For those of you who had to do it, did you remove the whole pan by dropping the subframe or whatever method, or is there enough room to apply gasket maker just by separating it from the block?

well your gonna wanna remove the whole pan if you plan on doing it right. You should clean both surfaces of any old gasket before applying new gasket and that will require taking the pan completely out

you will either need to remove the crossmember or lift the engine slightly

The FSM says to use a hoist to hold the motor up and then remove the cross member.
When I did mine my motor was already on a engine stand, which was really easy.

Stick a jackstand under the bellhousing, then drop the crossmember.

man, it's really hard to get to some of the bolts. the one bolt on the oil pick up is a bitch to get off.
i just loosened the tranny and engine bolts and lifted it from the bellhousing. got all the bolts off but haven't tried peeling it off yet. i hope it clears the crossmember.
now i read in on of the threads that you have to take out some tranny bolt and put it on the oil pan to take it off? does that sound familiar to anyone?

yes theres two holes that are threaded for the smaller trans bolts in the rear of the pan, you just thread the bolts in and the pan pops right off.

Everyone I know who has used em has had to change em out for rtv within a few weeks due to them leaking like mofos.

so you get the bolts from the trans and thread it into the two holes in the pan? will i be threading it in vertically or horizontally?

vertically - just look for the two holes that are threaded in the rear (bottom) of the pan. there are only two.

You use both if using a gasket. The RTV seals the gasket to the parts, just as straight RTV does. I've done both methods, either works if you apply the RTV right.

i just did this the other day by dropping the crossmember and supporting the engine with jackstands. Took me alot longer than expected but no more leaks. And i just used RTV. working great so far.

what a pain. which part of the engine did you support with jackstands? there are six bolts to remove the crossmember? i tried to get away with just lowering it, but looks like i'm gonna have to take it off. no clearance.
side question - can you replace the front main seal without removing the upper pan?

front main seal is easily accessible once the main crank pulley is off. that's all

Did you read my post above? Guess not. Stick one stand under the bellhousing. Done. There are four bolts on the crossmember but you have to remove the LCAs and rack also.
