We all know that cars is the meaning of Depreciated Value, but sometimes you end up spending (or wasting) lots of more money than you should've. Whats the most money you've ever lost in one car? Did you at least get to "enjoy" that loss by driving, racing the car for a couple of years?

$50k into a dedicated track car- saw about 2 seasons of driving before I parted it out and made back about $15k... So $35k loss. More including tires/maintenance/shit breaking. Sucks. You will never make your money back if you invest into old ass non-collectible cars.

I spent around 12k in parts and the shell, building a civic for track use.
First track event I did in Streets of Willow, I blew the motor by mis-shifting. The cars been sitting in my driveway for the past 2-3 yrs since.

Also have a 89 crx si I got some 9 yrs ago for 1,600. spent close to 5k in parts in repairs throughout the years, but I will say it has served me well. even did a few autoxs with it.

the s14 I have right now got out of hand quick. suffice to say, I've finally learned my lesson.

agreed the STi is fun. It's a fabulous car. I had a '06 and was super happy with it. I was also surprised how comfortable the suspension with. It's so well balanced from the factory, I never felt the need to throw in parts. Well, maybe more supportive seats, but really I felt it was a very quick, reliable, and consistent car on the track, and a very comfortable daily driver. I've never understood why ppl feel the need to put so much $ in mods for the STi, unless for competitive racing and/or car shows.

Over $17k invested in my 1990 S13 Widebody Drift Project that was stolen from the body shop it was at. Insurance decided that it was only worth $600.

Good bye:

Takata 5 point harnesses
JDM DRFT whide body kit
RB25DET
2 Bride ZETA III with Bride Rails
6 point roll cage
Motegi Touge with BF Tires
Greddy FMIC and Piping
T25 Turbo
sheet metal door panels
lexan glass all around
Snow Performance cooling unit
fire suppression system
KAAZ LSD
Z32 hubs and rear axel
the list goes on...

If there is a next time for me with a build, I will have it appraised by a better insurance company and insure the hell out of it. Lesson learned.

My car has holes in the floor because I took out the rubber plugs for weight reduction to go faster, and one time while I was driving a quarter fell out of my packet and through one of the holes, along with my favorite pen. :(

LOL not exactly a down payment on a house, not in LA for anything decent at least. Still hurts the home team when you actually sit down and add that kind of shit up.

I've never lost much of anything.

I guess when I bought my 2004 WRX new and then sold it 10 months later, I was out the down payment, or $1500. Otherwise I sold it for what I owed on it.

I come out ahead on most of my cars.

I like to buy fully-depreciated used cars, then I buy mostly used parts, and I always part back to stock when I'm done, so I tend to get full value I paid for everything.

I also tend to only buy cars when I can get them for way way less than they're worth. My last DD, a 90 Mariner Blue NA6 with a hardtop, I scored for only $1200. When I sold it, I got $2100 for the car and $650 for the top. I basically got paid to own that car for 4 months....

I love cars, but not enough to lose any serious amount of money on the hobby. I seem to be able to enjoy it while breaking even or better, so I try to avoid sinking unrecoverable money into projects.

My exception is the Ruckus, just because it's stupid cheap. I'm modifying that pretty extensively and I'll never get a dime back out of it, but that's fine. It's my only vice, lol.

i once spent 2500 or so building a SICK CA18DET, then i brought it to the machine shop for final cleaning and assembly, meanwhile i lost interest and never went back to finish the work and claim it.

bought my first s13 for 700, did a tune up, threw on a really expensive muffler for fun, then filled it up with gas one morning 2 months later and then totalled the car on black ice.

ive got about 10-12k into my current s13 that i am sure i will not see a penny back.

whatever, its just part of the game.

my dad is insane about resale price though, REFUSES to ever sell our civic becuase he has crashed it and blown the motor up SO many times and spent to many thousands of dollars fixing it that he considers it a huge loss to get rid of it..

the car is a PILE. but whatever i dont have to drive it.

You realize that 35k is 10% of $350,000 right?? I dont know about you but there are some pretty nice houses that go for 350k and 10% is more than enough for a good down payment.... well regardless, that sucks that you lost that much, I really hope its given back to you in life in some kind of way
