The nismo shifter does not come with a spacer. If you don't space the pivot point up an lengthen the motion arm you are not shortening anything. Maybe the shifter itself is a bit shorter, which would also yeild a shorter throw, but that isn't really a short shifter.

i used to own a nismo solid shifter... it used a c's style mount to space it up slightly, maybe 5mm or so...
it was for SURE authentic... and to think i GAVE it to a friend... and he SOLD it right away... what a fucker.

The nismo shifters that I have seen have no spacers, just the shift lever itself. I'll look into that, maybe I am mistaken or the pics that I have seen are incomplete.
Here it is, NO spacer just the lever.

Just as I thought, not a short shifter. It isn't even advertised as a short shifter by nismo, it is advertised as a solid shifter.
