well im looking for a new laptop, i know i know, there has been threads discussed on this topic before, but im particularly looking at the ASUS EEEPC.
there are a few different models such as the 701 and the 1000.
i was leaning towards the 1000 for only about $430 @ Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220443)
on Ebay, the 701 model is only going for less than 300 bucks. that has alot of modifications i could do, but i dont think i'd feel safe doing it on my own.
now those are just two laptops i was thinking of, id like to hear more.
i'll be using the laptop for minor applications, nothing big. browsing, school work. i'd like to have a huge harddrive, portable, with a ok battery life.
i think my limit is about 700-800 bucks. any thoughts on any other laptops?

In order to easily narrow down your choices, and tell you your best option within your price range.
We wound need to know:
1. What are you using your laptop for?
2. How long do you plan to keep it before upgrading again?
3. Are you prone to breaking things?
4. What computer are you using right now.
5. Why you want to get the eepc.
Thanks

- well like i said, its mainly for school use browsing around.
- i'm not a big gamer. BUT i'd like to have a computer that can run som (Starcraft 2)
- i plan on keeping it for a while. maybe about 5 years or so.
- i will be downgrading to XP windows i believe. i dont need that extra shit.
- i am not prone to breaking things. i run virus/ad/ scans everyday, and take care of my things
- i've been using a Dell d600. old school but it works. i just think its too huge to be lugging around.
- the eeepc because my friend has it and says he loves it. i dont mind the screen size and all that, but i was also thinking if i buy that, ill rebuild my desktop sitting in my closet so i can use that at home or so
im game for any laptop really, i just want it to be fast, not huge, good amount size hd, and reliable.

wow, an OP in a laptop thread leaning towards an eee pc! nice!
if you haven't used one, go to Best Buy. they have the 1000HD on display. don't buy it, though. it has a shitty celeron.
once you've been thoroughly wow'd by the display model, go home and buy a 1000H, with the 1.6ghz Atom chip, for $430ish. or, for $480ish, get the same model with bluetooth.
in fact, yes, newegg now sells the 1000H w/ bluetooth for 480. done deal, i'm getting one asap

Nowadays you need a pretty powerful computer that can handle heavy duty jobs. Trust me, if you're going to use it for school I highly doubt that you'll be running just one application at a time. If you're like the rest of the world that multitasks and runs 5 programs at the same time, then you'll want this:
http://c1.neweggimages.com/NeweggImage/productimage/34-115-488-19.jpg
Newegg.com - Acer Aspire AS5920-6750 NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T7500(2.20GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 4GB Memory DDR2 667 320GB HDD DVD Super Multi Intel GMA X3100 - Laptops / Notebooks (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115488)
- Has about 5" on the ASUS that you wanted to buy.
- 4GB of ram, which is a little overkill, but hey.. the more the better.
- Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.20GHz
- 320GB hard drive ... HUGEE
- and theres more, just check out the link.
I'm about to purchase a laptop for college, too. I would definitely recommend this laptop because it'll pretty much chew through anything you throw at it.
The only problem I see with it is that it doesn't have a dedicated video card. Graphics performance will suffer because of this, but since the computer is pretty much beefed up with the Core 2 Duo and the 4GB of memory, you shouldn't have a problem.
Good luck!

15.4" is great, if that's your only computer.
i don't get people who only own one computer, and it's a laptop. that's like only owning one vehicle, and it's a scooter.

i just picked up a gateway from bestbuy last months its pretty sweet 250gb HD, 4Gb of ram, core due, video card, and it has a 64bit processor for $525 battery life kinda sucks tho but its a pretty big laptop with alot of stuff
id probabley with up an eee tho if i could i could do it all over again the gateway was kinda of an impulse buy

it doesnt matter how fast your processor and ram is, you're not playing any new games without a nice video card. it just doesnt happen anymore. no shader model 3 support = no playing new games.

^^ Exactly, you mentioned starcraft 2, if you want to play it you can not use most of intel's integrated graphics as they don't support hardware T&L, there are a handfull that do though. The game also requires shader model 2.0, which means you need an nvida fx series or ati 9500 equivalent or better.
