View Full Version : ARP Rod Bolts on Stock Rods Question

I've got a set of ARP rod bolts that I need installed in a set of stock rods.
I've called several machine shops about having the stock ones pressed out and new ones pressed in.
Every place I've talked to wants to resize my rods also.
They are telling me that the rods will distort in the process of removing the old ones and replace them with new ones.

Is that really neccessary on a perfect set of OEM rods?

Thanks

Dont listen to the machine shops, they will be fine, just throw it together. oh dont bother to measure your bearing clearances or use a torque wrench either, the fsm dont got shit on you.

My guess is the machine shops know what their talking about haha. Anyways one of the main reasons i went with aftermarket rods for my build is they can handle more power, already have arp bolts, and the price you spend on arp studs + machine work to make them fit your stock rods is almost as much as the aftermarket ones cost with them already installed.

I just finished installing the ARP bolts on a rod. I was able to get the stock ones out with a hard PLASTIC hammer while holing them in my hand. I then torqued them down to 45 ftlbs. Next I used my bore gage to see if they would indeed be out of round or missaligned. The tolerance I measured on the diameter was plus or minus .00025" no matter where I measured. They were still perfectly round. So in conclusion it isn't absolutly necessary in all cases. I can take some pictures of the tools I used and the process if anyone is interested.

yeah sorry i guess its good info for anyone looking to do this in the future, but doing it successfully on one doesnt mean it will be perfect every time, i would still yield to machine shop's advice, especially since multiple places said the same thing.

I built a VG30DETT about two years ago and installed ARP Rod bolts in the oem (and used) rods. I did it myself with a mallett and the car runs smooth and strong to date

i kinda like building a motor once, i have no problem letting the machine shop make sure my shit goes together perfectly. i think that's well worth the money

what the machine shop said is true. it can distort the rod. often times brand new in the box bc , eagle, spool, etc rods need to be machined. when they send you the rods they usually even recommend checking and even machining them.

in case others who may not be as mechanically savvy stumble upon this thread.

if you use arp main studs you need to line bore your block, and yes you might need to file your piston rings. if you don't know what filing piston rings means, then you shouldn't be building your motor :D
