View Full Version : size of a certain nut
http://www.driftopia.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/differentialwelding3.jpg
I need to remove this nut to remove the pinion, I don't have a socket that large in my tool set, any idea on the size of this nut? about to run down to sears but I don't want to pick-up the wrong size..
the differential is from an s13, if that matters
edit: not the red arrows the center nut where the driveshaft connects

Man I'm telling you.
Take the diff to Sears like you and I are talking about right now.
Plop that bitch on the check out counter, and be like "I need a socket that will fit this nut right here".
Then as the guy's leading you to the socket section, tell the other guy behind the counter "hey, don't let anyone steal this", and as you're walking away, keep turning your head to check on the diff.
That would be SO AWESOME!!

Get this and never have to worry about that again.
Craftsman 9 pc. Metric Easy to Read Socket Accessory Set, 12 pt. Standard, 3/8 in. Drive - Model 34566 at Sears.com (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00934566000P)
But seriously, just assume is the next size up and you're set.

Make sure when you plop it down on the counter a whole mess of shit and rust fall off of it.
But if they touch it at all check to see if its damaged where they handle it and be sure to brush those psots off
haha

Usually on big chassis bolts, its either a 19 or 21 mm bolt. If its not a 19mm then its most likely a 21mm.

is this off the top of your head? or did you just check

Do what i do, Take a wrench like this and tighten it on the bolt/nut. Take it off and put it to a ruler. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t197/n240sxfnatic/KS3492.jpg

Note your pinion preload before you take it apart so install will be a breeze.

it's the same size as the front wheel hub nut. 30MM
i didn't know either, i just got lucky. i was working on my front conversion and rear diff recently, whaddya know, it just fit lol
go rent the 30MM from autozone. if it doesn't fit bring it back and get your money back.
its 27/ end thread.
it was in fact, 27mm
but I ran myself into another problem... loosening the thing
Nissan has this special tool...

Impact, 1/2 inch socket, 5 seconds, done.
Impacts make life so much easier.
Just don't use it to tighten it back on.
Haha.

Haha.
I don't own an impact either
I tried jamming a piece of metal between one of the holes and catching it on the diff cover to keep it from moving, which ended up bending the piece of metal and doing nothing to the nut.
working on cars is annoying..

seriously, if you're working on a car you need an impact gun.

I plan on getting one, eventually but my money ends up going to other things.. like a new differential
one day though..
any ideas on going about removing the nut? I've tried several different ways, with no luck.
think a Nissan dealership would have one on hand?

Agreed. that or jam am heavy metal bar between the studs and have it long enogh so it catches on the floor.

I used two screwdrivers on the corners and they catch the differential mounting points... I think my best bet is a tool like they have
I still need to pickup a pinion seal at the Nissan dealership, so I'll see if they still have the tool available.

Looks like you have enough clearance to just use the adjustable wrench. It's pretty reliable for the bigger bolts!

It was 27mm socket, I have it.. that's done
I'm stuck on another now :P

That tool shouldn't be much. I know the stealerships try to rip you off, but when the guy tells you the price, tell him a different dealership told you a lower price hahaha. Did that with my friends flywheel bolts got them 50% of the price they told us. I would just go get that stupid tool, pay the little extra and get that shit out for some relief. After that, consider buying an impact gun or share one with your friends.
